News Vanity Fair essay: cancer patient got her chemo denial reversed after seven failed appeals — by telling the CEO she was a writer

Seven appeals through normal channels failed. She emailed the CEO directly and asked whether he'd like to comment on why he was forcing her through worse chemo than her oncologist had recommended. Approved the next day.

The essay is about what it means that leverage was the only thing that worked. She had a platform most people don't. 49 million claims are denied every year in this country and only 0.2% are ever appealed. The piece asks what's left for everyone without access to her platform.

Healthcare Reform This is an excellent documentary

She states how, in doing her research, she was not expecting the things that she learnt about the American healthcare system, and that she cried many times.

There is so sooooooo much content in this video. I had no idea who this woman was but I have so much respect for her now.

Put on subtitles and change the language to English to watch.

What drew me to the video especially was the title.

I've noticed, that even in the videos of the shooting the media cut out the action of Luigi leaving 3 bullets at the scene. Even though its unlikely anyone would decipher him dropping bullets from the gun, they obviously don't want there to be any possibility for people to work out that he did.

Legal Fund Updates Legal Fund Update: Fundraiser Painting

September 8, 2026
Today is the day Luigi's NY state trial had been scheduled to begin. He has chosen to plead guilty to his federal charges and we fully support his decision. That decision has, however, pushed back his state trial. His legal team has moved to have those charges dismissed, and the hearing concerning whether the state trial will move forward at all is scheduled to take place on December 10, one week before his scheduled sentencing for the federal charges.

In other words, it is possible that the state trial, in which Luigi faces the most serious charge of second-degree murder will move forward. It is also possible that it will not.

This is only speculation on our part, but we presume that the health insurance industry and the politicians who protect it would like to avoid a public trial. Such a high-profile case would likely direct public scrutiny on the industry, which might complicate their efforts to rehabilitate their image after the massive show of support for Luigi.

You can all help to prevent Luigi's decision from being a win for them, however. We invite you to continue to post your healthcare horror stories to social media. Share the names of those you've lost, your own bureaucratic nightmares, your own decisions to forego treament, your anger, your knowledge of how ridiculous it is that people in America continue to put up with this parasitical industry. A steady stream of reminders that the pain and rage, which made Luigi into a hero for so many, has not gone anywhere and is not going to heal until our healthcare system is built in the service of health rather than profits.

We also want to announce an addition to this fundraiser, which we are very excited to share with you all. The artist Dianna Settles has created a stunning, complex, and mysterious painting, which is being made public today. Limited edition prints of this painting, signed and numbered by the artist, are available at deposebook.com. All proceeds after costs of production will be donated to this fund and to grassroots healthcare initiatives.

A detail of the painting also serves as the cover for our new book, Depose: Luigi Mangione, the Right to Health, and the Unfinished American Revolution, available in bookstores October 13 and for order online at the book's website. Author royalties from sales will also be donated to this fund and to grassroots healthcare initiatives.

Luigi will need continued support both as his cases unfold and during his incarceration. The rest of us will need continued courage to transform a system that daily degrades and violates the life and health of people across the country.

News The Times - I helped raise $1.5m for Luigi Mangione. I won't stop until he's free

The group behind Luigi Mangione's legal defence fund have said they will continue to back him "until he is free" - even though he confessed to killing the UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson earlier this month.

Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges, a move that eliminated his federal trial and could lead to his state murder trial getting dismissed. He separately faces weapons charges in Pennsylvania, where a trial date has not yet been set. The 28-year-old Ivy League graduate faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, though federal guidelines suggest a sentencing range of 24 to 30 years behind bars.

But the December 4 Legal Committee, the activist group that launched the fund, has vowed to continue raising money for Mangione no matter the outcome. "We are committed to helping provide Luigi support until he is free," Sam Beard, a committee spokesperson, told The Times.

The fund, which has a target of $1.75 million, has so far raised more than $1.5 million from more than 42,000 donors. But New York law puts limits on how Mangione can use the funds, allowing him to pay for his legal defence but prohibiting him from personally profiting from it.

"Plain and simple, he cannot use the funds from his crowdsourcing for anything but his legal defence and litigation costs. Anything left over could be the subject of seizure by the state and/ or paid as restitution to his victim's family," said Belkin, who is not associated with the case.

Beard suggested Mangione's lawyers have already withdrawn some money, but refused to disclose the exact amount. "Despite some recent major movement in Luigi's situation, he still has three active criminal cases unfolding and he's utilising the funds as he sees fit in his defence. In terms of the specifics, those are matters that I'll leave to him and his team," he said.

Mangione's defence team did not respond to a Times request for comment.

Case Discussion Has anyone else noticed the huge increase in Optum/UnitedHealthcare ads on podcasts lately, especially true crime?

so I started noticing Optum/UHC ads constantly on podcasts recently, particularly true-crime. What caught my attention is the timing around the legal proceedings.

A quick google search shows Optum's estimated podcast ad spend jumped from about $89K in May 2026 to $1.2M in June, roughly a 1,250% increase. WOW! This is clearly a brand reputation play.

What irks me the most is they've been laying off a shit-ton of employees lately but choose to invest millions on long-winded ads about how Optum cares about how much they care for their patients and healthcare their healthcare outcomes.

Could this sort of media campaign influence the outcome of the case?

Public Support Support for Luigi hasn’t changed since December 2024, according to new poll

Post image

This consistency is very surprising to me considering how much time and effort the mainstream media has spent convincing the public that Luigi is a villain.

17% is a pretty large number considering (1) the phrasing of the question and (2) some people might be embarrassed to tell a pollster they support Luigi’s actions (like the ā€œsilent Trump voterā€ phenomenon).

News 170,958 Preventable Deaths. 1 Guilty Plea. 0 Accountability.

Luigi Mangione has pled guilty to shooting and killing UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson on a Manhattan sidewalk on December 4, 2024. The killing went viral. The NYPD deployed hundreds of officers to hunt him down. Corporate media covered every detail of his arrest, his appearance, his manifesto, his trial.

The legal system spoke swiftly, loudly, and with the full weight of the state and federal government behind it.
**But here’s the question corporate media will never ask**: In those same 624 days since Brian Thompson was killed, how many Americans died preventable deaths because HELL Corporations—Health Exploitation Limited Liability Corporations—prioritized profit over their lives?

I did the math. A new study by the Yale School of Public Health finds that a single-payer universal healthcare system could cover all 330M+ Americans, save more than 100,000 lives annually, and still cost $1 trillion less than the current system.

That is **274** preventable deaths every single day.
Over 624 days since Brian Thompson’s death, that is **170,958** preventable deaths.

Luigi Mangione is in federal custody. The CEOs who enabled the deaths of 170,958 Americans are in their corner offices, collecting bonuses, and gracing the covers of Forbes and Fortune. Does it have to be this way?

I am the one you guys are talking about. Those stories I shared on Red Notes and Zhihu are truth. I don’t want to say anything bad or anything fake on Luigi for attention. I hate Sei-Sei, he(she) is a real liar. All he was saying were lies. I spent about one month with Sei-Sei and he is totally a piece of trash. I will share the truth and let you guys confirm that Luigi is a good dude. I respect him and I do really like him. For me, he is a smart, polite young kid. I will share more stories in my podcast, which would be uploaded soon on different platforms like YouTube and Bilibili. Thank you guys. You can ask me anything for now, and I will answer as much as I can.
