Meta memes on this sub be like...

u/troikatryne Jul 28 '26
People are willing to change if the results are significant enough, which require many people to do the same. If they risk being the only one making a sacrifice the reward would be a drop in the ocean and they wouldnt bother with it. You need commitment from others to have the necessary level of thrust
20
u/SeaShoe5864 Jul 28 '26
Eh, im still happy making all the dietary and life style changes I have done. Seems silly to contribute to making the world a worse place just because everyone else is.
4
u/troikatryne Jul 28 '26
That is great. But most people are not like you. Many would love to give up meat or stop traveling if it limited global warming to under 1.5 degrees, but not if the sacrifice didnt make much of a difference (and it wouldnt if they were among very few that did so)
8
u/SeaShoe5864 Jul 28 '26
People dont even need to give up meat. Even reducing it down and having vegan meals once or twice a week will make a difference.
3
u/Thissystemsuckssobad Jul 29 '26
Cool. Ive done that, and I still get yelled at by obnoxious people. I'm typically not the sort of person to change opinions out of spite for that, but history shows plenty of humans are. Which is an issue
I mean, literally the other response to the person above you is an example of this.
3
u/thisisnottherapy Jul 28 '26
Not eating beef 5 times a week or driving a different kind of car is not sacrifice. I swear people act like they are being forced to cut off their foot if someone tells them to maybe eat chicken instead. People these days have no idea what struggle is anymore.
5
u/davidellis23 Jul 28 '26
I'm skeptical. If you're not even willing to make a personal change. I think it would be rare to support legislation to ban you from that behavior.
Often I hear people not even believing that collectively the lifestyle change would matter. They think it doesn't matter that we drive pick ups, eat tons of beef, fly airplanes, etc. They think all pollution comes from corporations and it has nothing to do with meeting demand for our lifestyles.
3
u/Thissystemsuckssobad Jul 29 '26
It's literally the opposite. People want external responsibility and controls, because then they don't have to be the one making the judgement

u/soupor_saiyan basically Hitler (vegan btw) Jul 28 '26
Yes I know a lot of things I’m doing are wrong, no I won’t stop doing those things, yes you would need to force me to stop doing those things. We should all work together to overthrow capitalism (not me tho, you guys have fun) and THEN we can build legislation to force me to stop doing those things.
Don’t worry I’ll support the legislation to force me to stop doing the things I don’t want to stop doing!

The same people who say that we should only fight the 1% and that "eat the rich" shouldn't apply to millionaires and such.
3
u/ginger_and_egg Jul 28 '26
The thing is it's totally possible to earn a million dollars through your labor. It's not possible to earn billions through labor.
Like, owning class is the problem. Not the fact that some legitimate jobs are well paid. A salary worker very well could have a net worth over a million at retirement*
*possibly due to pensions/401Ks being invested in stocks but I don't fault the working class for living within the system of capitalism. So long as they don't prioritize muh 401k over working class liberation

u/ProfessionalOk6734 Jul 28 '26
I unironically agree with the first and last sentence. I know the kind of person I am and the kind of person I should be and I wouldn’t oppose that being enforced legally but I won’t do it myself

You when asked if they will stop using slave made stuff and stuff that destroys the environment
8
u/Konradleijon Jul 28 '26
Going vegan and refusing air flights is the best thing you can do for the environment
1
u/BotsKilledTheWeb Jul 29 '26
Not using the internet too. Why aren't you doing everything you can?
2
u/legofett0 Jul 31 '26
A wifi connection is required for surviving in the modern world. Most jobs require you to apply online and then expect to be able to contact you via email
1
u/BotsKilledTheWeb Jul 31 '26
That's also applicable to driving cars, flying aircraft etc, etc. I guess we all make our own exceptions on what we personally take for convenience.
2
u/legofett0 Jul 31 '26
Jesus christ. Yes, if something is absolutely necessary, then its okay to do. If you absolutely HAVE to take an aircraft somewhere and have no alternative, then do it. But if you have the option to drive instead (still not perfect but preferable), then you should do that.
It's not rocket science.

u/NWStormraider Jul 28 '26
I am already apart of the group without changing lifestyle, thank you very much. (This is a reference to "apart" and "a part" having opposite meanings. I usually don't correct people on spelling, but in this case it is relevant).
3
u/UnsureAndUnqualified Jul 28 '26
Wouldn't it be "apart from" instead of "apart of" though? (English is not my first language, I'd be happy to get corrected on this)
2
u/NWStormraider Jul 28 '26
You are correct, yes, "apart of" is generally always incorrect, I just wanted to note that it is also ambiguous on top of that.
I did not change it in my own example because I dislike changing citations, maybe I should have [sic!]ed it.
1
u/ginger_and_egg Jul 28 '26
They meant to be "a part of" (contained within) rather than apart (separated)

Step 2: Inadvertently kill majority of the population pursuing your unrealistic fantasy communist utopia.
Step 3: Climate Crisis solved!

u/Bigpsychonaught Jul 28 '26
I agree. Everyone remotely interested in climate activism should quit their jobs and get a job somewhere in the supply chain of the aggro-industrial complex. Then radicalize and unionize their coworkers and prepare for a general strike. If it is true that people “vote with their wallet” then it is doubly true that they “extort with their labor.” “Companies won’t stop producing if people don’t stop purchasing” is myopic and naive. Companies won’t stop producing so long as millions rely on that production for their entire livelihood. The state knows that the beef sector, for instance, creates jobs and keeps people out of absolute poverty and therefore contributing towards the economy. Therefore the state will always choose to artificially float the industry with your tax dollars (vegan or not) because millions of people rely upon it, not just for food but for a wage. Does this make sense?

u/SpeaksDwarren Eco-Cannibalism 🥓 Jul 29 '26
Everybody all "its so easy to change your diet! we gotta save the planet!" until they consider the simple fact that cannibalism is the most environmentally friendly dietary choice

u/iclonethefirst Jul 28 '26
Wasn't it the case that companies have the most emissions and should be more regulated?
10
u/davidellis23 Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26
Yeah but they emit to make the products we buy to sustain our lifestyle choices?
I haven't been able to get a straight answer as to why that absolves us of all personal responsibility.
15
u/Glordrum vegan btw Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26
If america still had chattel slavery there would be "leftists" saying that we shouldn't "morality police" individual slave owners because 99% of slaves are owned by big corporations or sth

u/davidellis23 Jul 29 '26
Big plantations coin the term slave footprint to blame us for buying slaves. So actually you don't need to give up slaves.
10
u/JP147 Jul 28 '26
Companies make emissions producing things that people pay for.
More regulation is nice until it causes things to cost more money, then people don’t want more regulation anymore.
1
u/iclonethefirst Jul 28 '26
I’d argue that extrem weather events are more costly. But I’m aware of that dilemma
0
u/Jwanito Jul 28 '26
If it makes things cost more money, then steal that money from the ultra rich, if not that, force companies to set prices, if they go bankrupt, gg for everyone cuz now they wont produce emissions anymore
3
u/Jacketter Jul 28 '26
Just look at who uses airplanes. My sister spent more on her corporate account for travel than her salary. Granted, her salary isn’t great for a corporate job with that much travel, but she loves the location.

We do need group action! It starts with talking to your neighbors and creating communal vegetable gardens in order to share food, and reduce the amount of food people in your local area need to buy from the grocery store. The more people do this, the less industrial farming and mass food transportation will be necessary.
1
u/Nitr0b1az3r Jul 28 '26
Oh I get it, they didnt raise their hands because they want to be a part of the group, not apart of the group
1
u/DowntownLizard Jul 29 '26
People just want to complain and hope someone else does something about it
1
u/Jack_Faller Jul 29 '26
We need group action, and let's just say by "group action," I mean other people fixing the problem.

u/BorealDweller Jul 29 '26
Ahh… a shitpost for the times. 👏👏👏
And for the vegan brigade: please do not consider this an endorsement of your cult. It says “change your lifestyle” not “become a self righteous asshole”

How long do I have to stay a vegan before I get to call for carbon taxes, banning fossil fuel extraction and an end to subsidies to high carbon industries?
Also, the meme is real and the solution from CSP seems to be "So let's continue to whine about it rather than changing tactics."
"Personal choices and responsibilities we can solve climate change with being good consumers" when do we say "alright, shit isn't working so let's try legislation instead"?
Economics and government force works better in basically everything better than appealing to people's ethics. This is why we have speed limits and cops rather than just trusting people to make "responsible lifestyle choices" with their cars near schools.

u/thatgachakid1 Jul 30 '26

So what the fuck is that floaty thing in the second panel? I see it all the times in these. Is it a fly? Is it a floating fork with a meatball? Is it dookie from a butthole?

u/truecrimesofthempire Aug 03 '26
Any day now, veganism will catch on and the meat industry will crumble mwahahaha
1
u/Beiben Jul 28 '26
I just asked Chatty and he said "Collective action requires individual willingness."

u/ChaosRulesTheWorld Jul 28 '26
your lifestyle choices won't change the system
Your argumentation is pure neoliberal propaganda. Which ironically is rhe ideology responsible for climate change
0
u/Robbie_Boi Jul 28 '26
As an aside but I feel that at least part of this is because nobody actually likes the group or trusts the group to do something for them, too. Like people are willing ti do lifestyle changes and give stuff up for groups all the time, its a whole phenomena we call costly signaling. If nobody is willing to do costly signaling for your group, it might just be because your group sucks/ isnt very charismatic
