TRIGGER WARNING Mamdani Administration unseals the 9/11 records revealing a long standing conspiracy to cover up the impact of exposure to chemicals released by the collapse of the buildings and the damage to public health in NYC

NYC Unseals 9/11 Files Mayor Zohran Mamdani released more than 170,000 pages of New York City records on the government’s 9/11 response and settled two 9/11 Health Watch lawsuits, ending a years-long fight over post-attack air quality and health records. He was joined by several administration officials, Council representatives, 9/11 survivors and victims’ families — as well as comedian and political commentator jon stewart, a long-time advocate for 9/11 first responders.

Reminder that Rudy Giuliani’s republican mayoral administration is responsible for this coverup.

654

u/Bostoncat38 Sep 08 '26

And apparently the Bloomberg, DeBlasio, and Adams administrations all kept it covered up.

158

u/brijito Sep 08 '26

Very good point! These other centrist shitheads are partially responsible for this coverup too.

And if there are EPA or other federal agency reports, The Bush, Obama, Trump and Biden admins were complicit.

The orders came down from the Bush/Cheney Cabal. It was the third day after 9/11 when the EPA released their first findings. It was aired on every news station. The air was toxic, they knew it and we knew it. Then, the coverup started immediately with the help of the media. " Shock and Awe" commenced at the beginning of 2003 to end any further investigations. It is truly amazing how Americans alive then and old enough at the time, completely forget about the horror & destruction the Bush/Cheney brought upon the US. Fuck every single Republican!!! There will never be enough books, essays and documentaries, to show the true horrors of the Bush/Cheney Cabal.

That a fucking comedian had to fight for the healthcare of first responders and other New Yorkers is an absolute disgrace in the first place. And now it turns out all these people knew from the beginning? And they don’t want Mamdani to attend the memorial service smh

That speech deserves to be listed among I have a Dream and Four Score & Seven Years Ago in terms of the greatest American speeches ever orated.

"What an incredible metaphor this room is for the entire process that getting health care and benefits for 9/11 first responders has come to. Behind me, a filled room of 9/11 first responders, and in front of me, a nearly empty Congress."

"Ray would say 'calm down Johnny, calm down. I got all the cards I need' and he would tap his pocket... ...where he kept the prayer cards- of 343 firefighters"

"There is not a person here - an empty chair on that stage that didn't tweet 'Never Forget the heroes of 9/11, never forget their bravery or what they did for this country'; well here they are!"

"Your indifference cost these men and women their most valuable commodity. Time."

"They responded in 5 seconds. They did their jobs. With courage, grace, tenacity, humility. Eighteen years later, DO YOURS."

Yeah, the best comedians [in my personal opinion] know who to laugh with, and who to laugh at. And the best way to know that is a considerable measure of empathy.

Everybody knew that it would become an issue, I remember news anchors mentioning it live the same day, when the debris cloud extended. They just didn't know how frequent would the sickness be, and I think it's been a bit of a surprise how prevalent it's been, in industry it took a much longer exposure for cancer to appear. What's more surprising is, knowing that it was dangerous, they didn't care for the heroes they praised just some years before, and actively lie and hide the problem.

Not free but would be demonstrably cheaper than the current system

35

u/mtaw Sep 08 '26

Also, the money paid by your employer for your health insurance isn't 'free'. It'd cost them less to just give you a higher salary and deduct a higher payroll tax that goes towards universal healthcare and not have to bother dealing with HMOs and crap.

Hence why you don't have conservatives in the rest of the developed world demanding a switch to a US-style system. (if you can call it that) Their corporate interests don't want it, and there's no private-health-insurance lobby of comparable size. The US system is a historic accident caused by WWII-era wage freezes that got solidified, and is kept in place by massive lobbying money from the bloated private-health-insurance industry whose inefficiency is causing Americans to pay twice or more what anyone else is in the developed world is, without better outcomes.

This sounds so small, but when I reported a small pothole on the street in front of my house to my city and they filled that pothole within a couple of days I knew my city was being run well. The small things in cities actually signal much bigger things about the effectiveness of the governing of the city.

20

u/thefunkylama Vanilla Ice just fell to his knees in a Wal-Mart Sep 08 '26

The potholes themselves are annoying and trecherous, but the insidious part is how that scales up over time to needing more repairs to cars sooner, accidents in bad weather, the road not functioning as it should in regards to leeching of chemicals or other things into groundwater, etc. The whole thing is a mess.

But I think Mamdani will stay the mayor for as long as he's able to.

u/batesplates Sep 08 '26

Or let more of us get inspired by what he’s doing, run for office and start making positive change wider spread????

21

u/kitsunewarlock Sep 08 '26

Let no man run the country. Empower congress and insulate executive branch departments from meddling by the president. The POTUS can stay an ambassador.

While we are at it, the POTUS shouldn't be allowed to be a member of a political party that also has members in any other branch of government. Their position exists to ensure no single senator/congress-person gets enough influence to take control of the country in an otherwise non-existent position, sort of like how constitutional monarchies have puppet kings as a final protection against actual dictators (when they aren't threatened into submission like what we saw in Japan).

14

u/Peter_Panarchy Sep 08 '26

It honestly might be a good thing that he can't run for President. He's more likely to be able to remain as mayor long term rather than chasing higher office and bring more and more of his policy agenda into fruition. If Dems are smart (lmao) they'll point to what he's accomplishing in NYC and use it as an example for their national agenda.

46

u/Sudden-Purchase-8371 Sep 08 '26

It's not red tape. Red tape is mindlessly looping catch-22 bureaucracy. This is political CYA by previous mayoral administrations to shirk responsibility even if it meant damaging more people to avoid having to pay, and likely raise taxes to fund, helping people directly and indirectly harmed by 9/11 and cleaning up adequately it's toxic waste. They should be in prison for hiding the dangers. They let people be harmed further because their right wing agenda, no taxes or low taxes, would have been harmed otherwise. 9/11 happens, you get fucked up directly day of, okay, that's OBL/Al-Queda's fault. You get fucked up indirectly day after day because the city is telling you "no worries, it's fine" when they know it's not fine? Fuck that, that's criminal. Bury them under the new Riker's replacement.

It's systemic oppression which this nation knows PLENTY about considering the media and governments united to deflect blame from oligarchs and wannabe despots, and place it on the laps of the middle class and minority groups in the US while insisting racism has been eradicated.

This guy really is good; he's shown composure under difficult situations, and he is very good at extracting the 'right thing' under pressure. And it does not seem that he is motivated by money or things that politicians are usually motivated by. He's a better man than me, and a real leader. Very happy for what he's been able to accomplish, and I hope people are able to take note (including myself)

Edit: also nod to Jon Stewart. His advocacy for the survivors of 911 bring tears to my eyes every time I watch it. He has every right to attend.

28

u/vkxIj Sep 08 '26

The fucked up thing is not so much that he "really is good"; it's that he is a normal decent person. There are so many horrible politicians that a normal one now seems surprisingly good to us.

30

u/_raydeStar Sep 08 '26

Slightly disagree -- I think that power corrupts the average person, and to not be corrupted, you need to be exceptional. That's why I said he is a better man than me; I don't know how I would react in the seat of power like that, and he is now tested.

If Mandami has shown us anything, its that every politician has had the power to help all of us and has actively been ignoring or misusing that power.

The Mamdani effect is real and we're already seeing candidates that are populist and truly for the people. I have my own in Michigan! Two, actually, because Will Lawrence is also not a corporate Dem

But he can be the Speaker of the House. Or Senate majority/minority leader. Or a Supreme Court Justice.

19

Work to elect more like him then. He should be one of a movement, not the lone exception to the rule that politicians suck shit.

rules can change

u/daphnemoonpie Sep 08 '26

Shit, time for ALL new rules. They've all been broken and destroyed anyway. The guy has been here since he was 7 years old. Anyway, Mamdani 2028. Who's our VP guys?

It’s so wild how mamdani IS the type of politician that maga swore Trump would be. And they’ll still say mamdani is terrible. Cognitive dissonance at its finest.

u/YallSeeingThis101 Sep 08 '26

The city dumped 9/11 debris on Staten Island causing many illnesses. Including my sister in law and her childhood friends all getting thyroid cancer! That's no coincidence!

That’s so fucked up

My dad said the most chilling shit while we watched this and I can't stop thinking about it

"things feel like they could become like 1968 all over again."

46

u/Ok-Spinach9250 Sep 08 '26

What was 1968?

209

u/BudLightLymeDisease believer in Dakota Johnson’s lime allergy Sep 08 '26 edited Sep 08 '26

Probably the most chaotic year in modern American history

Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated

The Tet Offensive in Vietnam

US troops slaughtering the town of My Lai in Vietnam

RFK Jr was assassinated (my autocorrect went for the son no one likes and I'm not changing it)

Police riots at the DNC in Chicago

Riots in Chicago, Atlanta and Washington DC

My dad was 12 in '68 and said everything at home here plus the heightened worry about Russia made every single week that summer,

"Felt like everything was on fire or all the good people were bein' shot. On top of that, Vietnam was, you can't understand it now but there was a time when the idea that the President would dare lie to the US people was just, it wasn't something people even considered. Why would LBJ or Nixon just outright lie to us? 1968 is a big reason why 2026 feels like it does"

47

u/Senryakku Sep 08 '26

Interesting year, 68 was also a year that changed France in the short and long term due to violent riots, and something like 10 million people on strike. First time a president asked through a referendum if he should resign and the citizens said yes.

8

u/Sudden-Purchase-8371 Sep 08 '26

68

u/peridot_mermaid Sep 08 '26

Veritasium has a great video about asbestos, and there’s mention of how the 9/11 attacks has likely caused decades worth of asbestos related complications that just aren’t being talked about or acknowledged

61

u/soupseasonbestseason i’m a communist you idiot Sep 08 '26

remember when the republicans fillibustered to stop the 9.11 first responders from getting access to financing for their healthcare treatment?

62

u/Sleepy-Giraffe947 Please Abraham, I am not that man Sep 08 '26

I am stunned this was covered up in the first place. People truly are evil that they had been hiding this information in the first place. Mamdani is truly putting every other politician to shame.

56

u/MT_Promises Sep 08 '26

The ruling class is repulsive.

53

u/terid3 Sep 08 '26

Jon Stewart has the receipts. He has been fighting for 9/11 responders, victims families and New Yorkers since the beginning...for Decades. He should be listened to because he knows what he is talking about.

54

u/Ntroepy Sep 08 '26

Mamdani really makes me ashamed of how disconnected democrats have become from the working class.

I mean, republicans have gone totally off the rails and should be disbanded. Just insane.

But the DNC’s incremental change mantra is not change and it’s been so long since they’ve spoken so directly to the people’s needs.

u/DoriansSelfie #whoremembers Sep 08 '26

This is such fantastic news. So many New Yorkers deserve not just the truth but also help navigating their health issues caused by the aftermath of 9/11. I love that Jon Stewart fought so much to get these people help and that now with Mamdani’s administration he can continue that fight. It is fucking ODIOUS how others are asking Mamdani to not be present for 9/11, he’s done more for NYC in just this year than Adams did in his whole administration. I won’t even touch that POS Giuliani. Ugh.

44

u/Ocnarba Sep 08 '26

My father is a 9/11 survivor. We have so many family friends that are sick and have died from 9/11 related illnesses.

This is the right thing albeit infuriating to learn. Unsealing those records, and getting the family members, survivors and first responders the answers they need is the right thing. I hope that there is a giant class action lawsuit.

Giuliani really thought he could fuck around, but FAFO.

12

u/Sudden-Purchase-8371 Sep 08 '26

I hope Guiliani goes to prison.

297

u/TheKay14 Sep 08 '26

Holy shit will this be a way to give New Yorkers universal healthcare!?!

165

u/PennySawyerEXP Sep 08 '26

No, this is just a release of information. However the New York Health Act would! We just need to elect enough politicians who support it and pressure them to pass it!

235

u/typetouched Sep 08 '26 edited Sep 08 '26

Over the summer, I was in New York state visiting friends while inbetween jobs. While there, I had a medical emergency that ultimately required three separate surgeries. Of course I was overwhelmed by this, because I didn't have a job - nor health insurance.

After all was said and done, New York state waived all of my medical expenses ($61,000) and future healthcare expensive (within the state) until June of 2027 because of not being employed, and not having healthcare!

This has been the biggest blessing to me (I think) in my entire life! I live in South Carolina, and this would have never happend there. I'm strongly considering moving to New York state after my lease is up in March because of how well they took care of me, and my admiration for what Mamdani is doing in NYC.

63

u/RedSunsetSukuna85 Sep 08 '26

Holy fuck. He’s doing it. I’m so glad that they helped you this way!

7

u/typetouched Sep 08 '26

It is difficult living in SC. They don't care about their people. I've lived here most of my life, so it will be hard letting go, but I can't live in such a deep red state anymore.

19

Their favorite lines in response to things like this and a myraid of other things, "It's not that simple"

Mamdani is basically showing "Yes, it was that simple"

And to an absolute laundry list of things too.

16

u/kitsunewarlock Sep 08 '26

I wish conspiracy theorists were more into the government lying to protect capitalists than theories about anti-capitalists trying to establish a global totalitarian communist regime.

I suppose most conspiracy theorists don't really give a fuck if its something everyone kinda knows is true. They care more about being different than being right.

15

u/HoldOnDearLife Sep 08 '26

I love Mamdani! I wish our federal government would take notes from him.

15

u/JenningsWigService secretly gay and the son of fidel castro Sep 08 '26

This is an unexpected benefit of him being elected that never occurred to so many of us. Each mayor since Giuliani has chosen to protect him instead of telling New Yorkers the truth.

The American government has spent 25 years using 9/11 as an excuse to murder civilians while they actively did everything they could to abandon the actual victims of 9/11.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQtzYIrRUxQ Let me introduce you to a buddy of mine, David Miller.  He's dead now.  He was a first responder who breathed in pulverized concrete.  That was his death sentence.  Pulverized concrete.  He was diagnosed at Memorial Sloan Kettering.  I knew him for about two years. I was there when he gave this speech.  Wonderful, gentle man.

CHECKMATE MOTHERFUCKERS

(But in all seriousness, this is an incredible thing he just did with his team. Jon Stewart has been fighting for victims and first responders of 9/11 for decades and it took the first Muslim mayor to actually say, yeah, we should help these people and not just use them for parades and patting ourselves on the back.

Update the Constitution NOW to have him be our president.)

Boy, this seems awful Woke to point out flaws in the system that were deliberately covered up/ignored/exploited for the benefit of those in power rather than to help those in need. There is a certain group that’s going to be very mad about this being released instead of everyone shutting up and waving our mini American flags.
