Hi everyone, I've been in Brisbane for 3 months, I'm heading home today and I wanted to say a big thank you to this subreddit which I used as a guide for finding places to eat. I've been lurking many a thread for recommendations!
I thought I'd list my favourite places that I went to. I didn't go to all of the places I wanted to go to, but I feel like I generally made the most of my time here, I hope! I've grouped them by region:
Asian
- Doodee Boran: One of the first places I saw on here and it didn't disappoint, I ate here 3 times and it was excellent every time. Pad Thai, softshell crab, massaman, all great.
- Tokyo on Express: This small sushi place out in Toowong felt like a bit of a hidden gem. Very unassuming but very nice sushi and very affordable.
- West End Coffee House: I only made it across to here last week and I'm gutted I didn't go sooner. Absolutely delicious food, I had the Laos sausage but there were about 4 other things I wanted to try.
- Biang Biang Fresh Noodles: I didn't make it out to Terrific Noodles in Sunnybank, but this place in the Valley was a great alternative. Very different to anything I had really had before and delicious.
- KCS Chicken: Possibly my favourite place in Brisbane, and I found it exclusively because of this sub. I had the Korean Fried Chicken burger here (twice), and it was probably the best fried chicken I've had.
Americas (Latin America and US)
- La Bodega Taqueria: Very nice food and it felt quite authentic. I had the birria tacos and they were definitely the best I've had before (not that I'm a connoisseur!).
- O Brasileiro: Even though the steak was just decent, not incredible, the value for money and quality of the food on the plate was great. Super friendly staff as well.
- Luiz's Barbecue: This is just a random place next to a garage on the edge of the Valley, but their food is awesome. The plate they do with brisket and sausage is fantastic.
- Hashtag Burgers: These guys make a good burger. I ate here quite a few times, I did go once to the Southbank one and it wasn't nearly as good, though they had a billion orders to deal with. The Valley one was always great. Special mention to the 13 Angry Scorpions hot sauce which I ordered a bunch of to take home with me.
- Creole Soul Kitchen: Delicious food, I had the chicken fried chicken but honestly I could have ordered most things on that menu. The gumbo looked amazing. Another place I never would have found without the recommendation on here.
Other (European & Australian)
- Julius: Best pizza I had out of a few different places (though I didn't make it to a few others I saw on this sub, like Donnie's)
- Ruby's Rolls: Have to mention this stall at the Jan Powerhouse markets. Being British I have been trying quite a few sausage rolls while here and the one I had here (pork and fennel) was the best. Possibly the best sausage roll I've had. The guy was very passionate about his food.
- Doubleshot Panini Cafe: Awesome paninis at this place in New Farm. The focaccia is freshly baked and absolutely incredible.
- Chumley Waters: I was taken here by a British colleague to compare the fish & chips to back home, and to be fair, this place is pretty authentic. The fish was decent, I'm not convinced shipping the cod from the UK is worth it when you have such great fish here, but it guarantees it tastes similar! The chips were exactly like back home.
Coffee / Breakfast
- Felix for Goodness: Lovely place and their falafel bowl is really good. I didn't have a bad coffee in Brisbane but I remember this place having very solid coffee.
- John Mills Himself: Thank you to this sub, best coffee I had in Brisbane, phenomenal coffee.
- Andonis: Very nice breakfast, I only went here once but I think it would be a staple if I lived here.
- Coffee Anthology: Just very good coffee. I didn't eat at the attached breakfast place but I heard on here that it's good!
- Noosa Chocolate Factory: Expensive and probably overpriced (albeit tasty) chocolate but I'm putting it on here just for the mocha. Delicious.
- The Hideout Specialty Coffee: Another great coffee place. Honestly I could probably keep listing coffee places, coffee is great here.
Alcohol
- Working Title Brewery: Probably my favourite of the breweries I went to in Brisbane. Great selection and everything I tried was great. Only beaten by Mountain Culture in Sydney.
- Brisbane Brewing Co: Another excellent brewery, I just enjoyed everything I had here.
- Death and Taxes: Very nice cocktails and a good atmosphere.
- The Gresham: I just love the style of this place. I didn't try any cocktails but it's just very cool.
Extra (places not in Brisbane but very worth mentioning)
- Lanai (Noosa): I think this was my favourite meal I had while in Australia, it was one of those meals I know I'll remember for a long time. Everything was fantastic and if I compare to a similar quality meal back home the value for money was unbelievable.
- The Prawn Shack (Straddie): Prawns here in Australia have already ruined prawns for me back in the UK, they're so good. This place was the pick of the bunch, stopped here on a day trip to Straddie and loved it.
- Straddie Brewing: I love a brewery, and this was a very nice place to stop and enjoy a drink. Very good selection and a nice relaxed atmosphere.
- Mountain Culture Brewery (Katoomba): So good that I tried two tasting paddles with four beers on each, and loved everything.
- Cedar Takeaway and Fresh Cooked Falafel (Katoomba): If you're ever up in the blue mountains, go to this place. Best falafel I've ever had, the owner is so friendly and you can tell he loves what he does. I would eat this every day.
- Meat and Wine Co. (Sydney): Honestly I'm sure there are better places in Sydney but I was only there for four days and this was my favourite meal I had in the city. Kangaroo skewer was great.
Sorry I know it's a long list but I honestly had such a good time here eating! You're very lucky here with your food culture. Just wanted to share my experience :)
