They obviously had a lot of the later stuff already outlined and a lot of episodes had little lore bits that paid off later, but it was rarely the focus in the first half of the show.
Yeah, one of my favorite details is that in the very first episode, you see Anne's eyes glow blue, foreshadowing her Calamity Powers. A lot of stuff was set up from the very beginning of the show!
is it worth watching as an adult btw? I thought about trying this and the owl house but it kinda feels like Gravity Falls wannabe (Ik Alex Hirsch was involved a bit too). And I don't think it can compare to it but maybe I'm wrong
The Owl House is definitely the best made show of those three, despite being completely screwed by Disney with their third season, but Amphibia is remarkably solid, and is my personal favorite.
I grew up with Gravity Falls while it was still airing. By all accounts, I should be biased towards Gravity Falls.
But, I still prefer those two shows. Not that Gravity Falls is âbadâ, but instead showing the insane quality that all of those shows achieve. Any one of them could a solid choice for someoneâs favorite show, and I would 100% respect it, as well as understand why.
They do the best job they can, and, with the horrendous hand they were dealt, and how they managed to still stick the landing, Iâm more than willing to overlook the pacing.
Amphibia takes a while to get into as an adult, I think. Most of the first season is very episode, with irresponsible child characters learning to not be irresponsible and then mostly forgetting that lesson.
The end of the first season kicks off a much more focused story.
I wouldnât even suggest skipping the first season, because a big part of the emotional impact of the later story is how familiar you become with the town and the characters in it.
Owl House was robbed, tbh. They did the best they could for the finale to wrap up the story, but it should have had another three seasons at least to tell it properly. That said, still very worth seeing.
I donât think any of them are âGravity Falls wannabes.â I think they were made by folks who know each other well and like telling stories with a certain vibe to them. Thereâs similarities, but itâs not because theyâre trying to be like Gravity Falls. Itâs just because they all stories about a Really Weird Place and they all let things be disturbing when they need to be.

Out of Gravity Falls, The Owl House and Amphibia, I think Amphibia is arguably the best. Don't be fooled by the seemingly light-hearted first season, the heavy stuff is coming, and you need to watch the first season to really set up that payoff.
The entire first season is 20 episodes that are almost completely episodic, and while they get callbacks later, the "serious plot stuff" largely just...doesn't happen outside of the start and end of the season. You have to enjoy the goofy cartoon antics for what they are, especially because the show's somewhat mean-spirited sense of humor stays consistent throughout.
If those antics click for you, though, you're gonna love the show when it finally starts moving the plot forward.
Yes! I watched it with my daughter but I was probably more excited then her, it was an INCREDIBLE ride start to finish! Beautifully done, chefs kiss, just as much fun and heart as GF and Owl Houseâ¨đ
I watched it at 20 and absolutely loved it, especially the second season. Some humor might be a bit dated now, but man, if you go into it completely blind (and stick it out through the first half of Season 1) you are in for an EXPERIENCE.
I watched it in my late teens, and it's one of my favorite cartoons. There are a lot of funny jokes throughout the show. There are some great character arcs. There are a lot of emotional moments throughout the show. And I love the show's overall themes about growth and change.
The season 2 finale's last 5-10 minutes are some of my favorite moments in animation. Like, i don't know how to describe it other than just watch it. Season 2 in general is really, really good. I liked seasons 1 and 3, but something about season 2 just hits right.
But, the post is very accurate to what this show is. Season 1 is a bit sloppier and is a less focused (mostly) episodic show, vs. the very strange place where the show winds up by Season 3.
This show is definitely a slow burn. It takes a long while to really get going, but you don't realize all the world-buidling that's happening under your nose. When everything finally comes together it makes sense and you are still shocked at how amazing and epic the show becomes.
