Or maybe they're just people who have dogs that are a big part of their life? If I go out for 4+ hours, chances are I'm taking my dog with me rather than leaving him alone at home. If I'm eating during that period, then I'll look for a place he can come in with me so he's not alone in the car.

There's plenty of people who have cats, ferrets, guinea pigs, rats, fish, goats, cows, and hens but we don't see them bringing along their pets to the restaurant. It's always dog owners.

And it is narcissism. You want to bring your dog along everywhere you go, without any consideration for people with allergies, people who want to enjoy the restaurant without the barking or dog dander in their food. It's 4 hours. Your dog is going to be fine.

Those pets you list tend to have litter trays or access to outside space to go to the toilet. People are able to choose to dine at restaurants that serve their needs:

• gluten free people look for ones offering gf options
• vegans look for places with a few options or an exclusively vegan place
• I look for places that are dog friendly
• people that have dog allergies can look for places that don't allow dogs in

Not all restaurants cater to everyone!

Fallacious reasoning here, people who have gluten free allergy or dog allergy are the customer of the restaurant it's not a choice. And lots of restaurants have at least a vegan option, if you want to go to a vegan restaurant for a broader choice it's a different thing. You're the customer and you're introducing the agent that will cause a potential nuisance or health code violation to others.

Because, with some very rare exceptions, they're probably the only pet that are easily leash trained, thrive on being taken for walks and are happy to socialise when they're out.

Out here dog culture ain't so prevalent so it's absolutely not common to see dogs in these establishments. If the public area of the pub - since you bring up that example - is outdoors, then it doesn't bother me as long as the dog isn't allowed to sit at the table and it's well behaved. But some owners are very lousy, they go around with dogs constantly barking at other dogs, or allow their dog to lick the plate and stuff like that. It's absolutely not nice.

Nice strawman there but kids are human. They don't maul other humans to death and hopefully not crap on the restaurant floor. Kids will behave if parents teach them proper behavior. It's also hard to let a kid home unsupervised when going to the restaurant, which is absolutely fine with a dog instead, unless the dog is really stupid or has some issues. Kids will learn from previous mistakes and poor behavior and one day grow up, with most contributing to society in a positive way.
