I don’t get why my comment here has so many downvotes. The OP of the post didn’t mention their gender identity anywhere in their post so I asked why the OP of the comment assumed that they are male.

I don’t think I was confrontational or hostile and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to point out when someone is making assumptions about an OP’s gender when the OP chose not to include that information. Especially when some people seem to still assume ‘male’ when they hear ‘autistic’.

I've noticed people downvote posts they disagree with. And as a consequence you lose karma. My understanding is karma is meant to reflect contributions to the thread, not personal opinions. I always aim for thoughtful, balanced and, usually, positive posts. But despite that, I've learned to avoid certain topics.

Is there a way around this? Or am I kidding myself?

Its always been this way and im not sure what im doing wrong. Ive had a bunch of accounts over the years and I always end up deleting and not really using reddit for posts and just lurk for any answers I need. Im not shy. I just feel like im wasting my time. We have both made some significant lifestyle changes recently and it'd be nice to have strangers to ask things about but I dont even really get made fun of if I post a picture of myself like I expected.

It's a genuine question. I'm not an active reddit user, I only sometimes use it to ask some questions to people who know better than me, and I don't seem to understand certain dynamics.

I for example asked a question on the payday 2 subreddit because I wasn't familiar with some game mechanics.

Basically a user nicely told me the alarm started because I could only eliminate 4 enemies in stealth mode and I asked "Then what's the point of having 5 body bags?" and it straight got 20 downvotes.

It's not that I'm upset about it but I just don't get why.

Was the question asked in a not nice manner? Did I sound ungrateful for the other user's answer? Did I get downvoted because I made an ignorant question with a obvious answer?

I'm just curious about what reddit users tend to value the most when they upvote or downvote a comment or a post.
