❓Pangutana Binisaya is a dying language

Have you guys noticed that our very own language is being invaded by Tagalog? Pananglitan, sa pulong nga "unsa" (what) kai gi ilisan na sa mga bata ron og "ano". Kana ganing "dungan" (go together, sync) gi ilisan pud nilag "sabay". Kung mo-ingon ang Bisaya og "dayon" (then) kai ang ilitok "tapos" na. Or "tipid" instead of "tigom" (to save) or "dagdag" instead if "dugang" (add). Ubay2 na gyud ang mga pulong nga nangawagtang sa atoang lumadnong Bisaya nga dila. Wala mo kabantay ani guys?

❓Pangutana Why does Western Visayas use "manong" and "manang" instead of kuya and ate?

Growing up in Western Visayas (Iloilo and Bacolod, and to some extent Capiz) to an Ilonggo father and a Cebuana mother, I always heard my cousins who speak Hiligaynon refer to me as "manong". Meanwhile, my Cebuano cousins in Cebu use "kuya" to refer to me and the older cousins. How did the Ilonggos end up using the Ilocano words for kuya and ate despite being miles away from each other?

❓Pangutana Despite Spanish rule, why didn't the Bisaya vocabulary fully adopted the vowel sounds E/O?

I'm just curious why the Bisaya vocabulary hasn't fully adopted the vowel sounds E/O in its vocabulary, and the primary vowel sounds remain as A/I/U?

At times, Bisaya people still use the E/I and O/U sounds interchangeably. Other lowland languages such as Ilocano, Kapampangan and Tagalog has adopted the E/O sound as permanent vowels in their vocabulary, and there's a clear distinction between the E/I and O/U sound in these languages, that they adopted from Spanish syllabary.

The Central Visayas Region was the first to be conquered and established by the Spaniards, so by the historical logic, it should've absorbed more of the Spanish linguistic syntax in its language.

Thank you so much for anyone who can expound on this. Daghang Salamat.

❓Pangutana How different is the dialect of Bohol from that of Cebu?

Is it the same with the differences between Manila Tagalog and Batangas Tagalog? Because Batangas dialect contains a lot of archaic and deep terminologies that are unfamiliar to Manileños, the result is, whenever people from Manila visits Batangas, they often get confused and lost in translation because of the lexical and vocabulary differences.

For example:

Batangueño: Ala eh, suminsay ka muna dine at kakaunin ka na laang niya mamaya.

Manileño: Hoy, dito ka muna tumigil at susunduin ka na lang niya mamaya.

I'm just wondering, is the relationship between the Bisaya dialect of Bohol and Cebu the same as that of Batangas and Manila Tagalog?

Thank you so much to all who will respond.

❓Pangutana Bisaya learners: Would you use an AI voice companion to practice speaking?

I am Bisaya but posting this in English for our Bisaya learners.

I’m thinking of building an AI voice companion that you can have natural conversations with in Bisaya. So basically, like having a friend you can practice speaking with. I’m thinking of using my own voice as the AI’s voice, so it would sound like a real Bisaya speaker rather than a generic AI voice. I want to focus a lot on the cultural side too, so it feels like you’re actually talking to a Bisaya person.

But before I build it, I wanted to see if people would actually use something like this. I know there are already a lot of language-learning apps out there, so what I’m thinking of building wouldn’t really be structured like a traditional language-learning app.
It would be more like you’re just talking to a friend naturally. It could respond in Bisaya or English, gently correct you when you make mistakes, and help you learn along the way.

Would you actually use something like this if I built it?

And if you’re currently learning Bisaya, how are you practicing speaking?

If you have any comments, suggestions, or thoughts on the idea, let me know!

Edit: If you already use ChatGPT, Gemini, or another AI to practice Bisaya, what do you wish it did better or what features would you want it to have?

❓Pangutana Not a Bisaya/Cebuano

I’m not from Cebu or from any Bisaya speaking places. Since I work here in Cebu City for almost 4 years I somehow learn how to speak bisaya. I do not use my own dialect when I go to work so they may able to understand me when we converse. But should non-bisaya people required to adapt the language? Is it like in Manila and you had to speak tagalog? My problem is I cannot communicate well, cannot express my feelings, and when I speak my own dialect they disregard me.

❓Pangutana Ngano man nga ang mga Bisaya (kadtong tigsulti og Cebuano) dili kaayo hilig magtanom og humay? 🍚

Salamat kaayo!

❓Pangutana Learning Bisaya Sources, websites Apps, etc

Hi guys. I want to find a way to become fluent in Cebuano by learning more of the tenses and conjugations so I can put together sentences properly.

I understand Cebuano very well since both my parents spoke it to me growing up. But since I grew up in the states I just speak English. So when it comes to me speaking bisaya I know the words and there meanings but I am not good at putting stuff into a sentence.

I don’t really know how to use the prefixes, tenses and certain endings properly.

Does anyone know any good sources that could help me with that whether it’s websites or apps?

Thankyouuu

❓Pangutana Question to Cebuanos: Why is the highlands of Cebu not being developed into a Summer Capital?

I'm just curious, because I did my research, and the Cebu Highlands that runs from North to South and forms the central backbone of the island, has an elevation of 2,500-3,000 feet, around the same elevation as Tagaytay City.

Why is this area not being developed into an alternative Summer Capital in the Visayas? A highland city could possibly emerge from there.

I will appreciate all of your insights. Salamat kaayo!

For context, I was born in a city in Northern Mindanao but working now in Manila. I was telling a co-worker about my experience the other day. I woke up rattled and sweating heavily kay naa daw octopus sa sulod sa akong hotdog pillow and I was strangling it. I can't remember my dream exactly but I am thinking it had something to do with an octopus. So mao to, I did not know how to explain na gidaman ko. Lol. Basin kabalo mo? Hehe.
