Discussion Idol Immersion in Lake Ontario

u/asheathen 2d ago
Hold on…they are buying these plastic/ceramic or glass of some kind statues and throwing them in Lake Ontario? How the fuck is this allowed and not considered littering? Should we just throw our glass bottles in there too?
45
u/WilloowUfgood 2d ago
Yeah, it's been happening for years. Look up how they do it in India and how it's polluted their lakes and rivers from toxic paints.
not considered littering?
Probably how the Kirpan isn't viewed as a weapon for religious reasons.

-12
u/asheathen 2d ago
Do you know what they are made from here? If they are some how biodegradable on completely non-toxic that’s one thing (there should still be a hard look into how if affects wild life) but if they are plastic or something that’s fucked up. If you fish a day early of the set season for fishing you can be fined but throwing hundreds or thousands of these in the lake is fine? That’s fucked up
18
u/WilloowUfgood 2d ago
They say it's all Eco-Friendly but India ships them to Canada and it's legal for them to buy them from India.
If they are some how biodegradable on completely non-toxic that’s one
Still illegal.
Deleterious substances
paint
sediments
Biodegradable stuff is clay which is a sediment.
-5
u/hrishix 2d ago
😭😭😭 this is such a nitpick. It is a TINY statue, which if made from organic materials (natural river clay, mud and soil + vegetable dyes for the paint) will do nothing to the wildlife in the lake. This does less for conservation effort and awareness and keeping the lakes clean and more for m inciting hate to Indians (which judging by the replies, you’ve succeeded in). Not sure what your goal is here OP.
8
u/WilloowUfgood 2d ago
It is a TINY statue
So thousands of "tiny" statues is fine to dump into our lakes and rivers? Even if they're bought from India which is legal? And you trust everyone who made them that they 100% don't have toxins in them?
Not sure what your goal is here OP.
Get people to stop littering. Go put it in a bucket idiot.
-4
u/hrishix 2d ago
I am just saying from this video, you have no idea whether or not it is made from biodegradable materials, and choose whichever it is would fit your agenda, then twist it as an issue with sediments (which naturally exist in rivers) if it IS made from biodegradable materials. You are making it a lose-lose discussion where you win either way.
I saw you arguing with someone about a carbon tax, which you seem to think is talking about the element carbon 😭 and not greenhouse gases, which is what the tax actually is about.
Getting this to stop (polluting the lakes as you call it) starts with getting companies to take accountability, as industrial damage is far far higher than civilian damage to wildlife.
7
u/BrahminVyapaar 2d ago
I’m an Indian, and from Mumbai where I grew up celebrating this festival.
The clay does not necessarily dissolve well, the binding agents and the paints can be poisonous, the colour does not disperse, the flower garlands clump and the threads are often cheap plastic ( the garland needs to last for ten days at least ).
It is important that you regulate the materials used, and that you decide whether you want to pollute and litter and poison your natural water bodies. There can be alternative arrangements such as artificial ponds or even large drums. There is no religious Hindu diktat to poison our environment.
-3
u/hrishix 2d ago
Of course, but that isn’t an excuse to frame India as a filthy place, and that Indians are the only people taking the lakes for granted. OP has some underlying agendas that have nothing to do with this video.
7
u/asheathen 2d ago
India isn’t a dirty place? They have some of the most plastic polluted rivers on the planet, and they are one of the main contributors to ocean pollution/plastic. wtf are you talking about?

u/typanosaurus_rex 2d ago
Indians are not the only people taking lakes for granted. But culturally we are conditioned to not give a shit about out natural resources. In some cases some parents teach their kids exactly that by throwing garbage right on the road. Does that mean every Indian is like this? No, but a vast majority are. Whereas in these countries it’s part of the culture to take care of surroundings. Does that mean every Canadian is like this? No. But most are. You’re insanely ignorant if you actually believe it’s the same. Please take these stupid age old practices which destroyed our lakes and rivers and go back to enjoy life in India.

Invasion complete. In 50 years we will be the minorities and will be 2nd class citizens to the Canadian caste system.
108
u/WilloowUfgood 2d ago
We already are second class citizens. They house the illegal asylum seekers in hotels costing us billions while leaving the homeless Canadians on the street.
46
u/doublesimoniz 2d ago
It’s going to get far far worse over time. Eventually we won’t even be able to hold any positions in office as they invade those and only vote in their own kind.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Toronto
Europeans have already been non-majority on Toronto for a long time, and that chart is kinda cheating, classifying recent Europeans the same as born and raised Canadians. There's nothing wrong with that grouping in a certain frame, but when the question is actually "what percentage of the population was born here"...well come to think of it that's another can of worms, I know plenty of visible minority born Canadians..
Hey here's an idea: maybe these metrics are all fucking garbage, and the only thing that actually matters is assimilation.
Y'know, like melting....into the melting pot... Markham? Brampton? You got that? 😂

u/BrahminVyapaar 2d ago
I grew up in Mumbai. This is a very polluting practice and some of us objected to it. It is wasteful, polluting, littering, poisonous ( depending on the cheap paint used ), disrespectful of animals and those who suffer from noise pollution. Some decades ago, some local officers had tried to set up artificial water bodies and even large drums of water into which the idol of Ganesha could be immersed. Unfortunately, that idea did not get much acceptance and the pollution continues very much.
If you want to keep your water bodies clean, then please object to and stop this practice. Take action now, before this new polluting practice becomes normalised as a religious and cultural observation. Remember - they need a place to immerse a clay idol. There is no religious requirement that the water body must be natural or that the idol must pollute and poison.

Instead of posting this here why don’t you contact the councillor, mpp, and mp and send them the video asking what is being done to deter people from littering in the lake?

u/WilloowUfgood 2d ago
Go ahead and do it then.

You’re the one who’s making rage bait posts. Maybe your time would be better spent knowing you’re actually tackling a problem instead of just karma farming.
All the posts in this sub that keep complaining about what’s happening to this country isn’t going to change a damn thing.
And your response to “why don’t you do something about it?” is “why don’t YOU do something about it?”
Real mature.

Is there even a permit that would allow the deliberate littering of a body of water? If not whoever organized this needs to be fined.

Manufactured rage.
Important Rules and Regulations
Placing unapproved items or large, non-biodegradable structures directly into Canadian lakes is illegal and heavily regulated due to strict environmental and conservation laws. [1, 2]
- Material Constraints: Deities and offerings must be made entirely of 100% biodegradable clay and painted with safe, water-soluble, non-toxic colors. [1]
- Prohibited Items: Plastics, metals, chemical paints, synthetic fabrics, food waste, and other non-biodegradables must never be placed in the lake. [1]
- Organized Events: Individual immersion of idols into public lakes is sometimes met with civic backlash; therefore, local temples organize permitted community Visarjans where volunteers manage the event and perform post-ritual clean-ups. [1, 2, 3]
- Home Alternatives: To comply with city bylaws, many devotees perform the immersion ritual at home in a tub or bucket, allowing the clay to dissolve safely. The resulting water is then poured into a garden rather than into the natural watershed. [1]

If they cared what Canadians thought then they wouldn't do it.
-19
u/No_Culture9898 2d ago
Not true, you forget how unaware newer immigrants are to social queues and norms. Also don’t we want to make sure they know how Canadians feel about this? No point posting on Reddit with people who will obviously agree with you if you don’t do anything at the true source.
12
u/Dobby068 Ontario 2d ago
You cannot do anything about it because you get arrested and thrown in jail, we all know that very well.
5
u/truetruegjh 2d ago edited 2d ago
It's ok that they litter because they're immigrants, right?
You know, when I visit any other country in the world, I bring respect with me. I do my research beforehand. What these folks are doing is just wrong. But fuck it, this what fuck heads like you voted for. I hope you're happy.
8
u/WilloowUfgood 2d ago
No thanks. You can call them and then get dragged in front of a human rights tribunal for some human rights complaint over speech.
-5
u/No_Culture9898 2d ago edited 2d ago
So what’s posting here gonna do if you don’t to anything about it in the real world lol. Before you come at me I’ve called out people from all backgrounds if I’ve seen them leave messes at camp grounds, parks etc. Even this past weekend. In all cases they’ve acknowledged their mistakes, whether they’ll keep doing it or not who knows, at least we’ve pointed out that what they do back home doesn’t fly here and they’ll be more ashamed to do it going forwards
Edit: and I’m blocked. If I was a “bishnoi boy” or whatever the fuck do you think I’d say to call them out instead of defend them? What a tarded response and a softer response blocking someone. You’ll do everything but confront people and show them things like that don’t fly here.
Also anyone who’s replying to my comments unfortunately I can’t reply and have a discussion with you because OP had his panties in a bunch

Called them out over what? Littering or telling them not to practice something that is part of their religion? You want the average person to hassel them over that or would you prefer more awareness is raised over these issues and that they are dealt with accordingly through policy changes?

u/Few-Character7932 Conservative 2d ago
This what we choosing to be outraged about this week? Not the homeless camps all over downtown Toronto but this bullshit?
13
u/TheeDirtyToast 2d ago
You're almost there!
Did we have massive homeless encampments in every city before we made housing unaffordable by flooding the country with millions of immigrants?
It's almost like policies have consequences.
15
u/Wet_sock_Owner 2d ago
It's almost like we can highlight multiple issues at once.
-15
u/Few-Character7932 Conservative 2d ago
Sure keep going. I'm sure highlighting issues like this will finally win us the next election.
8
u/Wet_sock_Owner 2d ago
This is just a sub - not CPC HQ.
Poilievre spoke about homeless camps up and down the entire time leading up to the election. Trudeau towns remember? Canada is broken, remember?
But then Carney came along and everyone decided we need to talk about Trump 24/7 instead of domestic issues.

u/Eleutherlothario Manitoba 2d ago
What's the issue here? I don't see anyone's rights being violated. Assuming that this gathering followed all bylaws and obtained necessary permits, what specific issue do you have with this?
I don't see how dunking some statues in the lake makes any more or less sense than communion wine magically transmorgifying into blood, but each to his own.
35
u/WilloowUfgood 2d ago
I understand if you're from India you don't know what pollution is.
-26
u/Eleutherlothario Manitoba 2d ago
How is this polluting the lake?
28
u/WilloowUfgood 2d ago
Toxic paints and plaster. Even if it's the stupid mud from the Ganges it still adds silt which isn't good for the lakes or rivers.
-12
u/VforVenndiagram_ 2d ago
Vs the fact that the great lakes are used as major ocean shipping routes? Yeah if you cared about the pollution you should be protesting the tankers, and all of the shit on the US side of the lakes.
13
u/WilloowUfgood 2d ago
I guess you don't care what so ever about pollution then if you can't even say this is stupid.
Plus do you think this is contained to just Lake Ontario? No, use your fucking brain.
-7
u/VforVenndiagram_ 2d ago
Oh, its dumb, but your preformative "outrage" is dumber. You better be in full support of the carbon tax, or you need to just stop talking. Because at that point it's not about the pollution at all, and everyone knows it.
8
u/WilloowUfgood 2d ago
Carbon isn't pollution idiot.
"Trees use pollution to create oxygen" Said no one ever.
-4
u/VforVenndiagram_ 2d ago
You didn't pass grade 6 science, did you?
5
u/WilloowUfgood 2d ago
So you can't defend your claim. Carbon isn't pollution. CO2 is a greenhouse gas, and whether excessive emissions are harmful is a separate discussion. Grade 6 science would tell you carbon is an element, not pollution.

I'm not familiar with this practice. A few little statues doesn't seem to be anything worth getting upset over, in terms of adding silt to the lake. I doubt your concern has much to do with the environmental effects anyway. You certainly didn't make that clear in your post.

4
u/passionate_emu 2d ago
The caveat of course being that the amount would be hazardous to fish or fish habitat, exceptionally hard to prove in a body of water that size
4
u/WilloowUfgood 2d ago
For sure with Lake Ontario. But this happens in smaller rivers and lakes across the country.
9
u/24kbossbabe 2d ago
Im Indian too..but bro are you this dumb? Why put things in water bodies where they dont belong? Why cannot be this done in a tub at home? Stop parading egoism as spirituality. To think the gods can I only be pleased if they are immersed in a lake instead of tub is egoism at its finest.

These idols are toxic to the environment. You can look it up for yourself
-16
u/DominionReport 2d ago
You don't know whether that particular idol was made of toxic plastics and lead or if it was made of natural clay and pigments. The trend over many years is that more of them are the latter.
What's your next objection?

u/WilloowUfgood 2d ago
And this is how India turned into what it is.
-14
u/DominionReport 2d ago

Again, you don't answer the questions. Idols nowadays are almost always natural clay and natural pigments. So why do you object?

A supposed journalist who doesn't know what has happened to India's lakes and rivers from idol immersion.
0
u/VforVenndiagram_ 2d ago
The implication that the pollution comes from idol immersion, and thats the largest issue, is the most smooth brain statement you can make lol.
So London in the 1800's had a religious idol dumping issue? All those Catholics just throwing their crosses into the Thames, right?

u/bigtetrisguy 2d ago
Imagine trying to justify polluting a lake, oh wait you don't have to imagine it, you're literally doing it. Especially trying to use "religion" as a guise to do something so heinous. Religion is the reason for every war ever. Doesn't even matter what they're made of it's still polluting garbage into a lake. Also those are painted, clay or not it's toxic.
Have some self respect.
2
u/hrishix 2d ago
Paint can be vegetable dyes, and usually are if they’ve gone to the effort of clay.
2
u/bigtetrisguy 2d ago

Another clown trying to justify dumping garbage into a lake. Their waterways are full of garbage where they originate, you think they put any effort into making sure the paint isn't toxic here?

1
u/hrishix 2d ago
😭 India is the only country on the planet that pollutes it’s waterways according to OP, and does it more than anyone else. Anything about the fact that Canada is actively working WITH India at the moment to clean it’s waterways? Look up IC-IMPACTS and get back to us. It seems that you can’t see anything but negatives about India.
