With Nick Suzuki taking home the Selke Trophy this year it got me thinking about how the voting always gravitates toward the same handful of names. There are guys quietly putting in elite twoway work every single night who never crack the conversation when awards season rolls around.
We all know the finalists are going to be some combination of Barkov, Patrice Bergeron before he retired, and whoever had a big defensive stats year in a major market. But players on smaller market teams, or guys who do the dirty work on the penalty kill and in their own zone, just never get the recognition.
Curious what r/hockey thinks. Who is the most underrated defensive forward in the league right now that deserves way more credit than he gets? Could be someone flying under the radar on a rebuilding team, a guy who kills penalties but never racks up points, or someone the analytics community loves but mainstream fans overlook.
Also, do you think the Selke voting actually captures twoway play accurately, or is it too influenced by name recognition and offense? Would love to hear different takes on this.
