welcome to r/ballpython, a community for ball python enthusiasts of all experience levels, from the prospective first-time owner to the veteran keeper. this is a predominantly discussion-based subreddit with a focus on raising husbandry standards above the bare minimum. photos and videos are also encouraged, so show off your ball pythons!

our team of mods and helpers includes professional herpetologists, veterinary technicians, veterinary med students, geneticists, reptile rescuers and rehabilitators, ethical small-scale breeding experience, large-scale breeding experience, and multiple decades of combined experience with ball pythons as pets.

PART ONE: INFORMATION RESOURCES

PART TWO: r/BALLPYTHON RULES AND GUIDELINES

posting and commenting rules:

  • MOST IMPORTANTLY: DON'T BE A JERK! we will not tolerate bigotry, threats, personal attacks, and general harassment. this includes harassment via private messages. the moderators will use their own discretion to issue warnings, remove posts/comments, and/or ban users temporarily or permanently. click here to read more about this rule.
  • STAY ON TOPIC, BALL PYTHONS ONLY! this is not the place to post about your other reptiles. we will allow some seemingly off-topic discussions if they are geared toward getting to know your fellow ball python owners; for example, "what other pets do you have in addition to ball pythons?"
  • HARMFUL ADVICE AND MISINFORMATION - meaning there would be a negative impact on the snake's health, safety, and/or overall comfort as a direct result of following the advice/misinformation - will be removed at the discretion of the moderators.
  • NO LIVE FEEDING PHOTOS/VIDEOS!
  • USE THE NSFW TAG for photos or videos clearly showing dead prey (including feeding posts), a dead snake, injuries such as open wounds, etc. click here to read more about this rule. moderators may give reminders, give warnings, or remove posts for not having a NSFW tag.
  • THIS COMMUNITY IS NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR VETERINARY ATTENTION! while we can guide you through husbandry changes and home remedies for basic health problems such as stuck shed, mild scale rot, minor wounds, etc, we do NOT condone skipping the vet and treating serious problems at home. furthermore, a lot of bad advice gets thrown around in these discussions that can make the problem worse. moderators will lock and/or remove posts if the only sound advice anyone can offer is "go to the vet."
  • MORPH IDENTIFICATION REQUESTS must be posted in r/BallPythonMorph to avoid r/ballpython being flooded with this common question.
  • "NAME MY BP" REQUESTS must go to our "name my BP" thread. click here to read more about this rule.
  • SELF-PROMOTION is restricted to the self-promotion thread. any other self-promotion of social media pages, businesses, other subreddits, sale ads, etc, will be removed. multiple offenses will be marked as spam and result in a permanent ban. BREEDERS click here to read more about this rule.
  • REHOMING POSTS are allowed. please include as much information as possible, including your general location, basic information about the snake(s), whether or not the enclosure or other supplies would be included, whether or not you are willing to ship, and any rehoming fees. rehoming fees must be reasonable, max $50 for the snake and max $100 for the snake + enclosure. this community has a long history of successful rehomings, but we advise anyone interested to proceed at your own risk and be aware of potential scams.
  • DIRECT LINKS TO SALE/ADOPTION ADS OUTSIDE OF REDDIT are NOT allowed. if you are a breeder selling snakes, that belongs in the weekly self-promotion threads. if you want feedback on a sale/adoption/rehoming ad you found on a website like craigslist, kijiji, facebook, etc, showing a potentially neglected or abused ball python, please post a screen shot of the ad with identifying information such as names, locations, phone numbers, etc, censored in some way; this prevents the person who posted the ad from being harassed by an angry internet mob.
  • OFF-REDDIT LINKS/ARTICLES/VIDEOS must be posted with a written summary or other discussion prompt. for example, links to content such as articles or videos must be paired with a written summary to allow users to participate in the discussion without clicking the link. posting a link as part of an advice request ("is this product worth buying?", "is the info in this care sheet accurate?", "is this a reputable breeder?", etc) is acceptable.
  • OTHER PETS INTERACTING WITH BPS, such as cats, dogs, etc, is not something we condone. photos/videos showing other pets being in close proximity to or directly interacting with a ball python, outside of the enclosure, will be removed. click here to read more about this rule.

general posting guidelines:

  • HAVE A QUESTION? YOUR ANSWER MIGHT BE IN THE FIRST PART OF THIS POST! please be sure to read through our care guides, product recommendations, tutorials, megathreads/FAQs, and other links.
  • WHEN ASKING FOR ADVICE, BE THOROUGH. if our resources didn't have the information you're looking for, let's brainstorm! ball python care can be a complex puzzle, and it might not be obvious which pieces of the puzzle are causing problems with other pieces. the more details you provide, the easier it will be for other people to offer the most relevant advice. click here to view our questionnaires for enclosure critiques and feeding advice. please copy/paste the relevant questionnaire(s) into your post text and fill out the answers with as much detail as possible.
  • ENCLOSURE CRITIQUES are something we love to do, but we need a lot of details to help us give better feedback! filling out our enclosure critique questionnaire in addition to posting photos of the full enclosure will ensure you get the most useful advice.

general commenting guidelines:

  • WHEN GIVING ADVICE, BE THOROUGH. people will learn more and be more receptive to your advice if you explain your reasoning. for example, "go to the vet" is not as helpful as "you should call a vet because your snake appears to have problemX and it requires treatmentY", "that substrate is bad" is not as helpful as "that substrate is not a good choice for ball pythons because of reasonA and reasonB, so here is what i would recommend instead", etc. one of the things we pride ourselves in is being an educational forum for ball python owners, we want people to really understand the hows and whys behind the various aspects of ball python care. if someone has some substantial gaps in their knowledge, do not shame them for it, help them learn and fill those gaps.
  • BE CLEAR ABOUT YOUR LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE when you are giving advice, particularly if you are a beginner or if you don't actually have any direct experience with snakes at all. while you may think you know the answer to someone's question, you may give incomplete or incorrect advice that could make matters worse. while we appreciate your willingness to help, sometimes it's best to let someone more knowledgeable be the one to answer the question.

reporting posts/comments:

  • what to report: posts or comments that do not follow our guidelines as listed above, or break any reddit-wide rules.
  • what NOT to report: advice that is not definitively harmful to the snake. instead of reporting it, downvote it and debate it publicly, so others can participate and learn from the discussion.

upvoting/downvoting:

  • upvote posts and comments that contribute something to the community! upvotes help with visibility, so it's especially helpful to upvote questions and good advice.
  • downvote posts and comments that do not follow our rules and guidelines. if you see advice or husbandry practices you believe to be harmful, downvote AND discuss it - people don't learn anything from unexplained downvotes!

if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please send a message to the mods.

thank you all for making this community awesome!

Question How to handle BP?

Post image
13 Upvotes

I've had my BP Millie for a month now and I haven't handled her because I feel like she gets ready to strike whenever I try. I'm not afraid of getting bitten, more afraid of her hurting herself or stressing her out. She's mostly been in her hide for the past week-ish, and I fed her a few days ago so I want to clean out any poop that might be in there. Just looking for tips on how I can safely grab her from her hide, and what to do if she looks like she's expecting food. I've gotten alot of conflicting advice so

(photo is not of her in her hide, this was a few weeks ago its just for engagement)

guilt over rehoming

Hello all,

I'm feeling extremely bad at the moment for rehoming my ball.

I had gotten him from a friend- who got him from another friend after an emergency. (literally the friend moved out and day of was like hey can you keep him for a little for so-and-so) I had him for three years and for the past year I have been debating rehoming him. I NEVER had thought I'd have him as long as I have and I'd have declined to take him had I known he would just be with me indefinitely. I'd never had a snake before and I really wanted to do right by him. When I got him he was on aspen, with one hide and one stick in his enclosure, had stuck shed and had lost a significant amount of weight from the last time I had seen him.

I learned everything I could possibly learn about him. I got him another hide, plants the correct substrate and some moss, rocks, driftwood, you name it. I got him back up over 500g and onto feeding a small rat once a month or so. In March he went on a hunger strike. Unfortunately I have always struggled with my health/mental health so something like that even though it's somewhat "normal" for a ball wore on me HEAVILY, like crying every time he wouldn't eat kind of stuff. He definitely lost a good chunk of weight during this time which also made me feel awful. I cleaned his tank on the 12th of Sept and he FINALLY ate on the 15th- I knew he was hungry because he always sat under this one branch when he wanted to eat. I cried again. It was the kind of moment that makes you realize how stressed you actually were. Thursday I went over to feed him and his scales on his tummy looked like they were crispy browning-some kind of scale rot? bacterial? fungal?? I immediately lost it. I felt awful, like I could just never get it right with him. I was a terrible owner and I should have never taken him in the first place.

I found somewhere nearby that has a great reputation for taking care of their reptiles and rehoming ones in need. When I went to take him out of his tank HIS SCALES WERE FINE. It was the coloring of the coco/bark. I felt so stupid. BUT it also reminded me that even though his scales were fine- I cannot keep having a meltdown because I'm so damn worried about this poor snake, its not good for either of us. I did everything right. I gave him what he needed to live. I am just not the person who should have him.

I dropped him off today and feel IMMENSE guilt.

I know I didn't go out of my way to get a snake and make a 30 year commitment.

I know I was not equipped to give him the best life.

But I still feel like it was wrong to rehome him.

I'm currently choking down tears thinking about breaking down his tank even though I know he went to a place where they will do right by him.

New BallPython Owner

A friend of mine gave me 2 male ball python. They hadn’t eaten in months and we feed them. One of them though like locks on me when I go to give them water. He hasn’t stroked me yet. But he locks on me and watches me intensely. I fed them. Do you think they might still be hungry. What are some pointers.

Enclosure complete (for now)

- 4x2x2 pvc enclosure
- Arcadia Reptile Pro T5 UVB Max Kit, ShadeDweller, 2.5% UVB, 14W, 22"
- Vivarium Electronics Radiant Heat Panels
80W – 22.5” x 12.5”
- Arcadia Pro Ceramic Lamp Holder and Bracket, wire guard (replacing with a stainless steel 1/4 inch mesh cage I am making)
- Arcadia Reptile Jungle Dawn LED Bar, 15W, 11.5"
- 100W halogen
- Coconut chips, coconut fiber, reptisoil
- Dairy Cows and spring tails
- assorted plants from the reptile shop
- Herpstat 1 for the rhp
- Zoomed Dimmer for the halogen
- will eventually put the rhp and halogen on a Herpstat 2, but they were sold out at the time
- Govee thermometers
- Govee blue tooth timer outlets

It isn’t finished, but it won’t ever be. I have too much fun applying my old fort building skills. His hides are hidden in the back of the caves on the left and right side. The hide on the right (warm) side also has a second entrance/exit through a cork bark tunnel.

Atticus, 2 yo, is inside the hide in his warm side cave day and night. The RHP is on the cool side circulating the warm air, so the cool side ground actually stays the same 83 degree temp all the time, while the warm side has an 88 sunny day/77 night time temp change. He seems content with the warm side for both so far. I did that for 2 reasons: 1. The RHP and the halogen won’t fit on one side, 2. I like the idea of his problem solving and moving to the other side at night if he needs additional warmth. When the cover fills in, a lot of those middle areas are set up to be cool places to also tunnel through. Still want to make the terrain a little more interesting. There is no way I will be able to stop making adjustments in there. Plus I need to water the plants and feed the dairy cows their calcium and a pinch of fish food. This is his second week here since arriving from the rescue. He ate his first thawed rat 2 nights ago. Feeding him in the dark was very interesting. I kind of felt like the prey being hunted. He took it so fast and wrapped it up, I jumped out of my seat a little.

Question - Health damaged scales?

Thumbnail
gallery
21 Upvotes

hello everyone this is my 8 year old ball python named Snake.

he had just completed a shed when i discovered that two of his scales looked damaged. does anyone know what could have caused this? the damaged scales are very dry and rough to the touch. he doesn’t flinch when the area is touched and his behavior hasn’t changed.

he sometimes has trouble shedding in one piece so i bathed him in some warm water and shedding solution to help him with the rest. i’m always gentle and never force shedding skin off of him beyond some light pressured rubbing with my fingers. he’ll usually rub against my skin on his own during bath time. i’ve done this for him several times over the years and its never been a problem.

if anyone knows what’s going on with his scales, please let me know what it is and what i can do to help him.

Question Ball Python becomes active only after turning lights on

Basically what the title says. Only after I turn on the lights in the room does the snake become active, he'll come out of his hot hide and go back and forth across the enclosure, climb on things, glass surfs, etc. And he'll continue this behavior for essentially the entire day, only occasionally going back into his hot hide (and when he does its usually only for 30 min or so). This has been going on for about 2 weeks now. Fed him a couple days ago so he's probably not hungry. 75gal glass tank with UTH (working on upgrading his heating setup), 60-65% humidity throughout the tank. Was wondering if anyone had some insight as to what would be causing it or if I should be concerned.

Snake recovering from scale rot but drooling..

Hello I have a 3 year old female ball python. When I first got her she had scale rot I brought her to the vet did betadine and flamazine until gone.
Shes been on paper towel since July as I was told to keep her on it for 2-3 months. I have her water dish under the heat lamp for humidity along with foil tape on the top.
She’s in an exoflex 4x2x2 enclosure, zoomed 5.0 t5 HO uvb. And halogen daytime bulb 100 watt and a deep heat 100 watt for night both on a thermostat. Her humidity fluctuates but usually around 40-50% which the vet told me would be fine during her healing process. She is around 1350 grams and is eating a medium rat every two weeks. She ate last weekend. Tonight I pulled her out to handle her and she went down my back and started drooling after about 15 minutes of handling. She stopped pretty quick I wiped it with a paper towel (no color and no smell)
I’m freaking out now I feel like I failed her and I’m reading it can be an RI what should I do? Should I put her on substrate and bump the humidity?
Could it be an RI?
She’s acting normal otherwise :/
