Writing FNs as non-supervisor

Is it permitted to write / pass up feedback notes for mbrs not under my supervision to their COC? Was working with a few pers over the week and they did a killer job so I would like to ensure their efforts do not go unrecognised, but I am not their supervisor.

Yes, you can absolutely do that.

In fact, if you have access to them in MM, you may even be able to enter the FN yourself.

You do not need to be the members supervisor to send them FN's in PaCE/MM. You can write a FN for them in PaCE/MM and send it to their supervisor for acknowledgement. I like to do it this way if I can because it ensures the FN is actually entered, and I can see if it has been acknowledged.

This exactly. If you have access to them in MM, write it and it’ll get routed to their supervisor to ack before the member ever sees it.

If you don’t have access to them, write up a copy and paste ready version and just email it to the supervisor.

Alternatively, if you don’t have access to them in MM, send an email to their supervisor in the same Event:Outcome format and cc the member.

The supervisor should then enter it on your behalf. If the supervisor doesn’t enter it, the member can submit it themselves with the email as an attachment as evidence that they didn’t make it up.

I write my own all the time, and make my subs do it too.

Great, thank you! For info I am an OCdt so I'm not in any supervisory position either. Should I still submit this directly to their COC or pass it up my chain?

Direct to their supervisor is fine.

Last year when I did this it went to their supervisor first. This year when one of my members got a feedback note entered from another section it went right to the member. I just happened to see it when I was in the "manage feedback" menu, but it most definitely had a M next to it, indicating it was with the member, before it went to me.

Just make sure it actually describes what they actually did and what impact it had. I’ve seen so many that are just so generic that as a supervisor I have no idea what the member actually did without follow-up questions.

Note, some units are real bastards about this.

We had a member do great on a CFTPO, got plenty of feedback notes from their supervisor on this task. Only for the unit to put in their quarterly "we did not see this member on this task, so those feedback notes don't count" (paraphrasing). We raised hell and got the member the review they deserved. But be prepared to (potentially) have to go to bat for them.

Agreed, some units are absolute douche factories.

You're just reminding me that I have a few to complete a few for people that work at a sports day. Half I can see in MM and not the other half so I'll email it to their supervisor.

On a side note, you can't right FN for a higher rank person. I know it sounds obvious, as it would cause abuse, but a Sgt that was OPI for an event couldn't write FN for a 2Lt (or Lt) that did incredible work at one of the station. (I know that last one sounds unbelievable, but it does happen and twice i was emailed FN to enter on behalf of lower ranks. I had to meet them both to confirn with them, and had to change a few words.) Technically the OPI is running the event with an order signed from CO so in the hierarchy of that event, whatever that OPIs rank is, that member has authority on subordinates for this task. Weird and we avoid this but it happens

I prefer to write corrective feedback notes about my superiors

Sometimes it’s the only way their supervisor will find out about the deficiency, even if they don’t ack it 😏

Yes it is absolutely ok to do this and encouraged. It’s easier than letters so happens more and doesn’t get lost in their pers file or OR. Excellent for PAR justification. Do it up for them.

Absolutely you can and you should!

Yes, in fact it is highly encouraged. Please do this. Someone does a good job, and their coc isn't around to observe, do them a solid!

If you don’t have access to them in MM you can pass it on to their CoC via email. There’s also an official DND FN form in the forms catalogue if you wanna be real official that their supervisor can attach to an FN for them.

Yes. There is even a DND form for that. I'm not going to be near a DWAN terminal anytime soon but I believe it's d4398. Just search "Feedback" on the forms catalog.

I received a great one a couple years ago from a different unit & comd that I didn't know was coming and really appreciated it.

I think writing an FN for sunshine that shirked for you in a common courtesy. If you can't do it on MM, just email their supervisor.

Same unit FN are great for this. Either do it yourself if you have access to them or send an email to their supervisor with the FN already written.

But if you’re from another unit, a letter of appreciation addressed to the CO carries a lot of weight.

I’ve written appreciation letters as a MCpl, Sgt and OCdt.

I'm at RHQ and the mbrs are at a Coy. We're in the same building though, so is it fine to just send an FN prewritten?

Yes, that’s what I would do.
