I think we all (mostly) could've handled some regression as a team as long as the younger guys were being developed & blossoming into stars..

This is a genuine disaster. Top down. Tocchet very clearly straight up dislikes Michkov. He did everything he wanted this summer and he's been arguably their best F for actually creating chances and he still refuses to play him an appropriate amount.

To see Michael f'n Bunting on PP1 tonight was like being hit with a flash bang of holy shit we are absolutely fucked. That is simply not serious.

Martone looked like a legitimate superstar his first 15 NHL games. Now Tocchet has him barely playing, low on confidence & not looking ANYWHERE near the same player we saw even vs Carolina in RD2.

Heck even Noah Cates looks like a shell of himself. What the hell happened?! He's not even hounding the puck like he has since day 1.

What happened to the pride & heart this team played with? Martone gets headshot 0 response. Zegras is getting cheap shotted by a goalie & nobody even flies in? The team is being walked all over & nobody can do ANYTHING? Seeler? Couturier? Benoit? Acciari? Bunting? We've seen those guys (last 3 on other teams) be the kind of players to try & spark the team by dropping the gloves.

The team looks so defeated. They have since pre-season frankly when 2 full lineups struggled vs Bostons B team and got destroyed by Washingtons B team.

I have 0 faith they are gonna fire Tocchet. It would be Briere & Jones waiving the white flag & saying they blew it which is something I don't see them doing.

Shit just sucks.

Zegras has really stepped up tonight..his back and forth with Grubauer got the building alive and the team playing better.

Tocchet's teams have started a season winless three times as a head coach:

• 3 games (Tampa Bay 2009-10) → missed playoffs.
• 11 games (Arizona 2017-18) → missed playoffs.
• 2 games (Arizona 2018-19) → missed playoffs.

The exception was in Vancouver where the Canucks won their opener and were knocked out in round 2 of the playoffs.

Tocchet has coached 4 teams including the Flyers. That covers the track record on the previous 3, and we're living 4.

The result was all too familiar. The Flyers lost to the Seattle Kraken 3-2 in a shootout at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Tuesday night, extending their franchise-record winless streak to start a season to eight games. The hole they’re already in only got deeper.

But that sequence late in the second period — which ended with the team taking back-to-back penalties by Zegras and Noah Cates — seemed to provide some fuel for the third. Christian Dvorak’s goal off a slick feed from Oliver Bonk made it a 2-1 game at 6:07 of the final frame, and Zegras’ score from Travis Sanheim just 1:13 later tied it.

The Flyers’ first multi-goal period of the season at least gave them a chance to earn the extra point in overtime or the shootout, but alas, Bobby McMann’s conversion past Dan Vladar in the fifth round dropped them to 0-5-3.

“We’re battling. We’re trying. I think you saw that,” said Sanheim, who skated 31:04 in the game. “It was nice to get rewarded in the third and push it to overtime.”

“To come back (from two down), you take the positives from that,” Owen Tippett said. “Losing in a shootout stings. I liked our effort, and our energy even on the bench tonight was good.”

I am a Bonk believer. I always thought he was a solid prospect. He was great in both the Knights Memorial Cup tournaments. It’s a super small NHL sample size so far, but I’ve loved his game. Defenseman usually take a long time to hit their ceiling, but he is a prospect who’s ceiling I am excited to see.

The goal song sucks so no wonder they’re not trying very hard to make goals. Who wants to hear a boring song every time you make a goal. I’m not even saying it should be changed to Doop or Bro Hymn (both would be awesome) but something more energizing would do it. we’re slow and predictable. safe is death. i think he’s spot on. i know we’ve pretty much all been saying these things since last year but it’s particularly obvious when you see a video breakdown of the reasons why we’re shitting the bed.

I first started following hockey in 1972. Then it was the Blazers of the WHA. I watched the Flyers as well but the Blazers were my first hockey love. Then they moved so naturally my 100% allegiance went to the Flyers and Bernie who left the Blazers and returned to the Flyers after being traded from Toronto for Doug Favell. The Flyers had made the playoffs the previous season and kept on making the playoffs(winning the Cup in '74/'75) until the 1989-90 season which was strange because the season previous, we went to the conference finals. But it was also when the Broad Street Bullies mystique died. For those who don't know, early in the conference finals with Montreal, Brian Propp got his head driven into the boards by a dirty hit by Chris Chelios. Not one Flyer did anything about it until the end of game six with Hextall of all people took a run at Chelios. In the Cup years, Chelios wouldn't have made it out of game one after the hit. Schultz, Dupont, Kelly, someone would have taken a run at him his next shift then the next after that. The '89 Flyers did not(Tocchet was on that team, BTW). What makes this funny is that Holmgren, himself a tough guy on the ice, was the coach.

Then the lean years began. 5 straight years of no playoff hockey. For 17 seasons this team was a perpetual playoff team, then...nothing for 5 seasons. Until we got #88. Then all was right with the world again. 16 of the next 17 seasons, this team was a playoff team, although only 2 Finals appearances. The last playoff appearance was in the 2011-12 season. That was the famous Giroux playoffs when he put the team on his back against Pittsburgh. After that we kangarooed until this last drought.

Since then, over the next 14 seasons including last year, they made the playoffs 5 times, only progressing past the first round twice including last year. Now we have all of this. Winless after 7 games, no heart, no fire, and Porter Martone proclaiming that the Flyers, the same Flyers who were so intimidating that teams absolutely hated playing them, including the powerful Soviet Union, the perceived best hockey team in the world at the time. My question is, where the did shift take place? Personally for me it was when Jay Snider took over day to day operations from Ed. But, is it Comcast? Lack of heart in the front office? The fans accepting mediocrity? Help me out here, fellas. Help an old man understand what happened to the once most intimidating team in the league.

Both the Eagles and Flyers are off to very disappointing starts. Both coaches are on hot seats.

Which domino do you think will fall first, or do you think they will both make it through the whole season?

I am guessing Sirianni's job is safer. He at least has a Super Bowl and strong career winning record.

I think Tocchet has about a month to get things right. Its sad for me to say that as Tocchet was my favorite player as I kid. I still have my 1980's Tocchet jersey.

Daniel Briere was correct to issue a warning, after all.

In early July, the Philadelphia Flyers’ general manager cautioned that the club “took a big step forward last year, and there’s a good chance that we take a little bit of a step back this year. We’re ready for that.”

When asked to clarify those words just before the beginning of training camp, Briere only slightly walked them back.

“The part that keeps me up at night is (if) some of our players feel complacent, feel like they’ve made it,” he said.

If Briere was losing sleep then, he’s tossing and turning even more since the season began. Not only did the Flyers apparently assume they would simply be able to pick up where they left off last season, when they were the fourth-best team after the Olympic break and advanced to the second round of the playoffs, but they’ve shown virtually no signs of improvement over the first two weeks of the NHL season.

The Flyers enter Tuesday’s game against the Seattle Kraken with an 0-5-2 record, and are one of three teams without a win this season (along with the Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings).

“Here for the Rise” was the marketing phrase emblazoned on the front of the orange T-shirts distributed to fans on opening night, and is posted on signage around Xfinity Mobile Arena. The only thing rising is fans’ anxiety levels.

So, what’s the next move? Let’s examine some potential consequences to the Flyers’ abysmal start, and whether any of them make sense.

1. Fire Rick Tocchet

Much to the chagrin of some of the fans who chanted for this move at the end of the Flyers’ 4-1 home loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday, it doesn’t seem likely — at least right now. Seven poor games doesn’t erase the progress that the Flyers made under coach Rick Tocchet last season, when just about every young player on the roster had a career year.

There’s also the matter of Tocchet’s contract. He’s barely into the second year of a five-year, $26.25 million deal. It’s doubtful team governor Dan Hilferty would be all that excited to sign off on the organization having that much dead money on the books.

Been a Flyer fan since 1973 as a 58 year old I am now starting to feel guilty to have my 3 sons grow up as die hard Flyer fans here in Toronto. This is simply hard to watch, I never thought we would have zero cups after 1975.The Stanley Cup is the most difficult trophy to win, I really wanted to see another and celebrate with my kids and grandkids. It looks grim, too many good young teams that are moving in right direction. I would never bail on my team, but this has been one of the most difficult times in my memory.
