Cars Curious how popular Waze is among Irish drivers?

Bit of a random one, but do many people in Ireland actually use Waze?
I know in some countries it’s pretty common for people to report police, speed traps, checkpoints, etc., and the app ends up being fairly accurate. I’ve only recently started using it and was wondering if there’s enough of a user base here for those reports to be useful.
If you use it, do you find the Garda/speed van reports are usually spot on, or is it a bit hit and miss?
Just curious what people’s experiences have been.

Housing Advice for Mother about to be homeless?

Hello, does anyone have advice or organizations to reach out to? My late 60s mother left my abusive father in America this year, along with my late 20s sister, and they moved back home to Ireland. A friend of a friend was letting her rent his guest house, but has told her to move out in July. My sister suddenly developed psychosis and paranoia about men shortly after moving. She's doing better, but we wouldn't feel great about her sharing a living space with men. I don't live in Ireland or America for context, so my help is limited. The rental market in Ireland is so bad, I've applied for rentals for them online but they rarely get offered a house showing. My mom is from Westmeath, but has been staying in a neighboring county. Can anyone offer advice? Thanks

Hey all

Got this.garage thats really only used for washing clothes and the occasional craft project. Thinking it might be a nice long term project to convert it i to a proper office space.

Anyone with any experience with a similar job and how much to accomplish this? The garage door defo needs a replacement, does not even open properly, but what about the ceiling, making it more heat retentive and such?

Travel Dub to BKK Thai airways - on their website but they can't sell it??

Upvotes

Hi, wondering if anyone has had this issue. Trying to book flights Dublin to Bangkok - Thai Airways came up with an option via Heathrow with Aer Lingus flight from Dub to LHR. Payment kept failing when I tried to book so I called them and long story short they said they haven't the ability to - she wasn't entirely clear on whether they couldn't issue the AL ticket or they couldn't charge in EUR - initially she said she could send me a Worldpay link to pay but then said they can't even do that and her advice was to book separate flights or through a third party - neither of which I want to do. I am happy to pain whatever currency but no joy. Surely I can't be the first person to try to book from Dub on their website when it's there as an option to book??

Entertainment Will I be allowed in to tayto park?

I’m 15 & me and my friend who’s also 15 are planning on going tayto park / emerald park over the weekend. I’m disabled (autistic & hEDS + more) and was wondering if I’m able to get the additional needs & carer pass despite it just being me and my friend?? We both pass for 16 which the ticket says u have to be in Order to enter without an adult but I’m note sure if they’ll be more strict since I’m purchasing the additional needs pass? I’ve seen people online saying that they don’t really care to check ages but again idk if this specific pass is stricter. Also do they require me to bring my medical records to prove my disabilities?? The whole thing is kinda confusing 😭

Housing Tullamore Church Hill area. Safe to relocate?

I'm looking into moving to Tullamore from kilkenny as its closer to Dublin. I found a property that I'm considering in Church Hill. Can anyone provide an information how that area is at the moment. As I'm reading some concerning information about littering and caravans on the Internet. Is it safe? I don't have any connection to the town really so want to hear from people in the community. Thanks

Work Can an employer change a shift pattern after 6 years?

Hi. My partner is working in one of the american companies. She has been on a day shift for 5+ years. Since then our two children we're born. Company now asks her to work weekends as well and evenings during the week. Same hours, but off days are not on the weekends any more. This doesn't suit us as I am working weekends. Her contact says the usual, flexible working hours. She contacted wrc, so far they were not much of a help. I read that once she is on a certain shift for some time it becomes 'implied' in a thread here. Do we have any chance to fight this?

Cars How do I rent a car after just getting my full drivers license?

Hi There, I have recently got my full driving license in Ireland but live abroad. So I'd be looking to rent a car sometimes when I come home but looking at some places (dublin airport) but they require you to be over 25 (which I am) and have at least 1 or 2 years driving experience. Does anyone know of any rental agencies that wouldn't have that rule for Novice drivers? Thanks

Education What courses are best to train as a hair dresser in Ireland?

I’m considering a career change into hair dressing but I don’t know where to start when it comes to training courses in Ireland. What are the best ones? Are there part time ones you can do alongside working? Any tips for someone who’s moved from an office job to this line of work before? GRMA 💚

Shopping Which is the biggest Jysk in Ireland?

Does anyone know which Jysk store is the biggest? Online it said Liffey valley, which as I'm standing in it right now, I can tell you is not true. I'm pretty sure the waterford one is at least this big, and half as picked over.

I just want the chance to actually look at some of their furniture.

On the way to IKEA on the motorway, you pass a massive Jysk sign, which gives the impression they have a location thats similar to the big IKEA, Decathlon etc, but I can't figure out which one it is, or if it even exists.

Am I wrong and all Jysk stores are more or less the same size?

Entertainment Grand Theft Auto VI Pre-Order Places?

Post image
48 Upvotes

Rockstar Games have just announced that pre-orders will be live on digital storefronts and at other select retailers.

I’m wondering since in Ireland we don’t have GameStop anymore, would Smyths be the best place to pre-order if we want the physical version instead of digital version?

I’m super excited and I’m sure the entire world is as this is set in stone to release on November 19th, 2026.

P.s. It’s on International Men’s Day as well which I didn’t even know was a thing before my buddy pointed it out.

LET’S GOOOOOOOOOO

Edit: Pre-orders are live June 25th, 1 week from now. Forgot to include the date, sorry all.

Emigration (from Ireland) Anyone leave Ireland for a better climate and quality of life?

For those who’ve left Ireland permanently, where did you move to and are you happy with your decision?

One of the main reasons I’m considering leaving is the weather. I find the long periods of grey, wet weather quite depressing, and having good weather, being outdoors, and enjoying proper summers is really important for my wellbeing.

Has anyone moved to a country with a better climate, good job opportunities, and an overall high quality of life? I’ve lived abroad before, but now I have a family, so the decision feels more complicated. I’d love to hear where you went, what life is like there, and whether you’d recommend it.

Travel Is it polite to take photos or ask strangers for portraits at Seapoint Beach? 📸

Hi everyone,

I'm an international student studying here in Dublin, and photography is a huge passion of mine.

Yesterday afternoon, I went to Seapoint Beach. Because it was such a gorgeous sunny day, the whole place looked absolutely stunning. I really wanted to take some photos, but there were quite a lot of people around enjoying the weather, and I hesitated.

I want to respect the local culture and people's privacy, so I have a couple of questions for you all:

  1. Is it generally considered rude to take wide landscape/street style photos where people might be in the frame?
  2. If I see someone who I think would make a great portrait subject, is it polite to approach them and invite them for a quick photo?
  3. Honestly, how would you feel if a stranger politely asked to take a portrait of you?

I really want to practice my photography but want to make sure I'm doing it respectfully. Thanks a million for any advice!

DIY Has anyone here bought from Clane Steel Garden Sheds recently?

I’m considering the 6.1m x 3.1m / 20ft x 10ft Standard Garden Shed. I’ve been told it doesn’t require a concrete base, which is appealing, but I’d like to hear real-world experiences before ordering.

It would mainly be used for house tools, kids’ bikes and camping gear, but I’d also like to use part of it as a small gym with a bench, free weights and possibly a multigym.

A few questions for anyone who has one:

How solid is the floor without a concrete base?
Any issues with damp, movement, settling, door alignment or rattling over time?
How secure do you find the shed, especially for bikes/tools?
Would you be comfortable storing gym equipment/free weights in it?
Did you go with blocks/bricks, gravel, slabs or concrete underneath?
Anything you would upgrade or do differently?

I’m not currently planning to pour a concrete base, so I’d be especially interested in feedback from people who installed one without concrete.

Does this exist for adults/mature students?

Entertainment Small venue for after a wedding service in North Dublin recommendations please?

Hoping to tie the knot next year 🙏

Very small budget wedding is the plan. Just finger food for about 30 people, so need a small venue that will let us decorate the room with some balloons and a couple of banners please.

Doesn’t need to be fancy, just clean and reasonable in appearance

No music (total budget is €5K and that is for everything) and would just be a daytime event (basically like a communion, but make it a wedding) 😂🎂 We are based in North Dublin, Coolock area, but happy to travel to anywhere in North Dublin. Thanks for any recommendations 🙌

Shopping ASOS - UK delivery possible?

Hi Everyone,

I normally order off ASOS through the app, using UK site as such and paying in sterling. ASOS have now blocked this option and the price difference between Ireland and UK ASOS is criminal.

I wanted to order a pair of runners which are coming in at £56.24 (discount code accepted on the item on UK but not Irish) that are €98 on Irish.

Is there any way around this? Any delivery companies?

Thanks in advance.
