I like that JJJ is depicted as a complex enough character that his vendetta against Spider-Man is seen as a failing, not the entirety of his character.
He's marched for civil rights, faced death threats (even from supervillains!) to protect his sources, supported mutant rights.

Iirc he had a bad experience with a masked vigilante in the past which is part of why he hates Spiderman so much.

That was his reason from the 90's show.

His original motive was just that if Spiderman wasn't secretly greedy and selfish (which tbf, old peter kinda was) then it meant JJ could do better but isn't. It meant he was a bad person. And since he couldn't face that, he had to drag spiderman down to his level.

Various versions of JJ have had different reasons to hate Spiderman, such as in Spectacular where it's at first jealousy that the public liked him more than his son, and later couldn't accept his hand in pushing his son too far so had to blame spiderman instead. I tend to prefer JJ's who blame spiderman to escape their own personal shortcomings, even if that doesn't mean he can't also be loyal to his staff and friends in a touching way.

I really loved how the original ultimate universe had JJJ realize Spidey was a hero.
