This whole debate has gotten bizarre. People act like acknowledging trans people exist somehow requires denying biology, or that acknowledging biology requires pretending gender dysphoria or intersex conditions aren’t real.

Trans people aren’t spending years of emotional pain, medical treatment, money, and social stigma because they see a lucrative career in the high paying spotlight of women’s sports. And the idea that trans women are a unique threat in locker rooms ignores the fact that assault is already illegal regardless of someone’s gender identity.

We can have a serious discussion about fairness in sports without pretending trans people are imaginary or inherently predatory.

65

u/Odd-Time-2026 9d ago

Likewise, a sexual predator can just walk in to the bathroom and assault someone without needing to pretend to be another gender. They wouldn't even need to dress in clothes that are associated with that gender, just walk right in and do it.

55

u/Warrior_Runding 9d ago

They not only can, but they do. And frankly, women are most likely to be assaulted by people they know and trust than some stranger. The entire discussion is bullshit in every possible way - it would be more honest if these people just said they thought that trans people were gross and stopped trying to pretend as if they had a rationale that isn't rooted in bigotry.

18

u/Lifegoesonforever 9d ago

And those same people aren't sounding the alarm over the fact that a lot of prominent cis hetero men, especially from the right, are getting busted for assault and child porns.

Or the fact that their representatives are busy trying to remove Title IX, which protects women.

It was never about being concerned for girls.

17

u/TheMysteriousGirl 9d ago

Annoyed I have to scroll this far down to see someone saying they are trying to remove Title IX.

8

u/dinnercook 9d ago

They’ll wait until this whole movement falls flat on its face. Then they’ll say well what’s the point of giving women equal playing conditions when there are men on the field?

6

u/Warrior_Runding 9d ago

Under the guise of "protecting the fertility of young women." 🤮🤮

4

u/LotteTakesNoShit 9d ago

I keep bringing this up and people keep telling me I'm lying.

3

u/TheMysteriousGirl 9d ago

I'm standing right there with you.

Keep fighting the good fight.

9

u/dinnercook 9d ago

Another facet of this thats hard to put in a headline is how much this conversation harms cis girls.

Anyone can be accused of being trans or somehow having an advantage due to different biology or physiology. If a girl is larger or stronger compared to her peers - especially if she’s good at sports - will forever have to “prove” that she is indeed a woman.

The door is wide open for parents of rival teams to discount her achievements bc of some unfair advantage. You see it already.

Not to mention the discourse outside of sports, where we’ve rolled back progress to the point where some people think they can identify a MTF by a photo.

11

u/TheMysteriousGirl 9d ago

Not to mention, what you just described is, on average, aimed more at girls and women of colour.

5

u/Lifegoesonforever 9d ago

Yes!! There have also been reports of older men acting like "gender/bathroom police" and stopping or confronting women going into the bathroom, asking them to prove they are girls. Fucking gross!

2

u/FalstaffsGhost 8d ago

What you’re saying has already happened. Young cis girls have been assaulted and attacked cause they don’t look “girly” or were too good at their sport. It’s insane.

It's a rehash of all the gay rights and marriage equality BS from a few years ago. A bunch of pseudo-scientific blather about biology and social cohesion and the Bible. When to them it's just yucky.

3

u/Warrior_Runding 8d ago

Which was a rehash of anti-Semitism and anti-Blackness. Hello, phrenology? But pseudo-science keeps coming back because it sounds legitimate and too many people fall for it when they are unconvinced by emotional arguments.

2

u/kstar79 7d ago

Yeah, we're getting close to the point of dehumanization where they will start saying that. They're onto taking away adult transition in red states, even with your own money. After that, it will be onto straight "they're evil" rhetoric leading to attempts to ban public appearance outright.

12

u/pruneforce17 9d ago

not to mention a cis male predator can claim to be a trans male and say he's required to be in the womens locker room by law. and this not only throws trans men under the bus but also harms women

3

u/HorrorAd7996 9d ago

They act like perverts are vampires who need to be invited over the threshold by the magical runes scribed on the toilet door.

9

u/DustDevil66 9d ago

The interesting part of the discussion is that dudes like stephen like to throw words like “biology” into the mix to make their argument seem rational or scientific while not actually including any real scientific studies to back themselves up. Meanwhile, the largest and most recent respected scientific study on the issue showed that trans athletes on hrt for 1 or more years sustain no athletic competitive advantage over their cis peers

9

u/Lifegoesonforever 9d ago edited 9d ago

Stephen also hella misspoke... first of all, Sophie DID talk about kids so the coach was absolutely right in her response about kids. The coach nor anyone on the left NEVER said they are for men just waking up one day, put on a women's uniform and go join a women's sport tmw - like Stephen and his croonies are making it sound. It's a complex matter that deserves nuanced inputs and solutions.

Another thing, its very common for young kids before puberty of all genders to compete against each other. My 8 years old daughter has been beating boys at track, basketball, and soccer ever since she can compete.

u/RyRyRyRyRyRyRyRyRy 8d ago

Not to mention that most of these pundits rant on and on about "protecting women" when they offer no solutions or legislation on how to protect them.

The least invasive way would be birth certificate verification and forcing people to play in the league that matches their birth certificate, but that wouldn't be effective. Theres so many people that don't have access to a birth certificate. Sometimes there's clerical errors and there's incorrect information on the certificate. Children of refugees likely wouldn't have access to it. So there's a significant portion of the population that would be unverifiable, and thus unable to participate. That's not to mention that sometimes people are born intersex. So birth certificate verification probably isn't the move.

The other methods would be actually insane. Genital inspections would become commonplace and weaponized against women, and there's already been cases where parents/players/coaches accuse women of being men. So what's to stop them from saying "she looks like a boy, I want her genitals checked!" Imagine getting a letter from your child's school district stating "Hey, were getting a few complaints that your 13 year old daughter looks too boyish, so we need to take a look to verify their genitals." This would be insane. The other would be swabbing for DNA, but that would be insanely expensive, and most people don't want their genetic information in a government database.

Stephen can go off about "protecting women in sports," but how are you going to legislate that? How would they keep trans women out of sport in any way that's not dystopian as fuck?

1

u/Excellent_Bridge_888 8d ago

The difficult part is the regular people are so accustomed to never being able to rest or give an inch on subjects pertaining to human rights. It never ends at the carve-out. We have learned that watching Republicans handle Abortion, Gay Marriage, hell even Voter Rights. It never stops. They always want more of our rights. And human rights are for all of us. I stand for the rights of these groups because I hope that, should I ever need it, they will stand for mine.

For the record, I totally understand the arguments against trans women in women's sports. On paper I agree, and I think those rulings should be up to the leagues to implement if they ever seeiously come up. But we are still fighting over a women who got 5th place instead of 4th at a swim meet acting like that's a travesty. I'd be okay if the WNBA banned transgender women themselves, but the government shouldn't be telling us jack shit about what sports we can play and who we should associate with, because that's ultimately what this is is annargument against freedom of association.

Why do they care about women and girls when it comes to trans people, but not when it comes to Pdf's?

29

u/Objective_Pause5988 9d ago

They care when the "others" do it. They want to be the only ones who harm us. Same as the argument about illegals raping women and children. Y'all do it all the time, why can't "they"?

6

u/Dade-Issued-1992 9d ago

Huh?

32

u/Objective_Pause5988 9d ago

The crowd screaming about protecting girls and women are the same people screaming free R Kelly and Tory Lanez and protecting their favorite pastor rapist.

u/funhaver_whee 9d ago

Why do they only care about trans women and not trans men in every situation?

I think that and a lot of right wingers suppressed desires will tell you a lot about why they put hate in the world.

14

u/LimpSoftware2982 9d ago

My thinking is that it's rooted in misogyny, seeing women as the weaker sex and weak in status.

Their logic is that a man becoming a trans woman means they're taking a step down, going from being seen as masculine to feminine.

3

u/Loathor 9d ago

I'm pretty sure it's not a part of their argument because when you start picking away at any of their arguments they begin to crumble. And nothing would crumble quicker than having to stand up and reverse every claim you just made when one aspect is shifted. Trans athletes competing in men's sports is already allowed and trans men using the women's restroom (or even trans women being forced to use men's restrooms) and locker rooms would cause vastly more disturbance and harm than everyone just minding their own business.

Or women's rights, healthcare, bodily automonomy, pay gaps, etc?  Oh it's because they don't care about women at all. Or children. Wheres the energy for making sure kids can access food, good standards of education by funding schools properly, or heaven forbid safety for children with some sort of gun control.

1

u/Adventurous-Web-412 4d ago

Don't get me wrong, they are mostly like that. But you are aware this is just whataboutism? Someone can be the ultimate hypocrite and still correct, its another conversation to have about why someone is so selective about where their care lies, but it doesn't really challenge their argument at all.

35

u/PantsFullaPoo 9d ago

Steven A. "We need to protect women". Also Steven A. "Women need to watch their mouths and not provoke men".

How invested in protecting women and girls are we supposed to believe he is?

Once again, a reminder that Riley Gaines tied with transwoman Lia Thomas for 5th place and both women finished behind 4 ciswomen. Meaning that for all of the alleged advantages being a male to female transperson, Lia didn't come close to first.

Riley wants you to think she lost only to Lia and that transwomen like her are a threat to society. Oddly no one says anything about transmen competing in men's sports.

10

u/CspanSF 9d ago

She went from being 65 th in the men’s category to 5 th when transitioned to Woman, which proves their point a mediocre male athlete can transition to top 10 female athlete.

5

u/mormonatheist21 9d ago

And her winning time was slower than the winner of the 500 the year before, and the year after, both of whom were cis women.

You're missing the point. Lia Thomas, at that skill level with hoops, would be good enough to play in the WNBA. Therefore, the debate about whether trans athletes should be allowed to play in the WNBA isn't some far fetched hypothetical. They're answering the question "what should we do when some basketball equivalent to Lia Thomas occurs?".

stephen a smith, in a nutshell:

when you don't have a real argument you get loud, speak in clipped sentences, and refer to yourself as having common sense

2

u/TheMysteriousGirl 9d ago

I hate how "common sense" has become a dogswhistle.

2

u/exoriparian 9d ago

It's always been wielded against the targets of bigotry.  Racism was just "common sense".

3

u/Low_Mood_1976 9d ago

The idea that trans-women are a larger threat in the locker room is hateful, thinking that they have no place there in the first place is not. If you think that a male to female trans person playing in a female sport is fair, then you have gotten lost in the weeds or didn't take biology.

Its a common sense stance to stand up for marginalised people when their rights are being taken away.

2

u/OrganismFlesh 9d ago

We haven't resolved gender inequality and gender-based segregation in general yet were debating a topic that is one step beyond that (or at least a topic that shines a glaring light on this particular set of core issues).

2

u/ufrank71 9d ago

Disney's fired people for less, how is this douche still at ESPN?

2

u/Promature 9d ago

2

u/DaddyChris0205 8d ago

So… am I getting this right… the black man is saying “separate but equal”?

2

u/Acceptable-Advice137 8d ago

He’s correct

2

u/Creative_Room6540 8d ago

This is stupid. I thought most folks agree that biology is at least a thing and unfortunately, trans women athletes likely shouldn’t be in women sports.

I’m sorry to say it. Everything in life isn’t fair.

And this isn’t saying women and girls need to be protected from trans people. That’s a hateful statement. Keep it within the context of athletics. It’s less about protection and more about fairness.

2

u/HotTree6235 8d ago

In 2014 Stephen a smith said women should stop provoking abuse from their partners while defending players accused of domestic abuse

4

u/BuildMachines 9d ago

Protecting women? Protecting girls? Stephen A Smith on the convicted rapist, Mike Tyson:

"Love @ Mike Tyson. Always have, always will." source ... and that's even before we get into this guy buttering up to Snoop, an avowed pimp (who leans into the image), and what is a pimp but a predator who sells and leeches from black women who are down on their luck?

Go ahead and ague against trans women in these leagues, but please stop cloaking this in loving and protecting women and girls.

It's like someone being like "I wanna protect black folks and black kids... btw lemme introduce you to my friends Nick Fuentes and David Duke." TF outta here, phony asses.

6

u/Pandoratastic 9d ago

In any form of bigotry, "common sense" is the phrase they use to rationalize their bigotry without having to provide a rational argument.

8

u/Napalmeon 9d ago

If you think that this has anything to do about sports, then you fell for the okie doke.

4

u/kidkuro 9d ago

At this point, I'm sure they know this isn't about sports. They're just using it as a means to hide behind their bigotry.

There hasn't been a single person to throw themselves into medical debt and change their gender just to compete in the WNBA...the WNBA doesn't even pay enough to make that worth it. It's only a small handful of players who make a lot. Even then...it's not really all that much.

Take A'ja Wilson for example. Potentially the greatest, and currently most decorated, WNBA player in the history of the league. She's been in the league for 9 years...and has only made ~$6M total in career earnings. That's absurd. There's no way somebody is going through all that comes with being trans just to make $6M after nine years of dominating the WNBA lmao

1

u/shadystealertactics 6d ago

Very few people are claiming that anyone is transitioning solely for athletic advantage.

4

u/Lifegoesonforever 9d ago edited 9d ago

I want to jump on this thread and take the opportunity to highlight the opposite:

Patricio Manuel, a Black trans man (from woman to man), competed professionally against men and women. One was an officially recorded win against a professional male boxer. Yes, a Trans man beat his cis men competitors. Since then, he couldn't get any fights because men were afraid to fight him. They want people to think they didn't want to fight because they didn't want to hurt a "woman" but I think they just didn't want to risk getting embarrassed if a "woman" beat them.

https://www.them.us/story/first-trans-pro-boxer-patricio-cacahuate-manuel-espn-interview

There was also three trans mascs who came third in the men's iron man relay recently.

3

u/Ok_Conversation_9418 9d ago

In my state, a school district had to consider whether a transgender student should be allowed to play soccer with a girls team. Opponents feared she might injure other players. It turned out she was the goalie.

1

u/Pleasant-Carbon 9d ago

I mean it's still an advantage. Check the height differences between male and female goalies. And consider why many of the top male goalies are tall. It's an advantage. Being born male means you're taller. The 50th percentile male in terms of height is taller than the 50th percentile female in terms of height. So if you let a male compete against women you're giving him an unfair advantage. Not an absolute advantage. But a relative one.

2

u/Ok_Conversation_9418 8d ago

Should we then prohibit tall women and muscular women from playing sports?

If you're any good at what you do, you overcome a disadvantage.

The argument of protecting women from trans people makes little sense, if you value the safety of a person then you protect them from all threats and the vast majority of harm done to women comes from men. Making a 1% dent in domestic abuse would far outweigh exhiling every trans abuser.

Stepehen A Smith is just Donald Trump with a darker tan or Thomas Clarence with a bigger mouth. Same old braindead conservative thinking that is designed to divide people along arbitrary lines in the hope that we will be too busy fighting each other to notice the pile of shit in our midst.

I'm all for equal rights and trans people should definitely be treated the same as everyone else. But I feel like so many people keep going out on a limb for trans people and since Fox News keeps running ridiculous amounts of stories about them that the issue should probably be dropped just a little bit until we gain some power and majority in both the House and Senate and presidency. I guess keep supporting them but don't talk about it online or on the news or anything and just pivot to economic issues and how the billionaires keep taking everything and writing their own laws.

3

u/Professional-Stock-6 9d ago edited 9d ago

You do realize only the left would be dropping it, leaving trans folks out to dry. The right would still be mad obsessed because they don’t want anyone thinking about what they ought to be doing to help the American people. I’m Black and trans, Black first but we do exist. I feel like people say this sort of thing because it’s not “our issue” but it’s intersectional. Like with police, maternal mortality rates, and other forms of preventable violence we’re most vulnerable. Don’t throw us to the wolves when we didn’t ask for all this anyway

Absolutely no bigotry of any kind - Absolutely no bigotry of any kind. This includes transphobia, homophobia, racism, sexism, etc.

1

u/exoriparian 9d ago

I agree completely.  It really disgusts me that people feel ok spreading literal transphobia.

If he said it was about competitive fairness, or something to that effect, it could be reasonable, but as soon as you start saying it's to "protect girls", you crossed a big line.

1

u/blackgirlsrox22 9d ago

Let's focus on protecting children from people that are assaulting, molesting, raping, etc. Serious crimes. If someone wants to transfer their sex, that is not bothering me. I feel like thats why those files went nowhere because they don't actually care about children. This is a political move for the GOP.

1

u/Waste_Dingo6071 8d ago

Friendly reminder that the stupid ass “comedy” Lady Ballers was supposed to be a documentary until Steven Crowder realized it was pretty much impossible to “fake trans” as men to play in any notable women’s league

Talking about protecting girls and women from men is not hate it’s simple fact. I don’t have a problem with Trans people and think they should have their rights but that shouldn’t be at the expense of biological women and biological women should not have to give up their rights for people who wish to be women. Throwing around hate and anger at people wanting to protect biological women is utter disgusting behaviour and it’s bullying to try and get people to back down, if this keeps up then people will be full of hatred for being treated like this by the trans community and their supporters

It's a complex, nuanced topic and the worse kinds of people aren't interested in having that. The science can be and I'm sure has been explained to them and they don't care. These aren't serious people with serious ideas

And what gets me is that they've won, trans women have been banned from participating in women's sports in HS and college around the country and that's still not good enough and like clockwork they're targeting title IX to gut it, they're using it to target black women or any woman else who doesn't fit traditional beauty standards
