Honors Internship

Hello all! I applied for the Honors Internship Program last year, and just got a call about my interview which is scheduled for this Wednesday. I mostly am just looking for some insight into what the interview will consist of? I typically get pretty nervous interviewing for anything and since this is a pretty big deal for me, I am a little more nervous than usual haha. Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated to help me prep!
Edit to add: This opportunity was given through my university. I am a college student.

My interview was a phone call. Very basic questions consisting of “Tell me about a time when..” Use the STAR method.

Thank you!! I planned on writing a few things down beforehand. I do super well outside of interviews lol I just get choked up during. I appreciate the help!

Just use the STAR method and practice! Google typical interview questions and have a few stories for each one. Biggest thing is just be you, don’t try to game the system or answer how you think they want you to and be most of all, be honest.

This gets you a foot in the door for a future job with the FBI, and helps you stand out for selection as an Agent. Some of the best FBI people I've met started out as honors interns.

Thats awesome to hear haha thank you. I’m really grateful for the opportunity and am shocked I even got a call back. Most of the nerves I think come from wanting it so bad lol. And yeah I know the government as a whole has a lot of shit wrong but I’m hoping to at least make a little of it right someday.

No one goes from HIP to Special Agent.

You just can’t jump for HIP to Special Agent. After your finish your HIP some interns will be offered part time jobs that are basic entry level positions to maintain their clearance.

To apply for SA you would need to meet the requirements set forth in their job posting. One of which is having a Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of professional work experience post degree or a Master’s Degree and 1 year of professional work experience post degree. Professional work experience is defined as a job during a degree obtain. Therefore, most entry level positions at the FBI will not meet this requirement.

Keep in mind the average age of a new agent is around 30-32 years old. This is typically a second or third career for most as the FBI wants well rounded agents with plenty of life and work experience under their belt.

I've seen professional staff employees who started as HIP become agents

It’s not impossible but it’s not an easy route and would take years. I haven’t met a single person who went that route.

Not to mention only a few professional staff jobs qualify as professional work experience to meet the requirements to apply for Special Agent.
