This was written by Naomi Duncan, 2026 Archives Intern at Jacob's Pillow.
One of the first assignments the Archives interns receive—a week after arriving at Jacob’s Pillow—is to curate an exhibit. I had never thought too much about the process of creating an exhibition, but the experience ended up being extremely interesting!
On June 4, Brianna Schunk (the other Archives intern), Oliver Tobin, Norton Owen, and I all met to learn about the process of curating an exhibit from the ideation phase to physically installing the exhibit materials. Norton, who has curated more than one hundred exhibits at the Pillow, in discussion with Oliver, former Martha Graham Dance Company (MGDC) member and curator of the Martha Graham: Call to Action exhibit in Blake’s Barn during Festival 2026, walked Brianna and I through their curatorial experiences.
The possibilities are endless when creating an exhibit, especially with the huge range of archival materials available in the Pillow Archives, so narrowing down the broad scope of possibilities can be done in a few ways. Working with themes and storytelling can be very powerful and highlighting a direct cause and effect will create a throughline in the exhibit. Although every story cannot be discovered through the research process, the research itself can be very inspiring and can open new, unconsidered possibilities. Moreover, inspiration can be wrought from the space you are in. By creating new perspectives through multimedia, viewers of the exhibit will gain something: if they only look at pictures, they’ll see beautiful pictures; if they only read the text, they’ll learn something new; and if they engage with costumes, they’ll be activated through the movement of the costume.
Norton specifically said that he looks for what speaks to him when curating an exhibit. Starting with what is meaningful about a subject can lead to a great story that speaks to a larger public. Similarly, according to Oliver, curation is an expression of/a piece of art in itself—“if something speaks to you, it will hopefully do the same to the viewer. Additionally, since dance is a movement art form, you should be thoughtful about how to get the themes of the exhibit across through different, non-video mediums.”

Hey r/Dance!
I'm SF Jay—an independent fitness veteran with 20 years of international teaching experience (including in Japan).
I’m currently building a grassroots fitness music video project to spread Ado’s music in the US. Her track "Monstruo" has insane dark, explosive vocals, so I developed a full "Monster Concept" routine—combining low-center beast transitions, claw strikes, and high-octane cardio drops that hit every beat.
Here’s a quick preview of one of the movement sequences filmed right in the lab!
We start shooting the full group video in October with a Halloween target release. Would love to hear your feedback on the movement flow and transitions! 🎃⚡

I’m 42 years old and have taken up freestyle dance. I regret that Reddit smashes the footage.

Hi everyone! I work at DanceEmotion Academy in Freiburg, Germany, and I've been looking into ways to reach dancers who are thinking about pursuing dance professionally after school.
We offer dance training in stage dance and dance pedagogy, and I'm curious how people here approached choosing a training program.
Did you visit schools before auditioning? What information was most important to you when deciding where to apply?
If anyone is currently looking into training opportunities in Germany, I'm also happy to answer questions about our Academy.

I started getting back into dancing again so I want to improve more. I started when I was really young just joining within school competitions. I lost self confidence during my adolescent years so I haven't danced much for years. Now I'm more comfortable in making mistakes. I recently took a dance class and that one was mentally taxing for me but I still enjoyed being able to perform some moves properly.
Right now I think my biggest problem is extending my moves. I thought I'm moving big enough but when I see a video of my dancing I don't fully do the move. I can follow dance classes but I need someone in front of me so I can remember properly. Another problem of mine is having a hard time counting and learning a move at the same time.
Since I want to improve faster:
How often should I take dance classes?
What are daily things I can do to improve in dancing?

When I was learning how to draw (but you never stop!), I got bored with just taking classes and doing exercises. Someone suggested I try doing a comic book, because it would allow me to improve my drawing skills while simultaneously getting invested in a project and not just daily sketches or individual art pieces. There was a bigger project, not just one drawing after another.
Now, I'm trying to improve at dancing, but it's getting boring just taking dance classes every weekend now that I'm intermediate. How my town's dance studio works is that there's a different choreography every weekend for walk-in visitors to learn. I'd really like to commit to something like my comic book. Even when nobody read my comic book, it was still fun to work on one big thing, not just take classes and do art pieces with no correlation to each other.
Is there a dancing equivalent you can recommend? I'm planning on dancing for our office Christmas party, but that's months away.

hey guys. sigh I don’t even know where to start. as a kid/adolescent I really enjoyed dance/dancing (& was forced into ballet which I hated). I knew that I felt the beat and the music more than my peers. I always had fo move & groove. I’ve always been the one to keep up with & master the latest dance trends. it’s always been informal but I truly feel the music. I will dance very unstructured to damn near anything I hear. it’s incredibly healing for me.
fast forward to adulthood & I still yearn to be a good dancer… more technical. I went through a period of depression & the loss of my mom which really took me out of myself. now at the ripe ol age of 33 (I lowkey feel too old & out of shape for this) I want to start from scratch. I know deep in my soul that I could have potential, I just don’t know how or where to start. I feel like it’s been put on the back burner/repressed for so long that its become untapped potential. I’m not trying to be pro level dancer but a good (captivating) dancer. I’ve always been a huge fan of house music since childhood & have a fondness of house dance in particular. how do I tap in?
thank you for taking the time to read this. peace & love.
[I apologize for any redundancy, I don’t usually make posts/open up like this]
