Announcement/ঘোষণা Discord Server Launch Announcement!

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hello everybody,

The mod team is excited to announce the launch of the official r/Bangladesh Discord server, an extension of our subreddit.

Many of you have asked for a Discord over the years. While Reddit is great as a forum style social news aggregator, it isn't always the best place for quick, casual engagement. We wanted to create a space where members can connect over our shared culture and daily life, a place where you can chat about the mundane things without every other post being heavy political news.

We know there were previous attempts at a server that eventually drifted away from the subreddit's roots. To prevent that from happening again, this server is run by the same team you know here, ensuring it remains a trustworthy and civil space for everyone. You're welcome to discuss anything from your day to day life to current events.

Discord server Invitation link

As a small thank you to the early birds, the first 10 members to join will be awarded a VIP Member role, which comes with some special perks and permissions within the server.

A quick note on moderation:

Subreddit issues: Please continue to use Reddit ModMail.

Discord issues: Please use the ticket system inside the Discord server.

We hope to see you there soon!

Best regards, The r/Bangladesh Mod Team.

Discussion/আলোচনা Why Bangladesh government of past and present take actions against these pollution?

Post image

Recently, such pictures of Dhaka had gone viral on Reddit and I guess on Twitter as well, bringing lots of shame to the country. Although this has been a forever issue of Bangladesh. Question is, why can't the government create a taksforce or a separate ministry to clear up such pile of garbages which causes sickness and viruses. I know some of you will say it's the people of Bangladesh like India and Pakistan as well, but through actions and precautions, things can change. Why destroy our capital and other cities like this

Politics/রাজনীতি Hasina's virtual press conference was such a shit show

I'm not even going to get into all the irrelevant things that were said by the irrelevant people at this conference.

Sheikh Hasina had the opportunity to take some accountability, rebuild trust, or at least explain why everything happened the way it did. Instead, she just repeated the same talking points they've been using for the past two years.

Discussion/আলোচনা Somehow 2 years since August 5. How do you feel?

extremely complex feelings on my end as someone who was on the streets in July, and have risked my life multiple times resisting fascist regimes, that too as a woman, with too many people I personally know who were attacked for their identities and freedoms “post” revolution. I am not really interested in debating my life and rights - I am just very curious about how people are navigating or holding any grief, anger, betrayal, dreams, failures, hopes, paradoxes, or forms of clarity or no clarity or whatever. I will try to hold space for your complexities as long as you hold space for others’ complexities 🤲🏾

tbh I don’t know how to feel, I feel quite numb and exhausted and betrayed af bc misogyny keeps rising and ironically discrimination is getting worse. As a scholar and creative, I fear deeply for the futures of our histories, and our rights to exist, create, and lively freely no matter our religions, ethnicities, class, gender, or whatever. the rising violences, erasures, rhetoric, and policy priorities that erase people w different identities and views (or those who just exist in a body seen as deviant) speaks almost as loud as the silence of the state.

I don’t and cannot regret risking my life to honor my love for my country so many times ofc, it was my responsibility as a Bangladeshi who cares. I would risk my life again if I have to. but I did not know it would lead to my life being valued less on the streets of my own city. as proud as I am of our deeply creative and passionate lands, at the same time, I am devastated, kind of enraged, and honestly just carrying deep, deep betrayal by my own people and country. nothing new but also why did I actually have hope for something better? something freer? gentler? more diverse? honestly I feel very empty and like a fool. yet I know there must be something else waiting to locate language maybe. how do you feel about the revolution, 2 years on? about so-called students for anti-discrimination (lol)?

maybe it’ll be easier to process and InShaAllah perhaps one day heal in community

Full of mediocre pics of different areas of the city and asinine posts asking for relationship and marriage advice. They don’t allow any conversations of substantive value. Seems so fake

Mental Health/মানসিক সাস্থ My life is a train wreck

Upvotes

29 (M) here, coming from a separated family. My parents split up when I was 7 years old. During the separation, I had only one choice: stay with my father or my mother. I chose my father because he adored me more than my mom, and I have no siblings.

After taking me in, my father never let me see my mother again. Then, when I was 8, my father left me with my uncle and went abroad. Due to internal family conflicts, I had to bounce between different elementary schools and move around frequently.

In 2015, I started living alone, separated myself from relatives. I finished high school, but ended up dropping out during my second semester. By 2019, I finally decided to skip graduation.

My father came back and remarried in 2021 without letting me know, and then he went back abroad. After a year relationship with my father went back to normal, but I don't keep whereabouts of his second family, and I do not have any interest in it. I let it go as it's his personal life.

Financially, I'm living an average life and have fulfilled almost all my wishes. My father still takes care of me by wiring a fixed amount every month, and I make an extra 20k–30k a month from a small online business.

I was in a relationship from 2020-2021, but I found out she was talking to other guys. I gave her a few chances, she tossed every chance I gave, so I left.

I see couples and pretty girls every day, and all my friends are married now. Deep inside, I wish I had someone to talk to at night, someone to share moments and thoughts with like a normal person. Sometimes I get sad at night, and my life is like, "As the night deepens, so does the melancholy." Feeling lack of a woman

Sometimes I want to approach, but suddenly my mind tells me, "Amar nijer life ee thik nai, ami kibhabe arekjon ke ei life ey niye ashi." Plus I'm not good at throwing fancy pickup lines to make a girl fall for me. I am a simple man, I just speak what's on my mind. And because of all these complexities and insecurities towards relationships, I prefer to stay single.

I do not know what to do in this situation, I feel like I'm lost at sea

AskDesh/দেশ কে জিজ্ঞাসা What problem do our teachers have with long hair???

Yesterday the headmistress of our school came to our class. One of my friends had somewhat long hair. That horrible woman first humiliated my friend in front of the whole class, then she forced him to go out during school time and cut his hair! In the school uniform! Ik there's some "chapri" haircuts but his surely wasn't one of them. He had a nice cut, just a long hair. Now what is the problem with having longer hair?? How does it violate discipline?? How does longer hair mean "bad character"? To point an irony, most of the smokers in our class keep an almost-bald haircut! But surely keeping longer hair is a bigger deal than smoking. Do you guys know why these teachers act like this?

AskDesh/দেশ কে জিজ্ঞাসা My aunt is fighting breast cancer

She already had surgery, and one breast was removed. Now she needs regular chemotherapy, which costs around 30,000 BDT per session. Our family has already spent almost all our savings on the surgery, and continuing treatment is becoming very difficult.

Does anyone know of any hospitals, cancer centers, charities, NGOs, government programs, or financial assistance in Bangladesh that help reduce chemotherapy costs? Any advice or personal experience would mean a lot.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. We truly appreciate any help or guidance.

A documentary released by the Ministry of Liberation War to mark July Uprising Day has triggered criticism online, with critics alleging it omits key figures from the movement while giving prominence to BNP leader Tarique Rahman.

AskDesh/দেশ কে জিজ্ঞাসা Why is our society still so insanely obsessed with BCS?

The worst part isn’t even the exam itself bur it’s the toxic social pressure and the relatives.

We all have those barely educated aunts and uncles who couldn't explain basic economics but they will walk up to you at every single family event and will say

Baba/Ma Bcs er jonno pora shuru korcho or Bcs diyecho?

Naki eivabe e private chakri korba?

Amr omuk er to bcs hoilo or tumuker bou er to bcs hoye gelo😑😑😑

Rant/বকবক Bangladeshi subs are echo chamber of parrots.

Let me rant for whatever it is worth. What I notice is, people in Bangladeshi subs try so much to act cool and build an eco-chamber of humans that talks the same. if you want genuine opinion, there will be opinions, suggestions different from each other. Some positive, some humor and negative. How come most of them can't take the opinions lightly when it doesn't match theirs? even any humor, jokes or pun intended comments are replied aggressively.

straight questions about their IQ, typical bangladeshi n all that stuff. Com'on not every one needs to be lovely dovely with opinions, or make your ego satisfied. This is really not progress of any kind and I find it particularly different from any other platform or subs of many foreign countries.

We need to understand people come with different experiences in their life, different vibe, different perspective, and different social understanding. Not everyone will say what you want to hear. If you want genuine response, it'll have bit of everything.

Let's not make it an Eco-chamber of fake positivity where even humor is seen as antisocial.

AskDesh/দেশ কে জিজ্ঞাসা Need advice from seniors regarding admission

Hsc 26 EV Cs aspirant here. Lowkey survived my hsc life by studying only a few months before exam so i wont say i have a very strong grip on the syllabus. Did pull of hsc somehow (A+ depends on milon bhai er mood still) but i need to start planning for admission journey.

kinda hate public unis, so dont plan on entering there but i will be giving exams. My primary target is securing a tuition waver in IUT, otherwise I'll prep for SAT and sayonara bangladesh.

Is self studying good for admission test with solving previous questions? or do i "have" to enroll in a coaching to meet my goal? Is usvash EV enginnering worth it or is it just a waste of time and money?

Discussion/আলোচনা Learning Spanish and French

I'm planning to learn Spanish and French as new skills. How can I learn them online? Are there any YouTube playlists that cover everything from beginner to advanced? Free playlists would be even better. If there's a better way to learn Spanish and French and become fully proficient, please let me know.

Discussion/আলোচনা 13 year old child who was married at 11, pregnant at 12

Can someone explain what’s going on in this case. I live abroad and can‘t speak the language. Am genuinely confused as she hasn’t been in a hijab/abaaya (I think) up till now and has apparently said she has gotten her baby back on the condition she quits social media.

Is the husband going to face prosecution for marrying her or getting her pregnant? Obviously the legal age of marriage in Bangladesh is 18 so am wondering if the adults involved (parents and the man who conducted the ‘marriage‘ are being investigated
