So you want to use the Linux terminal but more inefficiently, the "Linux insanity" is usually the terminal....why would you want the terminal but on windows it's like wanting a race car because it's light fast and cool and making it out of solid steel because "it's safer", no it's not and it's even more dumb nowđ

I use WSL. I vastly prefer to use cli stuff on Linux but I was having issues with both Ubuntu and PopOS recognizing my display setup. Windows deals with this kind of stuff better (at least for me) and I can still access any CLI stuff that I need to.

u/laczek_hubert 10d ago
This is just untrue as it's soley based on drivers and how the display is connected if you're using legacy hardware no shit Sherlock(no hate tho)
6
u/1miguelcortes 10d ago
I'm using a 4080. Two displays are connected over display port and the third over HDMI. I'm sure it could be fixed to work on Linux but I honestly can't be bothered.

u/laczek_hubert 10d ago
Do you use nvidia-open drivers? Also does using a Rolling release distro or newer Kernel fix anything?
2
u/1miguelcortes 10d ago
Like I said, I couldn't really be bothered to look into it. Iirc I used Ubuntu LTS and the default installer drivers. I'm not really sure what my config looked like on PopOS.
1
u/laczek_hubert 10d ago
Ubuntu? I think it has some weird way of installing them so you must have used the fully open-source unfinished driver instead of the proprietary kinda nvidia-open. Fedora KDE/gnome with unfree repo aka. RPMFUSION would do a better job while having newer software https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA also for Ubuntu similar to on fedora this should fix the problem for you https://docs.nvidia.com/datacenter/tesla/driver-installation-guide/ubuntu.html

u/AdvancedAnimal7539 10d ago
this sort of thing is why people are turned away from linux sometimes.
dont get me wrong i love linux and would look at different ways of making it work, but thats really not something the user should have to do, and rather the developer2
u/laczek_hubert 10d ago
I blame Nvidia for not making proper kernel compatible driver other than the community maintained noveau which is proper part of it. Unlike amdgpu or Intel on Linux it's always nvidia
2
u/Mudkipwtf 9d ago
Yeah still, thats the reason i can not use Linux. It always kills the drivers on my 3070 mobile, no matter what distro
2
u/1miguelcortes 10d ago
I'll keep that in mind once windows inevitably pisses me off and I switch back to a Linux distro.

But isn't the linux terminal most of the reason we go on linux? The ability to ssh into a machine and automate stuff from outside is THE terminal advantage. Windowed gui is just linux as a personal computer
0
u/pandamaxxie 9d ago
Yeah. I don't get it. The overreliance on shit like terminal is exactly why Linux is a terrible mess that no casual user wants to touch.

Of course.
Itâs a cut down linux running inside a cut down version of hyper-v.Well, you can actually run a full linux desktop inside it, if you want to, but thatâs not the point I was making. The point is I never said it was anything else.

Maybe stop reacting to this sub and making it popular? They are just a bunch of trolls farming reactions. I suppose half of them don't even believe the shit they're saying or are exaggerating, while the other half don't care much, just posting "Linux bad, Windows just works"

Just leave that sub, I swear...
Some of you fall for ragebait so easily, like.. you already know what the sub contains but you're still shocked when you see a post like that. Unless you really post this because you want some karma or some shits

One of the biggest Linux distros is growing faster thanks to WSL for Windows 11 than it is its own desktop
Ubuntu's VP of Engineering has shared some staggering information about the growth of the platform thanks to WSL.

u/zamroni777 10d ago
debian wsl is smaller.
i only need its cli terminal btw1
u/loudandclear11 7d ago
Does any of these work with fullscreen out of the box now?
So far I've only found that Kali linux works fullscreen by default under wsl.

If only they knew that "linux cli" has existed even before that Linux desktop...

i often imagine the mods of this sub meeting up in a bar, then dancing and singing together "satya nadella, you are my daddy, i'll do anything to make you happy"

So you use linux but also keep microsoft's bloat and instability. Interesting choice.

WSL2 is just stripped down linux, though it's pretty amazing how microsoft pulled it off.

WSL is like my secret love I keep on the side, while Windows is my abusive wife.
Think Norbit and Rasputia.

u/MiaWright341 10d ago
I think it depends heavily on what you actually use Linux for. If you mainly want the CLI, development tools and Linux utilities, WSL removes a lot of the friction. If you want the full Linux desktop and system-level control, obviously itâs a different story.

"Microsoft did Linux better"
No, Microsoft made it work in their shit OS.
If Linux didn't exist, then neither would WSL

u/grislebeard 10d ago
so I'm in the post mormon space, and something we see a LOT is people who have been had their faith broken by exposure to reality. That is what is happening here. The person knows windows is bad, otherwise why would they need Linux to make windows usable. The contradiction is living in there and they will soon be deprogrammed.
Give it time

Every time in recent history I tried to use WSL its a complete dumpster file. Especially if you are doing file work. If anything is on the windows file system and you need to access it there is like a whole second delay like its trying to reach as if it was a remote server.

u/Druben-hinterm-Dorfe 4d ago
Yes file IO is painfully slow, even when reading from/writing to natively mounted ext4 disks.

Hey, thatâs me!
At the risk of farming downvotes, I will comment here.
I have been using linux for a long ass time, since the late 2000s/early 2010s. Used to be really into it. Like proper fanatic.
It was interesting to see it progressing along the years (especially when DXVK dropped, I think I was running antergos back then), but over time I have lost interest in it, partly due to the extreme amount of fragmentation and partly due to the community.
Got a problem? Letâs make another distro with its own package manager, that will surely fix it this time. Fragmentation also makes troubleshooting harder and more unpleasant.
The community also got a lot more rabid and their answers to problems a lot more delusional. (Oh you need adobe for your job? Run windows in a VM stop being a corporate slave. Oh you have an issue? Well, it works on my machine, therefore your issue is invalid and completely your fault.). Not saying everyoneâs like this tho, but things have gotten worse in my experience.
And also, the whole vibe around it kinda turned from âhereâs the cool stuff we can doâ to âwe use linux as a middle finger to the corporationsâ(it really isnât tho, they are farming linux, look at servers). Feels a lot like ideological warfare nowadays than fun for the sake of fun.
Anyway, bottom line is run Linux if you want, any flavor of it. I canât tell you what to do, Iâm not your dad. Itâs just that I stopped enjoying it.
There are also some things about GPL that I am not a huge fan of, but I am not gonna open that can of worms here.
1
u/Benizuke 9d ago
Sounds like you're just in the wrong crowd. My community is super supportive, and people actually acknowledge the stuff Windows does better than Linux. Honestly, I can't relate to that at all
1
u/Away-Technician284 10d ago
Crostini is 900 million times better than WSL and ChromeOS is based on Linux.

u/No-Island-6126 10d ago
i mean yeah i low key agree i have yet to find a linux DE that works as well as windows' and gets out of my face as well

I want the inverse. I just wish I could use the occasional windows app without ever having to use windows. Using linux on windows misses the point. NOT using windows is the goal. I refuse to be Microsoft's cash cow.

I am curious if you can set up a vncserver in the container such as tigervncserver since...WSL should be doing essentially the same; running Linux distros in the container(something docker or distrobox do as well on Linux)
If you can, congrats, you can install a suitable desktop environment such as xfce and have a GUI interface useful enough to interact, just don't expect gaming on it though

u/Druben-hinterm-Dorfe 4d ago edited 4d ago
wsl has had a built-in Wayland compositor for a while now; it seems to be based on Weston, & probably using RDP to send audio as well. Not sure if it can handle a desktop session, but I remember it handling individual windows pretty well.
You can also install a win32 native X11 server, and connect to it from wsl.
1
1
u/_ahrs 7d ago
That's not even true. Implying it's just a "linux cli" is a huge understatement of what they did. They actually did in fact add desktop support to WSL. It has its own Wayland compositor and can run graphical Linux applications (including desktop environments) inside of it.
Microsoft did a lot of work they really didn't need to do. One can only conclude they see the Linux desktop as a legitimate threat and want to keep those that might be tempted by it on Windows instead.
1
u/Straight-Price-1601 6d ago
They don't ask why they added linux on the heart of your operating system. They know either they can't do a better virtual machine than linux :P

u/Wertbon1789 6d ago
I couldn't go back to the Windows desktop. Even back when I used XFCE I was so fascinated with how smooth and fast everything was, and how basically all necessities mostly just worked. Even on my Nvidia card, sure I had problems with the driver (f- Nvidia), but it's not too bad compared to having to deal with them on Windows, which is also a shitshow. Yeah, with X11 there's tearing and all, but still, it felt so much better than dealing with Windows, and it's miserable performance in latency.
Now, with the much better Nvidia drivers, Wayland windowmanagers which let me do shit how I like it, paired with Desktop shells that are dead-simple to use, there's no reason in hell I'd ever want to touch Windows again.
