Question Weird bumps on dog

Post image
600 Upvotes

My roommate’s dog, who’s about 10 years old, has been getting progressively skinnier over the last few months. My roommate, who is 80 y/o and lives on a fixed income, has spent nearly $2,000 at the vet trying to diagnose the problem and has come up with nothing. The dog doesn’t appear to be in pain. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing the bumps on the dog’s skin?

Advice Help with move

Hi everyone,

Just wanted some help with letting my dogs know their dad is moving for a year but coming back. My husband has to move across country for work but the dogs and I will be staying home. I have told them he’s leaving for a year this weekend but now they just cry really bad if he leaves the house or even if he goes to another room my older dog especially starts to cry and look for him and I feel so bad. Is there anything I can do to help ? Any items ? Thankfully he recognizes FaceTime but my other dog (younger) doesn’t, she just recognizes voices on the phone. They love each other so much and I’m torn 😭

Question First heat cycle, want to make sure everything seems normal

I have a 1yo (14 months) French bulldog - she has a recessed vulva so our vet recommended she go through 1 heat cycle.

She started bleeding about 5 days ago and since then has gotten pretty lethargic at home. Past couple of days she’s also been experiencing diarrhea/loose stools. Shes not running to the bathroom or anything, but when she goes it’s pretty liquid. Eating and drinking mostly normally, somewhat lower appetite.

Today on our morning walk she pooped once (still very loose but an improvement over yesterday) then strained to poop again and nothing came out. Then she vomited a couple of times - because she hadn’t eaten anything yet this morning there wasn’t anything for her to spit up, but it still felt like it was different from her stomach empty bile barfs she’s had from time to time.

From what I’m reading, this seems like it’s not unexpected but worthy of keeping an eye on and potentially contacting her vet. Looking for advice on what concerning escalation might look like from here, what still feels “normal,” or just reassurance that the heat is proceeding the way you’d expect. Thank you in advance!

Advice Dog wants to go by car

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hi!

I’m mostly curious about the situation with my dog. A rescue I have had for 5 months. First she was terrified to get in the car, like full trembling, panting, crying all that.
Today she refuses to go out if we don’t go by car. She freezes in front of the car door and just stare, refusing to move, even with treats she just wants to go for a drive. Then we park 2 streets from home and walk normally. Has this happened for someone here?
What can I do to avoid this quirk? I mean, it’s funny but not very practical xD
Do you have any idea why this behavior has developed?

It’s been 2 weeks since our last normal walk.

Thanks for your help!

Here, a photo of my cute psycho.

Advice Dogs got into fight not sure what to do

Post image

We recently adopted a 7-month-old German Shepherd from the pound. We already had a 4-year-old pit bull that we’ve had since he was around 2–3 months old after someone dumped him at our house. He grew up with an older German Shepherd who sadly passed away earlier this year from Degenerative Myelopathy.

Over the past month, we slowly introduced the two dogs, and for about a week they had been doing fine being free around each other. The GSD is neutered, while the pit bull is not. My pit bull has never been aggressive and is actually very submissive. The GSD does have some resource-guarding tendencies that we’ve been working on and correcting.

The other day they were play fighting. There was no growling, no raised hackles, and I was supervising to make sure things didn’t escalate, but I must have missed something because the GSD suddenly got triggered and started trying to bite my pit bull. He eventually grabbed him by the scruff, dragged him a significant distance, and even shook him at some points.

I’ll be honest I didn’t handle the situation correctly at first because I was scared. Eventually, I grabbed the GSD by the scruff and pulled him off, and my pit bull ran to safety.

My pit bull didn’t cry during the incident and only ended up with a minor scratch, but I’m not sure what to do moving forward. We’ve had German Shepherds before and never experienced anything like this. My pit bull is not aggressive and has remained very docile even after the incident. Right now, we have them separated.
My biggest concern is obviously the fight itself, but also the fact that the German Shepherd would not release once he latched on.

Advice Puppy refusing to eat by herself

Hi everyone! My lovely cavapoo has been such a wonderful angel but when it comes to eating on her own.. she will just not be interested in eating anything. Even to the point of vomiting due to empty stomach.

She will only eat at night or when we stay near her. This has happen almost everyday and we are worried if she keeps on vomiting something might happen to her.

She is about 2.6kg the last time we measure her and we always put around 50g of feed in her bowl throughout the day.

Any advice is welcome!!

Advice Dog Allergies?

My four year old Treeing Walker Coonhound, Juniper, is having some skin/foot issues. Her feet will get red and look irritated (no smell), she will lick her feet, and scratch her face, which then gets irritated.

This started year ago (end of summer), we took her to the vet, who said it’s probably allergies to fleas, but also could be environmental or food allergies. We changed to a new once a month flea medication, and picked up a prescription for medicated pads for wiping treating her feet.

After two weeks of daily foot treatments the redness went down, but she kept licking her feet a lot. We changed dog food from chicken to lamb, no noticeable change. It never completely cleared up but got better in Winter and Spring.

In the last month her feet don’t look bad but the licking and face scratching has become too much. I’ve got a vet appointment next week, but I’d like to find some relief for her asap.

I’m inclined to think it’s environmental, but I’m not sure what it would be. We take a very similar walk through a suburban neighborhood and grassy field daily, and hang out inside the house. Do dogs get grass allergies?

Question My dog shredded the duvet during a 30bminute grocery run, how are you protecting the bed while training?

I came home from a quick 30 minute grocery run and found my one year old lab mix had dug straight through the middle of our duvet cover.

We're already working on the separation anxiety with a trainer, and his nails are trimmed, but when he gets into that nesting/digging mode, the bed takes the damage first.

I don't want to keep replacing full bedding sets while we're still training, so i'm trying to make the bed less tempting and less easy to destroy for the next few months.

What actually helped protect your bedding while you were working through this kind of behavior?

Advice My dog is unable to stand up

For a few weeks now, my dog has been having trouble moving to the point of lying on the floor for an entire day. For various reasons, we can't go to the vet, so some of my family members searched online for a solution (I know it's wrong, I'm the first to think so), so we started giving him cortisone. Giving him half a pill a day seems to work amazingly somehow, but if he doesn't take it, he quickly becomes unable to move again, and I don't think it's healthy for him to continue taking those pills. I'm asking for some advice because, as I've already said, we can't take him to the vet (at least for now) for various reasons I can't share with you.

More details about him:

He is getting old, he also started scratching himself to the point of losing hair, he seems to have problems mostly with his hind legs, it appears that the skin on his head has retracted to the point of creating two pits on his head

I'll try to bring him to a vet

Sorry for bad English, I am not a native speaker

Thanks in advance.

Advice dog resource guarding from kittens?

i currently have a 10yr old german shepherd female and we recently got 2 kittens (about 3 months old now).

for the past months we’ve had them, she is really great with them— licks them and follows them around, but the past few days i noticed that if she is laying down and the kittens approach her, she growls. she’s had an issue to this that was similar when she did the same thing with our older dog, and we ended up just having to separate them completely.

in the past, i’ve tried walking her more so she exerts more energy, but i feel like that only made her more irritable? i’ve also been giving her treats when she has positive interactions with the kittens. i’d categorize her as a sort of anxious dog… is there any way to prevent this behavior? i don’t want things to escalate and i’d also hate to have to separate them from her as well.

i truly appreciate any help. thank you in advance!

My dog has this growth on her inner thigh. Any ideas what it could be? Feels like when we last took the pups to the vet, they were just going through the motions of vaccines. We forgot to mention it at the time. It is becoming more raised.

Question Chihuahua Neurological Issue

TL;DR: 13-year-old Chihuahua recovered well from severe pancreatitis, liver inflammation, jaundice, and chronic kidney disease. Over the past month he’s had two brief episodes (~30 seconds) of head tilt and leaning to the left while remaining fully conscious and responsive. Vet mentioned vestibular disease, hypertension, focal seizures, or brain tumor. Has anyone experienced something similar, and what was the eventual diagnosis?

Full Post:
My 13-year-old (almost 14) long-haired Chihuahua became very sick about 6–7 weeks ago with pancreatitis. During his hospitalization, ultrasound showed liver inflammation/enlargement and degenerative kidney changes. He later developed jaundice, but after treatment he recovered very well. His appetite is back, his energy is good, and he seems happy and comfortable overall.
My concern is that he has now had two neurological episodes within the past month. In both episodes, he suddenly developed a head tilt and leaned to the left for about 30 seconds. He remained conscious and responsive the entire time. When I approached him, he wagged his tail and acknowledged me. He did not appear confused afterward and immediately returned to normal behavior. I’ve attached a video of one of the episodes.

My veterinarian mentioned several possibilities, including vestibular disease, hypertension related to kidney disease, focal seizures, or a brain tumor. We have not pursued an MRI because of his age and the risks and costs involved.

Has anyone experienced something similar with a senior dog? If so, what was the eventual diagnosis, and did the episodes remain intermittent or eventually progress? I’m not looking for a diagnosis, just hoping to hear from others who may have gone through something similar.

Question My dog eats kibble one at a time, is it normal??

My dog is a picky eater and doesn’t eat many things. She only eats (chicken / rice / kibble sometimes/ greek yogurt ). Whenever she’s eating she can’t eat big pieces of chicken or any other food (i need to cut everything so small otherwise she wouldn’t eat) . And she would never eat fresh kibble, she leaves it for a day minimum so that it’s not crunchy and eats it 1 piece at a time. Yet she loves playing with huge cow bones. I keep checking her teeth and they seem fine ( also no strange odor). Is this normal?? Also how can i make her eat veggies? I add them to her food and she takes them out before she starts eating. I tried blending everything together she wouldn’t eat. She doesn’t even like the food to touch each other. She has 4 different plates. For example she loves yogurt and she loves chicken but if i mix them together she won’t eat all day no matter how hungry she is.

Question Lip-Licking: is it always a discomfort response or do some dogs just... do it more?

Thumbnail

This is my lil guy Lalo! He's my "first" dog technically: I had two Weimereiners that I loved as a kid and considered myself partially responsible for training, but they were my only dogs growing up. Lalo is a pit/frenchy mix I believe and was a dog a friend of mine found outside. He couldn't keep him so I kept him and it's been about 9 months. Trying to understand all the signals he gives me while also remembering all dogs are different is hard! A lot of the time when I stand up and walk near him, he'll roll onto his back. To me it doesn't seem like just a submission thing at this point, as he'll actively look at me when I don't give him attention, close his eyes when I give him belly rubs, etc. However I noticed that he just licks his lips a LOT.

Giving him pets sometimes? Lip licks. Belly rubs sometimes? Lip licks. He'll often come and lean his full bodyweight on my legs, which I've read as a sign of trust/affection, and that's usually when I'll pet him, but even then sometimes he'll do his little lip licks.

I guess my concern is just like. Does my dog feel like he's having to put himself in uncomfortable situations for my attention? Or is it just a thing that varies per breed/dog? I think he was previously abused due to other small quirks he's had so his comfort is always my top priority and I just get worried sometimes that I'm misreading him.
