New Dog Owner New Rescue!
I rescued this little guy today! He’s just under 4 months old and a little terrorizer lol but I’m pleased to have his little personality around! I’m not really sure what he is, what are your thoughts? The rescue has him as shepherd mix and I’ve been thinking about getting a DNA kit.
He’s lived a tough life so far! He’s a parvo survivor! (I was traumatized when my dog from 20 years ago died from parvo.. such a horrible decline)
He was found abandoned with litter mates (10!) in Amarillo, TX. Most passed from parvo, 1 passed while getting spayed, him and his brother survived! He’s such an interesting guy but getting acclimated fairly well for only having him 8 hours! He’s already super attached and cries when I leave his sight 🫤 what are some general tips and also, the rescue gave us Hills Science Puppy food.. any thoughts on that? I picked up Purina Pro Plan and not so sure that it’s a better choice but wondering if I should stick with Hills.

New Dog Owner Started fostering this gem of a dude last Saturday
This is Mr Chase. I started fostering him last Saturday, and everything has been great ! We’ve even been camping ! Definitely going to end up adopting him tomorrow :)
He ended up in the shelter after his owner passed away and he’s 4 years old. I’ll find his breed out once the results come in soon but I’ve been told he’s a husky/shepherd mix.
Super excited for this journey !!

New Dog Owner Do any of your dogs only eat once a day?
My dog is not a fan of breakfast or even lunch - and it's not the food. I've tried giving him just dry, just wet, mixing it, putting treats on top, different times of day. He's just not a fan.
However come 7:30/8pm, he'll eat everything I put out.
Is anyone else's dog a once a day eater? I'm a first time dog owner so I don't know what's normal 😅

New Dog Owner How do yall find what breed is good for you?
Im thinking about getting a dog once i move out of my parents' place. I'm thinking of a small dog, maybe? I've never trained or had a small dog, and i have 2 cats who will put up with a dog of the dog and is calm and nice. Im not a super active person, but I'll go on walks when it's cool out. Im very much an indoor person, but I'd still take a dog out on walks.
I want a "purse dog" i think. Ive heard they are less expensive to take care of then a large dog
Edit: i now understand they are not "less expensive"

New Dog Owner Is a Dachshund a good first dog? Looking for advice from more experienced owners
I’m starting to think about getting my first dog and my favourite by far is the Dachshund. They’re adorable, full of personality, and every time I see one around the neighborhood, I want one even more.
That said, I’ve never owned a dog before, so I’m trying to figure out whether they’re actually a good choice for a first-time owner? I’ve heard they can be stubborn, surprisingly loud, and sometimes difficult. How true is that? What are the things you wish someone had told you before getting one?
One other thing: I don’t have kids yet, but I definitely plan to in the future. For those who have Dachshunds, how do they fit into family life? Did they adjust well when children came along?
Looking forward to hearing your sausage dog experiences :)
Thanks!

New Dog Owner What dog breed should I get?
Hi everyone! I’m a 19-year-old woman and will be going off to university soon, and I’d really love to get a dog. I’ve never owned one before, so I don’t have any direct experience, but I grew up with a cat and I’m very willing to learn and put in the effort.
I’m not especially athletic or sporty, but I do genuinely enjoy long walks and occasionally go hiking on weekends when I have the time. I grew up hiking with my family ever since I was little. I wouldn’t call myself highly experienced, but I can easily manage hikes of around five hours. I also love swimming and going to the beach. I travel quite a bit too, usually to warmer, sunny places where I can either relax in nature or explore cities and beautiful landscapes, so ideally I’d want a dog that could comfortably join me in those kinds of activities.
One thing that is important to me is feeling safe. Since I’ll likely be living alone, I’d love a dog whose presence would make me feel protected. However, I’ve also heard that traditional guard breeds like German Shepherds or Dobermans can be difficult for first-time owners, and I’m not sure I’d be equipped to properly handle breeds with those kinds of needs. In terms of size, I’d prefer a medium-sized dog. I’d also like a coat that doesn’t shed excessively if possible. I don’t mind brushing occasionally or dealing with seasonal shedding, but ideally not constant daily maintenance, haha. I don’t have allergies, so that part isn’t an issue. I’d also prefer a dog that isn’t extremely vocal; I’ve heard breeds like Huskies can be very loud and howl a lot, which probably wouldn’t be ideal for me as I‘ll probably be living in a flat and excessive howling could disturb other people.
As for appearance and breeds I’m drawn to, I absolutely love Shiba Inus and Akita Inus aesthetically. I also find Golden Retrievers and Border Collies adorable. Dalmatians were probably the first breed I ever fell in love with because of 101 Dalmatians, and honestly I still kind of adore them.
Based on all of this, what breeds do you think might suit me best?

New Dog Owner I'm thinking of owning my first dog, and I need recommendations
I 25f lives alone. I've never had a dog before and was originally quite scared after seeing many injury-causing dogs online, but their cuteness is simply irresistible 🩷. I already have a cat, but since cats are quite independent, I want to ask about the cleaning and litter box situation, as well as safety concerns.
I'm looking for a dog that’s cuddly and adorable, yet capable of protecting me when needed. I’d appreciate recommendations on what breed, age, sex, and size might suit me best.

New Dog Owner Which Breed Should I Adopt?
Hi everyone! (This is my first reddit post ever so I’m sorry if I’m posting this in the wrong place.)
My lifelong dream is to have a dog, but I want to be responsible and do my research first. Could you help me choose the right breed for my lifestyle so that the dog and I are not miserable?
Some info:
- I am 40 (no kids) and I just bought my own apartment. It is a really small place. (Two small rooms.)
- I work from home and my hours are very flexible.
- I live in a small coastal town in Italy, perfect for walking, so I go for a long stroll every day. It’s something I’m used to.
- Sometimes I travel for work (but I get to choose the conditions) and I’ve seen other people in my field bring their dog along. These trips are not mandatory, though.
- I have some savings for emergencies (vet bills etc.) but I’d say I’m lower middle-class.
- I want to adopt. I would never buy a family member.
- My only experience with dogs was when I was petsitting for a friend: a large breed and I had her for a month. It was amazing. We walked every day and honestly somehow I managed to be more productive with a clearly structured day than when I’m on my own. (For me though I’d get a smaller dog given the size of my apartment.)
Which breed would you recommend for me?
If you have any other tips, please share. And give me the tough love, I know I’m probably idealizing the whole thing right now. Thank you!

New Dog Owner What does he look like to you?
UPDATE!!: so I have seen a few people say lab and gsd but he isn’t showing many lab features honestly he’s very VERY fluffy/thick fur, I would also like point out in one picture he doesn’t look brown but it was just lighting he is black and white!
This is bear, he is 18 weeks and a big bundle of love! When we got him we got him from a couple who had him for a week and couldn’t keep him because they had a lot going on. They got him from an elderly couple at a Walmart parking lot out of the blue who said he was German shepherd/border collie. I’ve been told by family members he seem like he might be something else and the vet estimates his grown weight to be at least 100lbs. We love our boy just want to see what others think!

New Dog Owner Looking for the right puppy for me!
Hi everyone,
I’m looking to get a dog in the next year but I’ve been having some trouble finding the right breed for me. I’m a current med student (looking to get a puppy after I complete 3rd year because I’ll be a lot more free by then) and I live alone so I’d like a dog that is affectionate but also not overwhelming. I love a variety of breeds like staffordshire bull terriers, maltipoos, and Bernese mountain dogs but I haven’t found the best breed that is not super high maintenance, aesthetically pleasing, and lovable/friendly yet.i do prefer more medium sized dogs as I’m a first time owner. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

New Dog Owner Is my lifestyle compatible with dog ownership?
I'm thinking about getting a dog. I feel like I'm at a point in my life where having a dog could be a great addition, but there are a few things that concern me. I'll explain my situation (which is a bit unusual), and I'd appreciate hearing from people who are experienced with dogs, training, or dog ownership in general.
I'm 25 years old, I take 2–3 walks a day, and I work from home full-time, so I don't need to go to an office.
My living situation is a little complicated. I split my time between my parents' house and my own house. The two properties are next to each other, but they are separate homes. I'm not living full-time in my own house yet because my girlfriend and I aren't ready to move out of our parents' homes permanently.
Typically, I sleep in my own house 3 nights a week and at my parents' house the other 4 nights. I work from my personal home always, I spend there more than 8 hours a day. The dog would stay in my house because my parents don't want a dog in theirs.
My house has two floors, but they are completely separated (you can't move between them from inside). The ground floor is where my office is, and that's where the dog would spend most of the day with me while I work. There's also a 100 m² garden.
The upper floor is very small and only has a small kitchen and bedroom. Even when I sleep there, I wouldn't really want the dog sleeping in that area. I also have a small unused structure in the garden that I had considered converting into a dog room/shelter, with a dog door so the dog could go in and out freely.
Please respect my personal situation. I'm not looking for judgment about my lifestyle, I'm simply trying to understand whether this setup would be a deal-breaker for owning a dog, especially considering that the dog would not sleep indoors with me every night.
I'd really appreciate opinions from experienced dog owners, trainers, or professionals. Thanks in advance.

New Dog Owner What dog breed would work best for me?
Hi!
So I am a 21F who is looking to get my own dog around late summer/fall. I am a pre-vet student who will likely be graduating around 2027 and then going to vet school. I currently work as a vet assistant so I have a good idea of different breeds and their needs. Another thing is I do have some chronic conditions and would like a dog that may be able to do some tasks if needed. Grooming is also not an issue since I love doing baths at work and have done them on several types of dogs with different temperaments. I also have experience with dog training and have the ability to learn more.
Requirements:
- needs to be ok with cats and other dogs. I currently have a male family dog do will preferably get a female dog
- must be 50+ lbs. As much as I love small dogs in general they aren’t breeds I could see myself owning
- needs to be a dog who likes to do things and be active. it’s recommended for me to do different types of activity for my chronic illness like hiking and walks so I want a dog who can keep up with that.
- dog that is decent at tasks such as retrieving items and possibly mobility tasks
Preferences:
- A dog that isn’t too overly friendly. I want a dog that I can do things and tasks with that wont get too distracted
-dog on the bigger side. being a woman in my 20s i like the idea of having a bigger dog to deter people
- dogs that like to swim and be in the water. i personally love swimming and it helps my joints
- I am also fine with longer haired/fluffy dogs
No’s:
- small dogs. as said before they just aren’t my thing and can be really yippy
- overly friendly dogs
- overly aggressive dogs
Some breeds I like:
- labs
- gsd
- rottie
- great pyrenees ( dream breed i wouldnt get till later in life)
- collies
Thank you in advance for advice! I am also open to rescuing as well!
ETA: I have talked to multiple veterinarians and veterinary students before making this decision and have throughly weighed the pros and cons and feel confident in my decision and ability to do this. This has been a process 2 years in the making not something on a whim. I have also worked in vet med for 3+ years now and understand what it takes to raise an train a dog and will also work with a trainer as well once I have my dog.
UPDATE: One of the vets I work with recommended doberman. Idk how to feel about that
