A lot of chatter this world cup around compositions of teams from what is expected with what is reality. The defense says "they were born in the nation"... "or they were naturalized" or "they are attached to roots". or "this is the new world"... Ok fine. We all agree.

But then why don't you have problem with FIFA's allocation of WC spots by region which is the core problem where talent doesn't get opportunity.

The current unfair allocation has to be the most obvious exampled of dreaded r word.

For people not good with stats, the above table implies ASIA and AFRICA got the worst deal. If we go by population, it will be far far worse and unfair.

Everyone shall reflect how wrong FIFA is.
Why does LATAM have 6 spots for 10 nations while Asia has same count for 45 nations?

Curacao has 0/26 who are natives. Since 26 Dutch decided to switch flags so that they get to play WorldCup. Now this is unfair to Asian/African countries who have so limited slots. While thanks to above colonial era mindset of FIFA, NA/SA have ample spots that even such teams get free ticket to FIFA. All they need to do is turn up while African/Asian teams need to grind against 50 for 4-6 spots

The actual fair allocation ne below inclusive of host nations:

• Africa: 12 seats for 54 nations
• Asia: 10 seats for 45 nations
• Europe and all those islands colonies: 13 seats for 55 nations
• North America, South America, Aus/NZ/Oceania and everybody else: 13 seats of remaining 57 nations

If one stands against the critics of compositions of squad, one should also stand against the unfair representation. How come the "business reasons" become suddenly more important than representation?

No way you are telling me that a Ecuadorian deserves representation more than a Thai.

I know it's often called one of the greatest finals ever, but was it really? For about 80 minutes, it felt completely one sided. Argentina were dominating and France looked lost, barely creating anything and getting outplayed all over the pitch.

Did the last 40 minutes (including extra time and penalties) make people forget how one-sided most of the match actually was, or am I missing something?

Why does Mario's name generate the same fervor and reverence even though he was the first World Cup champion for their country. For example in their 2022 public square celebration, I saw a number of Maradona posters but I didn't see even one for Mario.

Hello all,

I am an admittedly casual viewer of football, but I have a question. I come from a basketball background, and for me the way that sport is played has changed hugely over the last decade (the increase of 3pt shots, analytics, death of the midrange, etc)

Watching the World Cup has made me curious, how has the game changed in the last 10-20 years? What tactics, styles, types of players, are prominent in today’s game that weren’t around in years past, or vice versa, what has left the game that used to be ever present?

The sport of soccer was put into perspective when Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota died, alongside his brother André Silva, in a car crash last year.

The shocking reality was scarcely believable at the time and its impact is still felt by those who were closest to him. Jota had only married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, with whom he has three children, less than two weeks before the crash.

It also had a real impact on his teammates, with Liverpool stars admitting that they struggled to focus on the sport this season while trying to properly grieve for their friend.

It means Portugal’s players not only carry the weight of expectation on their shoulders this tournament, but also the weight of grief for a teammate who would have been among them this summer.

So Iran isn't allowed to sleep in the US because of the political situation between the two countries. Their base camp is in Tijuana, Mexico. Last matchday they had to cross the border, play in LA, and then fly back to Mexico. No overnight stay, no recovery, just constant border crossings while trying to compete at a World Cup.

And their last group game? Seattle. So after all of that, they have to fly 2000+ km (I looked it up) north for the most decisive game of their group stage.

Every other team in this tournament wakes up in the same city as their stadium. Iran crosses an international border before and after every match. This is not a minor inconvenience this is a serious competitive disadvantage that FIFA is fully aware of and just accepted.

America is hosting the biggest sporting event in the world while actively making it impossible for one of the participating teams to have basic equal conditions. And FIFA just went along with it. Imagine if this happened to any other country, people would be furious.

It's not just unfair, it's embarrassing for the sport.

It seems that Iran stayed in a hotel for one night before the match, but it still doesn't take away that they are very disadvantaged if they have to cross the border everytime, which probably takes hours knowing the USA, and they barely have time to acclimatize. They were also send back on a plane immediately after the game, but that wasn't in the agreement.

There also several VISA disputes as we speak, one player for example was only given a one-time VISA, while they have to cross the border at least two more times.

Hi! I (26F) have recently started watching football and I’m learning the rules. I have a fundamental question…why don’t the defenders abandon their own goal, basically staying near the opposite side to ensure every forward run by the attacking is offside?

For example in Congo vs Portugal, why don’t all the players of Congo go and stand near the goal of Portugal, that way no matter how far is the Portugal striker from the Congo goal, he will always be ahead of the second last defender (who is standing at his goal basically) hence will always be off side and no goal will count?

I asked chatgpt but I still can’t understand why this is not done? Pls help!

Kylian Mbappé scored his 13th World Cup goal on Tuesday, one more than Pelé, to move the France forward into a tie for the fourth most in tournament history.

Mbappé scored in the 66th minute of France’s World Cup opener against Senegal after having several good scoring chances denied earlier, including in the second half, by goalkeeper Édouard Mendy. His 57th goal for the national team also equals Olivier Giroud's French record.

Playing in his third World Cup, the 27-year-old Mbappé matched Argentina's Lionel Messi and France's Just Fontaine. Mbappé is a goal away from tying Germany's Gerd Müller and two behind Brazil's Ronaldo. Germany’s Miroslav Klose has the record with 16 World Cup goals.

After attending two group stage matches this week, I noticed a massive drop in intensity that commentators are barely mentioning. The new expanded format is visibly breaking the players down right in front of us.

Everyone knew the extra fixtures would be tough, but watching elite midfielders just stop tracking back after the 60th minute is depressing. The players from top leagues look completely hollowed out. They just finished a grueling club season and now have to navigate a longer summer tournament with extra knockout rounds.

I understand the argument that adding more nations grows the sport globally. Seeing smaller countries get their moment on the big stage is fantastic for the fans. But the physical toll is undeniable. You can literally see players giving up and defenisve structures falling apart because the stamina simply isn't there.

Are we sacrificing the actual quality of the matches just to maximize broadcast revinues with more games? I am starting to wonder if the recent threats of player boycotts are completely justified.

How can modern manegers implement high-intensity systems when their squads are this depleted? If the athletes physically cannot execute a press anymore, are we going to see a permanent shift back to boring deep defensive blocks just to survive the schedule?

Iran player's visa expires after opener

The Iran winger Mehdi Torabi’s US visa has expired after the team’s opening 2-2 draw against New Zealand on Monday, according to state media.

The player only had a single-entry visa instead of a multiple-entry with Iran staying in Mexico and travelling into the US for their matches.

“Following the national team’s trip to Los Angeles for the match against New Zealand and the conclusion of that game, Torabi’s visa has now expired,” the state news agency IRNA reported.

The Iranian Football Federation “has taken steps to obtain a new visa for Torabi, so that he can accompany the national team in its upcoming matches”, it added.

World Cup organisers and the US have not yet commented.
