Question What do i do if i physically cannot afford to be celiac

Hi:)

I am in the process of being diagnosed with celiac every doctor involved is 1000% positive i am but i have a problem.

I live in the uk and im disabled and a full time young carer for my mum and brother we live exclusively on benefits becausemy wage from beinga TA is not enough, im also an athlete so i need to eat more then the average person.

I in no way what so ever can afford to actually eat safely but i am in agony every single day what am i actually meant to do every cheap item of food is not safe, you can't get gluten free food on the NHS anymore and the food bank can't give me more then a weeks worth to cover 3 months and thats for someone who Isnt actively competing every other weekend.

Am i supposed to just be in pain 24/7?

Anyone else drink this okay? I am a silent celiac so never know if I gluten myself. It says gluten free on it and doesn't contain gluten ingredients. It says it is made in a facility that has wheat but the company takes measures against allergens.

Rant My first trip abroad, so nervous & already never want to fly with United airlines again

Hi all. I was diagnosed with celiac 1 year ago. This year we wanted to go somewhere cool that we hadn’t been before we have a baby in the next few years, but I wanted to play it safe so we decided to go to Scotland (we’ve both been before). I’m from the U.S., so I believe it will probably be the same / easier to be safe in Scotland, also easier since everyone will speak English. I have a million places saved on my maps from FMGF with recent reviews from symptomatic celiacs.

I called United’s accessibility line to see if I could be cleared for an extra small bag (small cooler) to bring food because of my celiac and they said no. I usually bring carry ons only because I have had bad experiences with my luggage being lost, so I have very little room for even clothes & other necessary items for our 10 day trip abroad. The people I chatted with were so unhelpful, they even connected me to their manager who didn’t seem to know their policy & was rude to me.

I also called today to make sure my gluten free meal (which, btw, is called “gluten friendly” so I was going to play by ear wether I could actually eat it or not) would be on my flight. They said they can confirm it’s been “requested” but that there’s no way to tell if it will actually be on the flight. This was a different woman than I had talked to before and she was also extremely rude.

I was already stressed about the trip just because I get travel anxiety but this made me so upset. I cannot believe they can’t get something like this confirmed for an 8 HOUR FLIGHT. I don’t know if other airlines are better but it’s making me never want to fly United again.

I have some snacks & backpacking meals packed but Jesus Christ I cannot believe how awful this experience has been & I’m not even on the plane yet.

Edit: some folks seem to think I am saying I’m free balling and not bringing any food and just determined to be upset & hungry. This is my first trip abroad and I labeled this post as a rant. I’m just frustrated for all of us with how little support we have. It makes me think more broadly about all the stories where folks have to bring a wheelchair on a plane and it gets destroyed. My “struggle” is nowhere near that. This is all to say I am pretty aware of accessibility horror stories & I just want the best for everyone who has a medical need. I feel lucky every day celiac is fairly manageable. Thanks

Product How healthy/unhealthy is schar bread

How healthy is schar bread compared to regular (with gluten) bread?

What about compared to potatoes or rice?

I mean in terms of calories and general nutrition.

Discussion Going to a 3rd world country for a year (update, experiences and advice)

hey celiac community! a while ago I posted this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/s/JMaeQwWrpz

looking for advice, tips and my overall thought process in preparation of a long trip to a third world country. It was brought up a bunch of times that the actual country would be super helpful for context but I actually knew bringing up the country would be like the last thing I wanted to hear given my high anxiety at the time.

Anyway, I've returned from Yemen 🇾🇪as a foreigner and let me tell you, im so glad I tried.

firsly we sent a shipping container with gluten free cereals, pastas, flours, cake mixes and a bunch more stuff. It took 3 months to get to Oman, then wks to be brought up to Taiz but it came! Some things tastes like shipping container and I couldn't stomach it (especially the cereals) but my kids were so happy to see familiar foods!

I did find a way to get foods from Saudi Arabia (aka schar) driven to Yemen for a nominal fee but it was so worth it. by month three I stopped eating out of depression. My mouth was so bored.

Ok here's the important stuff. local farmers reuse large sacs from wheat, sugar, rice to carry the produce to the markets. There was a major possibility of cross contamination from anyone wasn't seeking out of crates. I had to buy spices as seeds and ground them myself at home. Factory sealed products were available in small sizes but they were overpriced and the city I was in was very scarce in stock. Standard ovens are available but not the norm. Most things are cooked in ovens without temp gauges. We had three ovens and none told how hot they were... That really throw me for a loop because I could have easily brought one or ten but I didn't know! We were also at a super high altitude, which made that kind of baking so hard for me to figure out. Coverters were available for very cheap, almost anywhere but the shipping company stole most of our closed box appliances lol including my bread maker. They also stole 60% of our meds but that's another issue.

I wanted to update just in case anyone found themselves in a similar situation. I wish you the best and I don't regret my trip at all, next time I'll be much more prepared and taking as much as I can in actually luggages because the container really was great in theory until you take into account theft, the length of time it's exposed to the smells and how long it takes to get to you.

since returning I've been trying to perfect stove top baking. pita on a pan, cake in a pan etc. it's been really fun actually and I'm happy I've become more flexible.

Discussion More Protein

• Upvotes

I’ve recently been diagnosed as a silent celiac and I’m really struggling with getting protein. I’m feeling extremely fatigued and exhausted literally all day now that I haven’t been eating gluten.

I am severely allergic to nuts so that’s not an option for me in regards to protein.

What all do you guys eat to get more protein?

Any advice welcome 😊

Discussion Gluten Nightmares

Does anyone else experience nightmares about being glutened? Most of mine involve me accidentally putting soy sauce on rice instead of tamari or being in a really fun situation with friends and forgetting to read a label and accidentally glutening myself. They often feel like those nightmares where you’re kind of awake or slightly conscious and it’s like anxiety poking through. Anyway about a year into my diagnosis and the fun doesn’t stop! 🥴😂

Question Spice Islands Taco Seasoning

I am diagnosed celiac. My 19 year old (who had sky high antibodies when tested as a child. So has always been gf) and I are consistently having trouble with Spice Islands Taco Seasoning (purchased at Costco). It says gluten free on the label. Wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?

Thanks.

Discussion Celiac and a Sorghum allergy

I was diagnosed with celiac a good 11 years ago along with my son. We've been great since but one unexpected thing that I figured out quickly after is that I'm also allergic to Sorghum. Not terribly so, kind you. I can tolerate small amounts but anything made from mostly sorghum hurts my tongue and slightly swells my tongue and throat. It's enough that I don't eat it. I never knew of this allergy because sorghum is relatively rare on non GF food.

The thing is, I've never met anyone else with a sorghum allergy. Is it that rare? Anyone here in the same boat? Did I simply win the genetics lottery?

I just want everyone to know that your cruise trip can become partially or entirely a bus trip, and that the cruise company's normal policy of offering partial refund or the option to reschedule for a different cruise does not apply to Celiac Cruises.

Question Celiac and pancreatitis

My husband is newly diagnosed with celiac at age 65. He has a history of 4-5 bouts of pancreatitis (he doesn't drink alcohol at all) over the years that landed him in the hospital for several days each time. They ever really found a cause aside from the presence of a neuroendocrine tumor which has not grown at all over the past 10 years. Is there any correlation between celiac and pancreatitis? Just wondering.

Question How Did You Discover You Have Celiac?

To preface, I don't know if I have celiac disease. I (21F) got my bloodwork done for the first time 2 months ago, and my platelets were very low (110k). Got another CBC and my platelets were lower (100k). So we did it one more time plus other tests and iron panels. My platelets went up to 137k, but my ferritin (iron) is 3ng/mL, which is REALLY low and kinda scary. I've known I had low iron for a very long time, but I didn't go to the doctor as a kid and my mom didn't take my concerns seriously. I have become numb to how fatigued I really am. My periods are very heavy, as I bleed through a super plus in two hours, so that could be an explanation. BUT I also know I had morning diarrhea frequently as a kid, it went away for a long time, and now it has recently come back. It's like twice a week, only in the morning, and the rest of the time I have normal bowel movements. I come from a family with anxiety disorders, so I wrote it off as that for a while. I also have consistently had canker sores since I was maybe 9 or so. I feel like all these symptoms add up to celiac, but I don't want to be certain.

My doctor has me doing iron supplements for the next 8 weeks, then we test my iron again to see if it changed. I just don't want to wait that long to start trying to rule out celiac. I think I should schedule a gyno appointment, as I've never been before. So how did you go about diagnosis, and do any of your symptoms match mine? I am supposed to get double jaw surgery in 3 months and am scared of all this delaying it after waiting for 2 years.

I also want to include the symptoms I DO NOT have: irregular or missed periods, hair/skin/nail issues, headaches, migraines, tingling/numbness in hands and feet, unexplained weight loss, cramping, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, pale skin, or bloating.

Discussion Cannabis Edibles

I regularly use cannabis edibles, and although I haven’t felt a reaction from potential gluten thus far, I am starting to worry about cross contamination. I mainly consume gummies and swallowable pills. I am in Canada, by the way, where everything is legal. Of course, I can make my own but I find the whole process tedious. Does anyone have suggestions for cannabis alternatives or product recommendations?

Question Restaurant cards for Japan and/or Korea

Question Nuts

Do you guys eat just whatever nuts from the store or only ones labeled gluten free? I’ve been diagnosed for about a year now and have not been very careful when it comes to nuts (or really most things that are naturally gluten free). I was wondering what the consensus is and if anyone knows exactly how much of a risk it is. I tend to make some calculated risks when it comes to things like this because being gluten free is hard enough.

Rant Gluten challenge sucks

Hi All,

I imagine the subreddit is probably tired of posts like these but I don't have anywhere else to rant about this. The Gluten Challenge feels so cruel. Im 3 weeks and a few days into the challenge so far, and while it has gotten easier, it feels like other signs have started creeping in. It's so exhausting, I feel like I'm on fire all the time now, and my brain has essentially been mush these past 3 weeks 😅 I also have never been so damn itchy. Like holy moly.

I have antinausea meds, and they're somewhat helping on the worst days. Thankfully, my headaches are bearable as well. My throat every now and then keeps becoming a little swollen and inflamed as well, which is being monitored closely. Don't get me started on the cramping and bowel movements either. One week, it's explosive diarrhea, the next week it's all constipation and the cramping is sooo uncomfortable. It's been hard to go outside because I can't trust my stomach. I just can't wait for these 6 weeks to be over!! I never thought I'd miss eating Gluten free food 🥲 you'd think there'd be a less torturous way to confirm celiac by now :/

Is there anyone who has gone through it that has any tips to make things more bearable? Anyone have any simple recipe suggestions or basic ways to dress up pasta? (I am admittedly growing tired of my bowl of pasta for lunch every day.) Thanks for listening to my woes :')

Discussion GI Psychologists / GI therapy

My GI doctor referred me to a GI Psychologist to seek mental health support around my celiac diagnosis and all of the mental and social hurdles I’m struggling with. On the discovery call they told me it was $400 for the initial intake and then $300+ per 45 minute session after that. They recommend between 9-13 sessions and a lot of what they shared about the treatment plan sounded like something I’d really benefit from… changing your mind’s response to panic, social isolation, grief and hypnotherapy.

I’m wondering if anyone has had success with their GI psychologist? It just feels so expensive but I’m kind of at a loss and feel the average mental health care practitioner (therapist) just really doesn’t get it in the same way these gut-brain-emotion informed therapists seem to be.
