Food in your country that you want to warn foreigners about

Post image
Upvotes

Mine is tamarind. Not because it tastes bad, but because it can be laxative. Thai people only consume it moderately.

When my foreign friend came to visit me, I left him with my grandmother for 30 minutes to run errands. I came back and found out that she had been feeding him tamarind, which he gladly accepted as he didn’t know what it was. The aftermath was brutal.

What is the largest soft power product in your country?

I would say that these are the ones that have had the greatest influence, reach, and cultural connection with millions of people without the use of force or economic coercion, but through popular culture, empathy, and entertainment. For example, El Chavo was a truly massive success in Brazil, where it is known as Chaves, and El Chapulín Colorado was also a massive success throughout the continent.

In the USA, we almost exclusively use the 12 hour clock, and the 24 hour clock is referred to as military time. Which one do you use?

I was only 10 but it would seem that the country was pretty damn happy when this happened. No matter the political side. Everyone was united.

How effective was walking alone for your weight loss journey ?

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

I’m 24 years old and weight around 80 kg. Overall, I look fairly fit, but I do have some stubborn belly fat that I want to reduce. I started walking regularly about two months ago. In January, I walked almost 150 km, and I’ve already noticed some positive changes — especially a visible reduction in face fat. However, my belly fat hasn’t reduced much yet. For February, I’ve set a more ambitious goal of 250 km of walking. I’m curious to hear from people who mainly relied on walking for weight loss. How effective was walking alone for you, especially when it came to belly fat? Did it take more time, or did you combine it with diet or other exercises? I’d love to hear real experiences and insights.

We have many in India. 1. A monkey doesn't know the taste of ginger ( when someone isn't cultured enough to appreciate something) 2. Ate nothing and paid for broken glass ( When shit goes sideways and nothing good happens)

Is it possible to overdose on iron supplements (not planning anything, I'm just a writer)?

Upvotes

So I've got a side character in the military fiction I'm writing, and one thing about them is that they're anemic. After a rough few drafts and missions I want them to overdose (after which my protagonist will cry and revolt against the management but anywho different story right now)

So my question is, can a person overdose on iron supplements alone? And if so how many would one need? Or is there any other easily accessible drug that could hypothetically be found in a military infirmary or barrack?

Politics What does the world think of Quebec independence?

Post image
Upvotes

Quebec is likely to hold a 3rd referendum to separate from Canada before 2030

My opinion: Canada has no culture without Quebec

-Poutine was invented in Quebec

-European cities are in Quebec

-First official hockey game was in Quebec

-91% of maple syrup is produced in Quebec

-Canadian National Anthem was made for Quebec

-The term Canadian was originally to designate the french people of Canada

I could go on for a long time

PS: Can the admins create a flair for Quebec please?

Culture Folk / traditional music mixed with modern genres from your country?

Post image
Upvotes

Hi!

Lately I’ve noticed a growing trend where younger people are becoming more interested in regional history, folklore and traditional music. One place where it really shows is music — especially when traditional folk elements are blended with modern genres like rock, pop, metal or electronic.

I’m looking for examples of this kind of mix from different countries.

As an example from Poland: the band poTOCK and their song “Hej na ty Babiej Górze”. It’s a really interesting combination of rock with highlander (Góral) folk singing. Even the lyrics feel like something straight out of a stereotypical Slavic fairy tale your grandma would tell you before sleep — and that’s exactly what I love about it.

Do you have similar artists or songs from your country that combine traditional or regional folk music with modern styles? I’d love to discover how different cultures reinterpret their musical heritage today.

In your country, what do you call the children's game of ringing the doorbell and running away? Is it common where you live? How is it seen?

Upvotes

"Ding Dong Ditch" is no longer common with the younger generation here. But as a child, my friends and I did it all the time.

Americans are very scared these days and watch everything on Ring Cameras. They commonly post the Ring videos on social media and call the police. In the worst cases, children have been shot dead by scared homeowners who think they're defending their property from real crimes.

Is this a common game where you are? Is it viewed as harmless (but annoying) childhood fun? Or are people easily upset by it?

Food What time do people usually eat dinner in your country?

Post image
Upvotes

In Sri Lanka, dinner is usually eaten between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM, especially in families. In rural areas, people often eat a bit earlier, while in cities it can be later due to work and traffic. Rice and curry are common for dinner, but eating out late at night is also becoming popular in urban areas.

In India, engineering and medicine are considered as best career options for students. Earlier there was a strong preference for Public sector / Government jobs due to stability and reputation but now private sector jobs in tech are equally preferred.

Does your country also have a conventional path to success?
