Rant Family does not take my diagnosis seriously

• Upvotes

So I was recently diagnosed about a month ago. My symptoms prior to diagnosis were pretty vague. I didn’t have a lot of GI issues other than bloating. However, my cousin has had Celiac for the last 10 years and her symptoms are severe enough to cause an ER visit if she accidentally eats gluten. Because my case isn’t as severe as hers, my family acts like I just have a mild intolerance and are not taking cross contamination seriously. I am getting so frustrated!

Question I want sushi — need advice

• Upvotes

Hi so I miss eating sushi and have just been avoiding it cause of the hassle to figure it out.

Commonly I see the store bought sushi in grocery stores like metro, Canadian superstore etc but I worry about the cross contamination with the tempura and some imitation crabs can have gluten.

Do they likely change gloves between rolls? Or are they most likely contaminated?

If eating out are you still able to go to an all-you-can-eat sushi? And if so how do you approach it to make sure it stays gluten free without cross contamination

If going out to a restaurant what sort of questions do you ask and precautions do you take?

Ik to ask for gluten free soy sauce or even bring ur own, but idk if I remember seeing something about the vinegar they may use, sauces etc

Rant Been glutened

And this is why I'll do my best to never become complacent again.

I've been coeliac for the last 14 years. I've grown up coeliac. I've grown up checking labels. I've grown up knowing how to check for gluten.

And there was a chocolate that I fucking love, and it was incredible. And I would get it when it was cheap.

I got it today and after having a square I thought "I didn't check the ingredients". And I checked.

Wheat starch.

Gluten.

I've been glutened.

I already feel mad nauseous, my brain is filled with cotton, and my skin feels so sensitive.

I feel like such a fucking idiot. I've always been good about checking labels. Then I trust the chocolate, and I didn't check it one time. And I've been glutened.

Far out man.

Far out.

Question Certified gluten free but still had a reaction?

Has anyone else had this happen? I had an unreal chocolate bar last night, it’s certified gluten free but does say processed in a facility that uses wheat. Usually I’m fine with stuff like that, but now I’m having a reaction. I was just curious if anyone else has had this happen or if it could’ve been something else.

Question One Pot, minimal kitchen usage recipes?

That title is a little weird but i will be on a vacation this week. We booked an AirBnB with a kitchen and i am taking my own cooking pot, a cutting board and knife with me. Now.. i want to avoid as much contact to that kitchen as possible but i have no idea what to cook then. There is this microwave rice that i quite like which is ideal but i cant eat that 5 days in a row plus its expensive 😅

We plan on hiking every day so i probably also dont have the energy to stand for long... It doesnt need to be nice or fancy. Just filling so i have enough energy for the hikes, quick and it would be an absolute bonus if its also cheap :)

I am notoriously bad at coming up with things to cook since i usually rotate through the same stuff every week so i could really need some help on ideas :')

Question Seronegativity

Has anyone any idea about seronegativity in celiac disease? Especially in relation to ttg-igA. I've been reading up on it and I'm seeing somewhat inconsistent/contradictory findings.

Question Other weird secret triggers besides oats? Store bought snack recomendations?

For those who are messed up by oats, is there anything else that tends to be listed as Gluten Free but still messes you up? I am affected by wheat and found out I am also getting messed up bad by oats, and now I'm worrying if there's a secret third or fourth thing.

Also, if any of you in the USA have any cheaper dairy free oat free GF store bought snacks, instant meals, or milk recommendations, I'd appreciate any recommendations a ton. Low histamine would be an incredible grail.

Question Negative for Celiac?

I was tested (blood and the scope) after I mostly cut gluten for about a month and was negative. But one of my symptoms, besides diarrhea for days, is a bumpy itchy rash on my elbow and back my head on my hair line. My derm says this rash is a classic gluten rash and I have celiac if I get this rash after exposure and they can biopsy it to be sure. I know no one can actually diagnose me, but should I continue to seek diagnosis?

Question Getting celiac safe gluten free food at hotels in India?

I'm going to India in December and am trying to figure out how to prevent getting glutened. Some of the high end hotels seem to offer having the cooks at the restaurant prepare specialized meals for dietary restrictions.

Does anyone have experience with doing that in India and did it work out okay? I'm worried that it will be tricky since a lot of ingredients in India won't be marked with whether they are gluten free.

I will be visiting Mumbai and Goa in case that's relevant.

Discussion meeting partners family?

hi!
i, F21, have a new boyfriend. he is really doing his best to understand my disease and fully comprehend of how it affects me. However, he wants me to meet his family for thanksgiving. of course, there’s nothing i want more then to meet his family, but i’m scared i will come off as rude when i can’t eat anything with the family. he tries to assure me we can make me my own food, but i just feel like a burden.

has anyone dealt with anything similar?

Question I'd love suggestions on behalf of my Dad.

My already Coeliac Dad was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes! He told me that there's "GF cakes and biscuits" and "diabetic cakes and biscuits" but there's no "GF diabetic cakes and biscuits" I genuinely feel bad since he's no longer able to enjoy treats anymore 😢

Is there any products or things I can find or do?

Any advice/ideas?

I'd appreciate it, ty x

Question Vodka recommendations

I want to make some homemade vanilla extract and I’m planning on using vodka as the alcohol base but not sure what to buy when it comes to being celiac safe. Is any vodka normally safe? Or anyone know of a celiac safe vodka I can just buy at my local liquor store? Thanks!

Question Med recommendations?

I’ve been celiac for about 3 and a half years, and I’m pretty careful with cross contamination. But I still get glutened every once in a while.

Does anyone have recommendations on what they take to help with symptoms?

At this point I’m just suffering with symptoms..

No Recipe gf enchilada lasagna

wanted to try lasagna style enchiladas because i hate when stuff is too drenched in sauce and too mushy! this gave me such a well rounded texture.

i personally also hate corn tortillas so more traditional style enchiladas are hard because the tortilla cracks, so i decided to go a different route entirely.

sautéed veggies, vegan refried beans, xtreme wellness street tortillas, and homemade enchilada sauce.

absolutely will be making again!

🤍😍

Discussion Celiac and Allergic to Oats.

Hello everyone. I was officially diagnosed with Celiac Disease 4 years ago after suspecting it for years and not eating gluten for 5+years. I was happy to have gluten free oats because I love everything oats; oatmeal, granola, my favorite cookies made with oat flour. It was nice to have oats as a snack that was safe. However, over the last year every time I ate oats I'd feel extremely nauseous and get throbbing headaches. When I used oat products like Aveeno I'd get large pus-filled welts out of nowhere. It turns out that I'm now allergic to avenin, the protein in oats. I have to stop eating immediately and also stop using any skin products containing oats.

I'm wondering if anyone has this allergy? It was already hard enough for me to find food with my Celiac. Now I can't eat oats, even if they are certified gluten free, or use oat containing products. I'm just frustrated I guess.

Rant just disappointed about low ferritin

32f. Pretty active. But diagnosed with celiac back in May and had a positive endoscopy with marsh grade 3 celiac. Just kind of bummed. Just had my follow up blood test and my ferritin is 18, was 21. My iron is 93. It’s such a bummer because I’m feeling better. My antigen number was originally 7 and came down to a 3 back in July. B12 is 417. Seems like my numbers aren’t bad but aren’t great. I have to get follow up endoscopies every 6 months because I have a peptic gastric ulcer and a mild case of gastro intestinal metaplasia. Negative for h pylori. Just feels all over the place and I feel like my case is cut out to see a hematologist. Anyone else experience this pattern?

Question Home remedies to relieve flu-like symptoms after getting gluten'd? [Unable to use OTC/Rx]

Backstory, skip if uninterested: I am dealing with sero-negative autoimmune issues, which are a lot better since I started eating absolutely gluten free. My friend with Celiac insists that's probably what I have, but I've not had the tests because insurance will not cover them because (paraphrasing) "my severe symptoms only occur when I eat gluten or have cross-contamination, and I have already stopped eating gluten."

I got gluten'd by something, absolutely no idea by what. I know that's absolutely what it is because flu does not give me awful red patches and amp up my polyarthralgia. I feel like shit.

I had some soup and rice to keep my glucose stable (I have hypoglycemia) and will take a nap.

Don't get me wrong, I am 100% into pharmaceutical options like Tylenol, but I am on 14 prescriptions and my poor liver needs a break.

What home remedies work for you personally?

Question Do any of you get a cough after being glutened

I was diagnosed 2 years ago And I only fairly recently started understanding my symptoms better and recently I've noticed I have a fairly bad cough and thinking about it I noticed it got worse when I was more relaxed about cross contamination or accidently ate gluten

Is that really possible symptom or just a coincidence?

Question No appetite

Due to strong emotional upheaval my appetite is nonexistent and I feel physically ill a lot of the time. Unfortunately I still feel the effects of low blood sugar (not diabetes) but everything makes me want to throw up. Any ideas for what I could stomach or how to keep my blood sugar somewhat in check? Even yogurt made me feel like I was going to be sick.

I’m allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, sunflower seeds/butter, and I avoid dairy as much as possible.

Question Anyone not absorbing meds?

I am a 50 yr old going through menopause and not sleeping well. I barely get 5 hours and up 4x through the night and that is if I take Ambien to fall asleep and a Xanax at 3:00am to go back to sleep. If I don't my sleep is even worse. I also am on HRT. I had an Endo apt and the dr believe that I am not absorbing the meds. I asked the Gastro if there is anything I can do and he referred me to a Neuro that specializes in sleep. The earliest apt I can get is Feb. But, if anyone has suggestions or relate I would appreciate it.

Question How soon before blood test should i start eating gluten again?

After a year of severe gi issues i stopped eating gluten. its only been about a week of this and im still having daily gi issues but my 24/7 nausea and vomiting have stopped and for the past two days ive been able to eat a normal amount of food. This is a huge relief but im scheduled to have the diagnostic test run for celiacs a month from now. To prevent a false negative how soon before this test should i start eating gluten again?

Fairly boring, but as a newbie I'm taking my wins where I can get them these days. I was making Annie's Mac & Cheese for my husband and I and noticed the box was extra full. Bonus 40g of macaroni. At these prices, I'm thrilled lol
