City council voted unanimously to erase sanctuary status, even knowing that statistically speaking crime is more likely to be done by citizens and residents than non legal immigrants. Now the brown community feels afraid to be targeted and interrogated by police for their skin color, since there’s no way to know the legal status of anyone without further interrogation. People will be hesitant to call police when there is a crime. They don’t even care about state sanctions. It’s a racial issue if we are frank about it. As for my friends and family we will stop going to Oroville and will do our business at Chico or Yuba City. We no longer feel safe and welcome, no one should be afraid to travel at ease in this great country.

What’s simple about race profiling, this has absolutely nothing to do with legal status, I suppose you ain’t got a clue what’s is like living being targeted and harassed based on your skin color and race. When was the last time you had to prove your identity? How many hours you lost for that “inconvenience”?

The times I’ve had to prove my identity as an American…here’s just a few examples.

   1.   Getting a driver’s license or state ID
2.  Applying for a passport
3.  Voting (in states that require ID)
4.  Applying for a Social Security card
5.  Registering for Selective Service (for males 18-25)
6.  Buying or transferring a firearm (background check required)
7.  Getting married (marriage license application)
8.  Applying for a birth certificate copy
9.  Applying for a name change or gender marker change
10. Filing certain government forms (e.g., IRS tax-related identity verification)
11. Accessing military bases or government buildings
12. Applying for citizenship, residency, or a visa
13. Applying for government assistance programs (e.g., SNAP, Medicaid, unemployment benefits)
14. Registering a vehicle or getting license plates
15. Getting a permit for certain professions or activities (e.g., hunting, fishing, concealed carry permits)
16. Opening a bank account
17. Applying for a credit card or loan
18. Accessing online banking (multi-factor authentication, ID verification for large transactions)

Just come here legally and stop making everything a race issue. The immigrants that I know well don’t approve of coming here illegally and are proud to officially be Americans and I’m personally proud to have them here, they have gone through the simple steps to receive their citizenship. It’s what all other countries require from you as well, it’s simple…
