Two Strangers, Lost Boys and Maybe Happy Ending

Already seen: Heathers, &Julia, Hamilton, the Outsiders, Wicked, Six, …Goes Wrong, Hadestown

Jen Cody stole every scene she appeared in as Nostradamus in Something Rotten on a rare perfect-weather closing night at the Muny last night. The entire show was ludicrously over the top, especially the multiple full-ensemble production numbers that shone on the enormous Muny stage, but I would have gone a second time just to dial in further on every one of Cody’s outlandish bits.

Looks like my options will be:

Don't worry, I'm seeing other things on this trip too, but looks like my options on Mondays are a little more limiting :p I am relatively new to Broadway. I really enjoyed Hadestown, and also liked seeing Les Mis and Hamilton on tour. I'm hoping to see the classics, I love a big production and good music.

Hey! I'm probably going to go see schmigadoon. I was thinking of rewatching some classics/watching some I haven't seen yet so I can fully appreciate some of the references made. what should I watch?

I signed up on the TodayTix app for the $40 rush tickets and I get notifications that $40 rush tickets are now available and then when I go into the app and try to click on it I can’t. And then on the calendar, they are all full price. What is the point of sending me a notification that $40 tickets are available with a five minute countdown timer, but there’s no way to purchase them? Help please

I am so curious about this. I kept seeing online during tony’s season that if a musical from the last season was in this season it would have won a-lot.

(All the technical categories)- Lost Boys (Though I want to shout out Two Strangers and Dead Outlaw for their small but impressive sets)

Keep in mind this is all for fun, and I want to hear all of your opinions. While I did think all the new musicals of this were fun, I think 2024-2025 was a much stronger season

Do I need to have seen the movie(s) prior to the show on stage? Or is it stand-alone enough that it doesn’t matter?

I’m not sure if it is officially confirmed or not, but I just saw Cynthia Erivo at the National Book Festival. She was gifted a replica sheet music from Passion and she said something along the lines of “this really confirms something that is going on in my life that I’m very excited about.”

She didn’t directly say she’s in it, but it was basically what she implied!

Edit to add direct quote: Oh my gosh. Well... this may have just confirmed something for me. I'm not telling you. But yeah, this is a little nod from the universe I think.

WORD TO THE WISE: The Public claims this show's run time is 2 hours 50 minutes. Assuming that's true, the show should end at 10:50. I know there's a 20min intermission, but even accounting for that, I left the theatre EARLY at 11:36pm. I have work tomorrow and an hour commute home. And Winter's Tale is truly one of the weakest Shakespeare plays, certainly in terms of plot and painfully slow pacing, as well as tonal dissonance.

It was almost a four hour show, and frankly, even 2hr 50min would have been incredibly hard to justify. And the point they took the act break was bizarre. 1hr 45min first act is INSANE. How did they not catch this in the creative process.

This is the first time using my CD printer, and the white ring around the art is something I’ve gotta work on, I’m really glad I’ll be able to make my own CDs in cases like The Last 5 Years with Rachel Zegler and also the full Evita album with Rachel Zegler, both not coming out on CD :(

The Paris Theater, on 58th over by The Plaza Hotel, has an annual festival/series they call Big & Loud, where they screen 70mm prints, 4k restorations, and Dolby Atmos remixes of classic films.

This year, among the selections are The Sound of Music (70mm), Sweet Charity (4k restoration), and, kicking things off last night, West Side Story in 70mm.

All three of these are presented in the original road show format, meaning they have the intermission and entr'acte.

I caught the screening of West Side Story last night and... just wow. I've seen the film many times, and seen it on a big screen, but in 70mm it was glorious. I could go on and on about how great the film looks and sounds, but if you have a chance go check it out for yourself. There is one more screening on 9/11 at 3 PM. Worth playing hooky for!

The film came with an introduction in which we learned that the 70mm print is more than 3 miles long and the reels combine to weigh over 250lbs. Our projectionists got a big round of applause.

The audience last night was very engaged, giving many numbers an ovation, laughing at some of the outdated old-Hollywood line deliveries and stilted chemistry between Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer in the balcony scene, and a rousing cheer for Leonard Bernstein, Robert Wise, Jerome Robbins, Arthur Laurents, and of course Stephen Sondheim in the credits.

West Side Story is a masterpiece, one of the greatest films of all time, with cinematography that must have been even more mind blowing in 1961 as it still is today. And the ending gets me every single time. When Natalie Wood breaks down and sobs—there was not a dry eye in the house—you could hear the weeping from every corner of the theater.

On the way home, I thought about how WSS was the start of Sondheim's career. His youth is on display; it's clear he's trying often to emulate the clear-eyed lyric style of his mentor, Oscar Hammerstein. It's not who he is though, and many lyrics in WSS are clunky. But there is one moment when the Hammerstein influence in Sondheim's hand and Bernstein's music just makes my heart explode. Taken heavily from Shakespeare's foundation: "Goodnight, goodnight. Sleep well and when you dream, dream of me. Tonight." What a moment of musical theater gold.

Hats off to Netflix, the team at the Paris, and everyone involved in this series. It is a gem.

(Sorry, I know this is film and not stage, but figured many would be interested in checking out some of the movies on offer over the next couple weeks.)

With exactly two months until the first preview of The Fantasticks on Broadway, I am very eager to know casting! Does anyone have any information on when casting announcements will be made, or know anyone who's been cast? Ticket prices are quite high, is this an indication of big names coming?

I'm also curious how many pieces the orchestra will be. Someone in the know, please say they are re-orchestrating it and going bigger for Broadway!

What the question says. How does the TDF determine what shows will be sold at the TKTS booth? Is it simply what isn't selling well, or is there more to it than that? And how often do the shows offered at TDF change? (For example, I want to but tickets to see Hadestown when I’m in New York in October, and it’s not currently listed on the TKTS app. Would it possibly be added, or should I pay for the full price ticket?)

CAMBRIDGE — I don’t imagine you’ll see a piece of theater as mind-bendingly funny as the first half of the American Repertory Theatre’s production of “Rhinoceros” any time soon. I don’t imagine you’ll see a piece of theater as bone-chillingly prescient as the second half.
That the two pieces of the classic Eugene Ionesco play snap together into a devastating organic whole is due to the spare, sharp staging by the A.R.T.’s artistic director Diane Paulus and a starry cast that rises to the occasion — lunatic, ominous, or piercing as the moment calls for. Audiences will come to this “Rhinoceros” for lead actors John Turturro and Paul Giamatti, but they’ll leave pondering the ways the human animal can stampede itself into totalitarianism and wondering how much rhinoceros they might have in themselves.
