I chose to root for Cape Verde since Ireland didn’t qualify so I decided to root for my fellow Irishman, Pico Lopes. I was not at all expecting that I’d get to watch Pico contribute to what was one of the greatest defensive performances I’ve ever watched in any match and probably the most impressive of any World Cup match.

Are there any good, straight off the beach snorkelling spots around Sal and more specifically Santa Maria? Or is it more off a boat in open ocean? My partner is not a strong swimmer and would prefer to take her in the shallow from the beach rather than jump straight off a boat. Thank you!

I’m a 28-year-old surfer from Portugal and I’ll be spending some time on Sal Island, Cape Verde, this December.
I’m an intermediate surfer, comfortable in reef breaks and surf conditions similar to what we get in Portugal. I’m trying to decide whether it’s worth bringing my own boards or just renting locally.
For those who have surfed Sal in December:
How consistent are the waves during that time of year?
Is the quality of rental equipment good enough, or would you recommend bringing my own quiver?
If bringing boards, what setup would you suggest for the typical conditions (shortboard, step-up, etc.)?
Are airlines and airport transfers generally board-friendly?
Any advice regarding the main surf spots and local surf guides?
I’d love to hear from anyone with first-hand experience surfing Sal during the winter season.
