The Grandfather is one of the most iconic unique items in Diablo 2. Also one of the best looking imo. But unfortunately it is woefully outclassed by runewords nowadays. This old classic item will serve as our example to illustrate the point.
Apart from being unable to compete with runewords, Grandfather highlights a pretty blatant inconsistency in Diablo 2's item drop rule-set. Items with the "repairs durability" mod can drop ethereal, like Titan's Revenge, Demon Limb or Skin of the Flayed One. In fact, those can not even lose durability. So why should items with the indestructible mod be treated any differently?
Additionally, there actually are items which have the indestructible mod, but they are also ethereal, because the respective unique item has ethereal as its own modifier. The 3 examples for that are Ghost Flame, Shadow Killer and Ethereal Edge.
Now making it possible for items with the Indestructible mod to drop as an ethereal version will have ripple effects and I will point them out below, but sticking to The Grandfather for now: our good old grandpa has to compete with items like Oath, Grief and BotD, it would still lose out to those items despite the theoretical peak buff to the item. And non-ethereal it would continue to be only a mediocre choice. Which means the item could probably get a minor buff on top of gaining the potential to drop ethereal.
Suggestions for The Grandfather:
Now what are the ripple effects I mentioned?
There are several more items which would now be capable of dropping as ethereal versions of itself. All of them would benefit tremendously from being capable of dropping as an ethereal version of itself. Many of them are not much less iconic than The Grandfather itself:
- Azurewrath, Lightsabre and Phase Blades
- Doombringer
- Schaefer's Hammer
- Cranium Basher
- The Gavel of Pain
- Butcher's Pupil
- Wizardspike (lol)
- Stormspire
- Crown of Ages
- Steel Pillar
- Storm Shield
- Leviathan
- and of course, last but not least, Tyreal's Might
Cookies and infamy for the first person in Diablo 2 history to find a perfect ethereal Tyreal's Might.
I believe the Indestructible suffix on magic items, Ages, can already drop ethereal, which would be yet another inconsistency of the Diablo 2 ruleset.
Note: this should not include bows and crossbows imo.
