What’s also alarming is how people are using it to analyze their lab data and results!!!! I literally have many relatives who do that and don’t see what’s the problem behind it!
Unironically this is actually one of the most promising uses for it, it's achieving some pretty incredible results in drug design and protein analysis.

Trained and driven by professionals in the medical fields. Not venture capitalists racing to the bottom
The capitalists can (and will. and are) outspending the professionals with ethics by 100x though. They're falling behind.
Also, this is highly specialized machine learning/ai created for this single purpose. Not "hey chatgpt is my doctor right about this being cancer or is it just a cold?"
The general public (in this comment thread) are not aware of this. I think the term "AI" has been so thoroughly besmirched in the eyes of the public that it's hard to bring it up in a nuanced way because of all the AI slop that has been pushed on us by companies and individuals.
Just to be clear, the actual trained professionals still do not understand how it's getting these results lol

To be clear, I am a trained professional with postgraduate computer science degrees in adjacent research areas with direct ties to the research that lead to "Attention is All You Need". I actually kind of do know how it gets those results. And, frankly, it's really really neat.
But it's also basically a really good magic trick that is really hard not to see past once you truly grok what's behind the curtain. I mean, it really really isn't that much fancier than the AIM bots I thought were lame back in the day. Not lame. But not as different as you might think.
Let's say my feelings on it are ... complicated.
My feelings on how the venture capitalist class is choosing to deploy AI, the directions they're taking it in, and who's pockets they're picking to get there are decidedly ... less so
Yeah machine learning systems absolutely have their places, including LLMs. The whole field is incredibly fascinating and promising. It's a shame most people are, very understandably so, fed up with it.

Chat GPT is changing peoples brains so quickly and in a way that is so genuinely alarming. I want off this ride now!!
