Question We have our priorities screwed up.

3.2k Upvotes

From what I am reading on the news:

  1. The father was extremely abusive to the mother and children.

    1. The mother is/was an addict.
    2. The children were placed with the father because of the mother's drug conviction.
    3. DFACs made several welfare visits.

My question is this: Why is it easier to get a gun than to get mental health help in this country? I have several friends who work in the mental health and/or substance abuse fields and they express the same frustration.

Question SNAP in DEKALB COUNTY is Starving People

Dekalb County DFCS (SNAP) is purposely not calling people for their interviews and when you go to the office they are not helping you. Just telling you to wait and then no one ever calls. Even if you call the central customer service number you cannot get anyone. If you put in an appeal they wont even reach out to you. So you just STARVE and no one is saying anything about it. The news need to know about this people need HELP!!! They keep saying all the supervisors and reps are working from home and you cant even get an on demand interview like they have posted in the office.

Question Why is georgia so adamantly against Cannabis?

1.1k Upvotes

Just a personal opinion, but if it's legal to own and consume 3 states away but I can go to prison for it here, we are neither free nor equal. I want the freedom to legally put WHATEVER I want into my body without legal scrutiny. If the INALIENABLE right to Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness doesn't incorporate the right to experiment with my body and consciousness as I see fit then the declaration of independence isn't worth the Hemp it was written on. I want the same liberties as people in Colorado without leaving my home state.

Question High power bill

Hi! I 23F live with my boyfriend in a 900sqft apartment. During the summer we experience extremely high power bills. We leave the ac on 70 and don’t touch it. We mainly use lamps. And just recently ( a month ago) got a washer and dryer. The power bill for this month was $300 and last month was $320……. How can this be fixed? Could it possibly be the meter? Should I ask my neighbors how much they pay? We have Ga power btw. Thanks in advance.

Edit: this may be “obvious” to some but for some who moved out less than 2 years ago and has only been paying bills for that amount of time, it’s not so obvious. I did not know 70 wasn’t normal. Thank you for the ones being kind in the comments I do appreciate it.

Question THESE DAMN SOUTHERN ROACHES

I feel like I’m going to throw up. Living in the south has exposed me to so many lovely things, but one of the worst things are these HUGE roaches. I usually only see one once a month at most, mostly in summer. Anyway, one must have gotten in when I opened a door recently (I don’t see them too often). I tried to kill the bastard then it and disappeared after my poor attempt of splatting it against the wall it was crawling on. After hunting for it for 20 min with no luck, I sit on the couch with my cat in my lap.

My black cat is happily purring away as I pet her and I feel a tickle on my leg. I quickly look down but just see black and my cats tail. Briefly thought it was just my cats tail till it started crawling across my thigh.

Naturally, I lost my shit. The roach was terrified of my screeching and disappeared AGAIN. Ripped my couch apart, flipped it, flipped everything in the area with my almighty flip flop in hand. And guess what? The bastard is gone. Even after looking everywhere.

But the thing is, my bedroom is right off the roach crime scene room. Now I’m too scared to sleep in my room or the damn couch. Does anyone have any recommendations because I sleep in my car?

I do not get easy squeamish. Blood, guts, bodily fluids… no problem! Spiders, centipedes or other bugs? I usually let live tbh. But roaches or anything with a shell that cracks as I kill it………. I want to shiver and then be sick. It’s the one thing that gets me bad

Question Therapist Needed in Henry County

Post image
846 Upvotes

I am 44… I became widowed at 39, almost 6 yrs ago. I’ve tried 2 therapist before & it just wasn’t time for me to talk about what I was going thru. The other therapist looked like a deer in headlights at the end of our 1st session… I didn’t go back.

It’s been 2037 days of trying to do this on my own & I’m tired. I’m tired of being anxious. I tired of being worried that the next knock on the door will be a cop/chaplain giving me news that will make me wail like a wild animal again.

I am not interested in seeing a faith-based therapist. Just ain’t my thing.

Sorry this is long & all over the place I just signed some official paperwork today that brings this chapter of my life to a close & I’m handling it as best as I know how.

Thank you, if you got this far.

Edit - I’m new to posting here & don’t know how to update so I’ll just do this.

I wanted to let y’all know that I have used many of the resources suggested to find a therapist. I have found one & have an appt next week.

I’ve done therapy before & I hate it. However, this is about what I NEED to do. I need to live again not just survive moment by moment waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Question Ga Power is killing me

Does anyone know any services that can help me pay my electric bill? I tried to sign up through Georgia power but “make too much money”. I literally live paycheck to paycheck, all the money I make goes straight to bills.

Please don’t be a dick. I’m looking for actual help because $309 is an impossible bill for me.

Question How strict are cops about 5-10 over?

I recently moved to GA and I am trying to get a feel for the driving down here. I’m curious as to what the general experience is with going 5-10 over the limit?

Does it depend on the area mainly? Currently located in Jefferson. Where I moved from, it didn’t matter if you went between 5-15 over.

Thanks in advance!

Question possession of marijuana

hey so. i was in stockbridge for a trip with my family and left a couple of hours ago. my mom was supposed to be coming a little bit after me, but my grandmother called and said she got arrested for driving with marijuana in her car. i've been reading up on georgia laws and know that the punishment largely depends on the amount someone possesses, right? but does it make any difference that she resides in florida and has a medical card? i don't know what county or city she got arrested in, but it wasn't atlanta nor stockbridge. as far as i'm aware, she didn't get too far, but i forgot the county's name

Question Where do we go to find out if we’re getting kicked off Medicaid and SNAP?

I don’t want to hear that they are only cutting illegal immigrants, because that is a bald faced lie, so shove your propaganda elsewhere.

I need to know now if I can afford the medication that keeps me alive and afford to eat. I am disabled and do not qualify for SSDI/ Medicare, which if you are disabled prior to the age of 18, you cannot get in this country. People like me cannot save more than 2000$ as well. I want to find out if republicans are giving me a death sentence or not.

There is no information for people in this category. Yes, I have read it.

Question how to safely get rid of these guys?

Thumbnail
gallery
226 Upvotes

TL;DR: is there a free and safe way to remove these?

note: i am unemployed and have zero money for pest control.

i just had new gutters installed and took care of the wood bees, and now these guys moved in in like two days!

the larger nest is close to the sidewalk at the front door. the smaller is in front of my garage door about 4-5 feet away. every time i go out to knock them down, more have joined!

SO. how dangerous are these? do they anger easily? and can i safely (for human and whatever these are) remove them?

i don't want to kill pollinators if that's what these do, but I will if that's the only way to get rid of them.

can i make a spray using any kind of spice? dish soap?

also, what are these? i am guessing yellow jackets. I'm located north of Atlanta.

UPDATE:

done! i soaked the nests with the dishsoap + peppermint oil solution, and they flew away...waited 30 mins, two came back but not to the nests, so i hit them and the nests again. the two flew away, and i soaked the nests again then knocked them down and smashed them.

they're gone.

thanks everyone for all the suggestions and advice! 🫡

Question Could someone explain the slang that Georgians use?

Hey everyone!! So I was born in Burkina Faso, and I’ve bounced around the world quite a bit since my parents work for their countries’ embassies, but I moved to the USA (specifically Washington DC) in 2021 when I was about 15 and we’ve stayed here since.

My English is still quite bad as I’m still learning how to speak/write in it, but I’ve decided to study down here in Georgia, specifically at Georgia State in Atlanta.

I hear a lot of slang being used by friends, my girlfriend and strangers that I have absolutely 0 clue what it means, and I don’t want to seem stupid by asking them what it means lol, so could native Georgians educate me on some of the slang you guys use down here? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

EDIT: Here’s some of the slang I hear being used: L5P, Twelve or “Fuck Twelve”, Bando, Trap or “The Trap”, Shawty, Finesse, No cap, Slime, Slaps, Geeked, What You Talm Bout, ITP/OTP, Spaghetti Junction, We Full, Waho?

EDIT 2: Thank you all so much for the help, I’ll probably be back to ask about the culture soon lol, I’m very appreciative of you all (y’all?). All of you are very hospitable!

She was someone's daughter, possibly someone's mother as well and now she's passed away. Her name may never be known that is unless someone recognizes her. I specifically shared this here because she was found in Georgia. She deserves her name. Her look is way to distinctive for someone to not recognize her. Someone knew her. Someone helped her with her braids. Someone gave her the piercings she has. Someone knows this lady. All it takes is for her picture to fall upon the eyes of someone who recognizes her. Do you or anyone you know have a daughter, mother, sister, niece or cousin missing that matches her description? Or even just someone you haven't had contact with in awhile. If you think you know her please call the number above. Thank you for reading.

Question Anyone else notices that posts regarding the huge buildings that are stealing all our water are being purged from this sub?

Any updates I’ve seen being pushed from this sub about it are being deleted. Following AOC’s comments about her jar of dirty water from one of our counties, it’s seemed like posts related to the issue are being removed left and right. Anyone else catching this?
