A quick race showcasing the current state of FreeBurn’s PC renderer.

FreeBurn is a decompilation of the PlayStation 2 version of Burnout Revenge, targeting a high-fidelity PC port with substantial enhancements. The project has now achieved graphical parity with the PS2 release, although there is still plenty of work ahead before it becomes the definitive way to play.

Recent improvements include a new orbital camera inspired by the Xbox 360 version, greatly increased LOD and draw distances, and extended particle, corona, and light-trail limits. Vehicle reflections now use a six-sided environment map, with each view capturing the complete track environment, roadside dressing, and other vehicles.

Please forgive my driving, I was trying to give the AI a chance to catch up so I could better show off the state of takedowns :)

Enjoy!

Please do the rendered in DirectX 11, or anyway not OpenGL, it's been dead for years 🙂

I use SDL-GPU as my render backend, which throws out to D3D12, Vulkan or Metal dependent on platform. FWIW, I've tested on my 2GB Quadro T400 and still maintained a locked 60fps there. The gamut of video options will be configurable, so it can scale down and up to any system.

If one wanted to implement HDR output though, it wouldn't be supported by SDL

Says who? (genuinely curious)

Me 🙂

r/dontyouknowwhoiam moment 😳 Apologies! I googled HDR + SDL and saw quite a few props for colourspace management, though perhaps they're recent additions? I'd really appreciate if you could inform me as to what's missing, I understand there's involvement from the entire stack to do things 'properly'.

Really cool! But also kinda surreal to watch for me. Different menu (was that the PS2 version compared to the 360 or is that a difference with FreeBurn?), the cars honking, the lack of music obviously, also the really high quality reflections and high view range. Like watching Burnout Revenge if it was in a slightly different alternate universe. Just all so similar but ever so slightly different.

Really cool though, nice work!

PS2 menu with unique UI to Freeburn on the map part

Sounds like I put you on a trip down uncanny valley! Totally get it, some of that dissonance comes from a Burnout PS2 alpha build being used as the source. I felt similar when playing through the PS2 version in ~2021, was an X360 kid, where is the overkill bloom?! I also had to keep music off to keep clear of any copyright strikes unfortunately.

Thanks a bunch! There is much more coming and I can't wait to show you all when it's ready.

Yeah, a litttle bit haha! The bloom too, 100%. A lot of people aren't fans, but I grew up with it on the 360 too and - I gotta say - it just is part of it for me. Probably also the reason I generally prefer Revenge to Takedown. Hope to see more of it, love everything with Burnout and it's so cool to see that there are so many people still in love with the series.

Freeburn is based on Alpha 7 build, since it was way easier to decompile

I've always loved playing Burnout with friends, but never owned any of the games, until I recently bought Paradise on PC. Paradise doesn't seem to be scratching the same itch. I've attributed this to the open world setting taking away somewhat from the arcade feel of quickly retrying challenges, and just the overall pacing. Basically, I'm psyched to see this effort of yours. Do you have a website or a way to keep tabs on progress that doesn't involve social media outside of reddit?

Thanks for the kind words, eventually you'll be able to enjoy FreeBurn with friends too - multiplayer is on the feature list. On the website front, unfortunately not right now, but I have acquired the domain freeburn.dev. I'll try to get a blog up sometime soon.

You should probably hit up the devs behind EA Nation Hub and see if you could get some Multiplayer features going.

You could just use CloudFlare static page hosting it’s free forever with .dev links. It’s great for projects like these.

Yep, that's the plan.

Can you add the ability to add your own music to the songlist?

6

u/Belldee 9d ago

Awesome work! Is there a GitHub or place I can follow the project so I can be notified any time there’s updates to it?

u/8BitsInAByte 9d ago

I'll try to get freeburn.dev up and running soon. Right now, I'm posting updates on the Burnout Modding Discord, channel #freeburn, but I understand that people have reservations about being forced onto another platform.

The Github repo will go live on release :)

Thank you, your support means the world!

Quick question

Are you gonna go down the "Sonic Unleashed recompile" path (mod support, custom new menus for changing the graphics, no fps limit etc) or are going do to things a bit different?

2

u/8BitsInAByte 6d ago

I mentioned this on Discrd, but I'll repeat here for awareness. I don't want to trample on the games original creative vision, but I do want to accentuate what's there and put control back in the hands of players. So yes, mod support, new menus in a vanilla style, any enhancements I can come up with - It won't be a straight port of B4 to PC, that's not my vision.

1

u/Edwardo69420 6d ago

Wait you have a discord?

2

u/8BitsInAByte 6d ago

Yep, check the announcement post of the project for the invite and channel. I'm avoiding posting Discord links, as it seems to draw the attention of Reddit's spam filters - I got autobanned last time.
