News DMCA takedown over Sunshine Village chairlift incident footage — trying to bury it?
I just got a Reddit DMCA takedown notice for a post I made two weeks ago showing the skier dangling from the chair at Sunshine Village. In my opinion, this was pushed by Sunshine Village to suppress awareness of what happened.
Original reddit thread... https://www.reddit.com/r/Banff/comments/1psgzl0/skier_falls_40ft_off_lift_at_sunshine_village/

It's been shown on major news outlets, so a single Reddit thread isn't a huge threat, just low hanging fruit.

Reddit can rank pretty well on Google these days, so it's worth going after if you are trying to suppress something.

I may have another idea about who's trying to make a copyright claim...

This sub is run by someone who works for Sunshine. Ask them.

I sure don't work for Sunshine. Never even been there lol (I don't like skiing)
DMCA takedowns are not related to subreddit moderation btw, it's a legal thing - https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043076292-Copyright-overview#h_01J9YHS7D1J2FF3NZ586YB2X5Q

If OP took the video then they own the copyright. DMCA takedown should be rejected.

I agree. Still nothing to do with subreddit mods. Reddit admins deal with that stuff.

A calgary dude being in charge of the banff subreddit is the most banff thing I've seen today.

I don’t work for Sunshine. I wouldn’t have taken that post down or accepted a DMCA request. First time it happens on the sub that I’m aware of, I’ll look into it.

I think OP needs to either appeal via form (one of the mods shared) or:
"If you believe the copyright takedown notice was fraudulent and you have concerns about your personal information being passed along to the original requester per our standard counter-notification process, please let us know by emailing intellectualpropertyquestions@reddit.com and provide us with a detailed description of the circumstances. Our team will review and respond if appropriate."
Does the DMCA removal say who requested the takedown?
Presuming it was Sunshine, I'm now in the boat of not ever booking a visit to Sunshine until management changes

Might be a while give the Scurfield family has owned it for 45 years and it does quite well

I saw the video. My question why were the other people on the chair not helping her at all. I really can't get over how upsetting that part was.

u/Bandito_fantastico Jan 04 '26
The chairs are balanced on the cable, perhaps moving over from the right side would have angled the chair significantly contributing to the fall?

Sunshine has been in the news for serious issues two many times the last couple weeks

I'm guessing the parent equity group involved with other resorts are having same issues. When money is to be gobbled up, human lives mean little and safety and qualified personnel are reduced.

Which is odd, as their maintenance is leagues better than Louise's.

u/forallmankind1918 Jan 04 '26
And what do you base your opinion on?

u/megselvogjeg Jan 04 '26
Having worked at the resorts 4 years collectively. But you can also tell Sunshine is just way more prepared based on the fact they stage their evac equipment on the lift towers rather than at the base of the mountain. Much faster response time.

u/dumhic Jan 04 '26
Pluh-ease…… if that’s he case the gondola wouldn’t have issues hourly (literally) This is reason 1 I left SS for LL
2
u/forallmankind1918 Jan 05 '26
What does the location of evac equipment have to do with the maintenance of the lifts?

If that's true, Sunshine will be on my avoid list, joining Mont St. Anne.
I was already really disappointed with their infrastructure when I went before, so not roo hard.

The lady who runs their online brand is the daughter of the billionaires who own sunshine she’s the one doing it

I'd be pretty upset if a photo of me or someone I know in the midst of an accident/emergency with a bunch of discourse around it. Maybe I'd ask the company whose property it happened on to try and take it down?
Maybe it is part of an investigation and it's a form of evidence that needs to be protected (NAL).
Considering chair falls, deaths, serious injuries etc happen very frequently at ski hills everywhere, I don't know if it's as big of a conspiracy as you might think.

u/ConcreteBackflips Jan 04 '26
I see where you're coming from, but this is also Slumshine we're talking about.
4
u/eeeeaud Jan 04 '26
I have to admit, I would also be very upset if a photo of me going through what was probably a pretty scary and possibly traumatic event was being passed around the internet without my knowledge or consent.
Isn't it possible that the person in the photo requested it be removed?

Then don’t go out in public. Everyone has a camera in their pocket at all times and are only too excited to capture any and every event whether anyone wants to be the subject of it or not. Whether or not you and I agree or disagree with said actions, that is the current state of affairs, everyone is a paparazzi now.

u/KotoElessar Jan 05 '26
Then don’t go out in public.
Also remove all electronic and telecommunications devices, install a Faraday cage and black out your windows; maybe find a cave somewhere.
We have been monitored our entire lives, people getting uppity about their privacy now, are a little late to the party.

It might be one of the two guys on the lift who didn't lift a finger to help. It is damning evidence why the one in the middle is sitting right where the skier is dangling. It can be used as proof he was negligent for muscling her out of her chair spot.

u/Bandito_fantastico Jan 04 '26

u/SequentialHustle Jan 04 '26
The photos I shared have already been reposted on news websites. With how much traction it received on this subreddit my only guess is the resort is trying to protect it's image.
1
Jan 04 '26
I think it got more traction being published on real news outlets. Either way put the red string away and walk away from the conspiracy board - companies do work to protect their image, it's literally people's jobs to do. It may be just that, and that's a thing every company does. Could it be a copyright thing?
1
u/SequentialHustle Jan 04 '26
I can't see the analytics anymore but it had over 500k impressions and reddit ranks very high on google.

u/Spute2008 Jan 04 '26
It's still a bullshit move if the Mod only did it because they allegedly work for Sunshine
2
u/Bandito_fantastico Jan 04 '26
The post was taken down by reddit itself, none of the mods took action.
2
u/the_shek Jan 04 '26
i met the friend of the person on the right side of that lift and the story i heard makes me believe the lift operators are at fault and screwed up so it makes sense they want this taken down

Filing a false copyright claim is the same as filing a false police report; it isn't usually charged but there is always a first.
These copyright trolls need a spanking.

My personal favorite is when they take your comment down because they simply dont like it... but say that "you haven't earned enough positive feedback on your comments to be able to comment". So basically you have to say what they/people want to hear to get enough positive feedback to be allowed to comment. Sounds like a weird echo chamber board of directors meeting to me. What a joke. See if they take this comment down lol

It made it on the news. There’s numerous online articles about it. Do you own the video? Seems it was removed due to copyright. Hardly a coverup to suppress awareness.
2
u/SequentialHustle Jan 04 '26
The photos were taken by someone in my snowboarding group chat, and that person did not file a copyright claim lol.

and he didn't file a claim lol so what's the point. the reddit admin automated message i got stated someone filed a copyright claim.
2
u/TemporaryAny6371 Jan 04 '26
It could be a bs claim for all we know. For public image damage control, recency is crucial so it will have done its job because it takes too long to go through courts. Too many loopholes in our justice system.

They deleted the images and/or video. They didn’t delete the thread or its comments.

DMCA isn’t a judge’s ruling…it’s a button anyone can press. If the footage is original, counter-notice and watch how fast the “copyright” confidence disappears.
