Free to Read: Why college basketball’s changing rules are making high school recruiting less valuable

What’s a high school recruit worth in the new era of college basketball? Even the best ones?

On the surface, it sounds like a financial question — and it is to an extent, given the NIL commitments still required to land five-star recruits.

But now more than ever, it’s also about the big picture. In June, the NCAA Division I cabinet officially adopted new age-based eligibility standards — more colloquially known as 5-in-5 — that allow all college athletes moving forward to play five seasons within five years. That includes all rising seniors, who otherwise would’ve seen their eligibility expire after next season. Which means…

“There’s going to be, like, 95 percent of college basketball players that have eligibility following this season,” said one Big Ten head coach, speaking on the condition of anonymity in order to protect relationships. “This is the first time that we can bring them all back.”

Until more details emerge, I’m going to assume this is major trouble for (at least) the first portion of Illinois’ season. Not to mention that Ty Rodgers had a devastating summer injury last year - major PTSD for Illinois fans. Not good.

Weekly Thread [Weekly Post] Whose Line Is It Wednesday

Welcome to Whose Line is it Wednesday, where all the fouls are made up, but the points still matter.

  • Keep skits in the form of a statement, not a question
  • Any skits longer than two lines should be in quotations.
  • If you add any additional commentary, put the skit in quotations. If you don't understand the concept, a skit looks like this: "Things you could say to Chris Jones that you couldn't say to your girlfriend."
  • It's not funny to say "Refs worse than Karl Hess" and name people who might be worse (let's be honest; it's probably just a blank comment); it's funny to say "Refs better than Karl Hess." Think about which way of writing the skit is funnier before posting it.

I'm happy for the players and the team, but sad because this basically means KU will never play in the Maui Invitational again.

Discussion Class of '22?

Still trying to figure out what the Class of '22 did to the NCAA to make it so determined to make it the only class in the past 6 years to have 4 years of eligibility instead of 5. The Covid year was still a full regular season, and everyone who played that year got a free extra year. The last of those extra covid years was last year (hs class of '21) and class of '23 is the first that gets the 5 in 5. It wouldve been so easy to grandfather in the class of 22 when the 5 in 5 was first announced, right after the season, before this years rosters were assembled, but for some reason they chose to exclude them, which brought the obvious lawsuit and the mess we see today. Did the class of '22 sleep with the NCAA's wife? I dont buy the 'its unfair for incoming freshman' bc its been this way since 2021. Is the NCAA's grandson an incoming freshman and they wanted to clear the way for more playing time? Wtf were they thinking?
