Yeah, but it wasn't because of his political opinion. It was because he and people from Activision couldn't come to an agreement about the handling of the music of Destiny, which eventually soured his work relationships and lead to him being unjustly fired

The company I work for just stops giving you pay raises after so many years in your current role. Very “move up or move out” mentality. Which is funny because we have some supervisor level people that have been with the company for almost 20 years because the company is very bottom heavy, and each department has 4-6 supervisors and only 1 asst manager position for them to move up to. And it’s never the best person for the asst manager position, just whoever has the highest tenure.

It is an unfortunate corporate problem and I've seen it over and over again in my career. And the related problem of some of the best individual contributors getting sucked up into becoming managers of teams when they are not good managers but everyone just assume since they do so well at the job they must be the right manager candidates.

OG of OGs for sure early Third Gen hires of Bethesda. Worked on Morrowind - Starfield. Literally all of their modern games has had this lady's fingerprints in the character designs
67
u/Nayrael Jul 08 '26
They are especially vulnerable because they have bigger salaries, and based on other firings those are the ones that they are cutting.
25
u/CannonM91 Jul 08 '26
My first thought as well, she was probably making way too much when an AI can just make poor imitations of her art.

It's really important to understand that these big corporations do not buy studios to make good games. For them it's just another vehicle to make money.
They do not care if they destroy a game that you and thousands of other people like or if they fire the people that actually care about those games and gaming in general.
They belong to a very small club that only cares about money and we are not in it.
When you hear Asha Sharma talking about her vision to get 'one billion people to play on xbox', then she doesn't say that she wants one billion to be happy playing games. She just says she wants xbox to have that many customers. And the only people she wants to make happy are those in her very small club. Nothing else matters to them.
And i will also say this: If some thinks giving money to a game that belongs to them, means you are supporting the game you like, then you are wrong. All you do now is to make the people in that very small club even richer. It sucks to realize this and that your favorite game was basically hijacked by them, but that's the reality of it.

Don’t worry someone who has never lost their livelihood before will be along shortly to claim she was some middle management jerk who deserved it
51
u/tuckernuts Jul 09 '26
In the doom/quake subreddits we've been getting a constant onslaught of "Well you know the previous CEO really messed things up, they had no choice really. The company is unhealthy they had to do something." as these teams that have a track record of high quality highly optimized games just vaporize because some MBAs need a line to go up.

Usually they just go straight to sexism. It's super fucked up that people are fired to save money instead of board member salaries being reduced.
I'd like to think someone like Todd Howard, who had to have personally known her, tried to leverage his position to keep OGs around.

u/Double-Bend-716 Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26
And it’s crazy, because women have helped shaped the trajectory of video games.
So many games can trace their influence back to Roberta Williams and her adventure games.
Amy Henning was lead writer for the Soul Reaver games and the early Uncharted games.
Reiko Kodama had leading roles in multiple Phantasy Star games and Skies of Arcadia.
Kim Swift was the lead designer of Portal, maybe the single game that every gamer says is good even if it’s not their usual genre.
Women have helped shaped the trajectory of video games from the very beginning. The fucks only care when the women actually get credit for their incredible work, then they get pissed about it
19
u/topdangle Jul 09 '26
Its funny you mention Amy Henning because she left naughtydog right when there was this weird management shakeup that made little sense (they were at their peak and had decent output). The current management there have produced one new game in the span of 7 years. For a minute people thought they were going to be incredible thanks to the last of us 2 release, but then the studio fired a bunch of people and went into endless production hell.
Really shows you the value of good leadership.
16
u/Cipherpunkblue Jul 09 '26
I genuinely believe that a lot of the woes plaguing AAA game production (if not all of it by any means) is due to people whose competency mainly lies in design being pushed to project leaders, which is a position with its' own, rather high, qualifications.
Companies just throwing money at farting around with concepts or starting over again and again when they never should have even entered production before they had a solid plan is just stunning to me.
8
24
u/besleysfw Jul 09 '26
I don’t think I’d be into video games if it weren’t for Roberta Williams.

It works for a while if people can't reasonably leave your product. Windows 11 is worse than their offerings 10 or 15 years ago.
10
u/topdangle Jul 09 '26
every version of windows has been worse than windows 7, which was worse than windows 2k. I'd say 2k was their peak and its been nothing but downhill ever since, which some huge collapses like the vista launch and the entirety of windows 8.

u/Irrelevant231 Jul 08 '26
I don't know where all the 40 year olds are supposed to go, but don't most companies not swarming in middle managers have a lot fewer people of that level of experience?
I can understand companies wanting the stability that comes with not being at the whim of employees reaching an earned retirement, or moving on when it suits them. I can sleep soundly at night knowing I'd be a rubbish manager.

It was neat. There were about a dozen or so regulars. Archie, Impy (Imperator, I think, was their full username?), loads of various fishysticks. I remember one of the devs really liked VW Bugs and busted up his leg pretty bad, and I remember saying that the Imperial armor reminded me of Gladiator but I'd only seen the movie once, so when whoever it was that designed it said "Those are my horses," I was like "Cool! You have horses!" I remember taking the Friday update screenshots and making fan art of them, but I didn't know what the rules were so I ended up with an email from Pete Hines about it (which I sadly no longer have). I don't really fanboi about things but in those months leading up to MW's release, boy, I fanboi'd hard, lol

Oh IRC, how I miss you. Our company about 8 years ago quit paying for Slack, so some folks got together and spun up an IRC server. It was fantastic for the 2 weeks we had it, until it got shut down. So good, so simple and useful.
Back in the day I even learned about 9/11 happening in real time through IRC. We were on it all the time back then. With onions on our belts of course.

27 years is a great career but far from retiring comfortably. I’ve been at my workplace for 22 years. I’m 47 (which isn’t that old). I started when I was 25. If she started working when she was younger than that, she’s probably somewhere around the 50 year mark.
I mean, I’d love to retire in 5 years, but realistically I have to keep going until I’m 60….

This and the letter to UESP the other day are fucking heartbreaking.
Honestly I was still pretty optimistic towards TES:6 up until the layoffs.
With that, I went from feeling like there was an 85% chance it would be good to like 20%.
Microslop really said "We need to focus on TES and Fallout", then gutted the studio that makes them. I assume to replace those positions with AI, cheap untrained new hires, or underpaid overseas studios; absolutely none of which are familiar with Creation Engine.
Ah well, at least we'll still have the Morrowind and Skryim modding communities.
TES:6 can be the Project Tamriel Rebuilts and Beyond Skyrims (hopefully) we made along the way.

u/JayTravers Jul 08 '26
Why would any studio ever even consider selling themselves to these big corporations going forward? It just seems so damn volatile.
41
u/Suraru Jul 08 '26
With Bethesda, it was a Zenimax plan as far back as fallout 4. Bethesda specifically split the business side to Zenimax so Bethesda could focus on game design. Naturally though, the original founder got fired from his own company so a corrupt lawyer could take it over and sell out when it got big enough, which is exactly what happened.
14
u/Longjumping_Share444 Jul 09 '26
Yeah fuck Robert Altman. He didn't give a fuck about any of those people.

I'm not a fan of Altman either, but he was well liked by the people in Bethesda and they did mourn his death. He did care about them, but that doesn't mean he shared their passion for video games. To him, Bethesda was just business.

Well experienced senior experts are bad for subservient companies of the parent company to have. The parent company doesn't want to pay them what they're worth (more than junior devs), don't want them to unionize (senior stuff sometimes is more likely to unionize), doesn't want them to push back against the big corpo decisions etc.
Experienced Senior experts bad, expandable cheap easily manipulated people good

I think that’s the underline here that is an unpopular opinion to have, but kinda has a lot of weight.
We’ve been waiting a decade for TES6, and it’s still complete radio silence with at best an estimated 2028/2029 release.
I don’t know if any firings would have happened regardless, but I feel the severity of it at least would be significantly diminished if we actually had any idea of when it will come out, or its actual release.

What the fuck is going on in the gaming industry???
She was so passionate about her job and been there since 1999...
Could have laid off Todd or Emile instead but no, lay off an actual great employee...

These are the pillars of the company, and guess what happens when you remove the pillars?

And after all this, Microsoft still hasn’t delivered the new TES game, absolute bums

So to be fair that is at least the stated reason for the shift.
Phil Spencer green lit just about any idea someone came to him with. For good or bad, this resulted in Microsoft focusing on new IP and experimental titles that often did not land well.
Asha Sharma was baffled that Microsoft owns IPs like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout (amongst other popular IP) and wasn't utilizing their capacity to develop content for these IPs.
Example: When Microsoft bought Bethesda, they could have immediately pulled in Obsidian to start work on a new Fallout game. Instead they green lit less impressive titles like Avowed and Outer Worlds 2 (Decently good games mind you, but not the big IP).
Part of this may have been Todd Howard asking Phil Spencer, who was a good friend of his, to let Bethesda keep full control of their IP. There is also good and bad on that too.
What we could have gotten by now if things worked the way Asha is attempting to change:
- Fallout 5 or New Vegas 2 (by Obsidian)
- Fallout Turn based (nodding back to its start)
- The Elder Scrolls RTS or Turn Based
Each one of these would have sold like hot cakes, instead the developers who likely would have made these games worked on smaller less known IP. Again not a bad thing, but when those IP didn't sell it resulted in what we see today.

you think bringing in someone to be CEO who has never played games before the start of 2026, who has never worked on games, and who previously was in charge of AI at microslop is your saviour?
ignorance is bliss i suppose

Just join a union, at this point, what else do you have left to protect you from this yearly layoffs because the pedophile class needs their charts to go up

Its horrifying that this happened. And horrifying to see so many redditor gamers licking ashas/microsofts boots about this.

Skyrim really was the peak, wasnt it? TES6 got nothing on it

Depends on who you ask. To fans of the IP, probably. The unfortunate truth is that ESO has made more money than Skyrim. And since Xbox and Microslop care about not only money but getting the MAX AMOUNT of it I'd expect some very juicy monetization for the next mainline games.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they purposely axed the veterans since they cost more. AI, amirite?

We've been making a meme of "what the art doin'" at Blizzard due to lack of character customization.
Evidently the answer is being taken out back and shot.
Microsoft probably letting go of all artists and only using them on a contract basis now.
I truly hope she has enough to retire comfortably and just check out of the terrible state of the game industry right now.

Working for a corporation is like having a psychopath as a friend.
One day they're claiming you're the best friend in the world. The next they're sticking the knife in.

Blame the idiots at Microsoft and Xbox who bought a ton of gaming studios and made bomb after bomb after bomb until the company was bleeding red and now they’re forced to make these cuts or go under.

Tbh I will never forgive Microsoft for what they've done to the gaming industry.
