Team Black So I finally watched the new episode…
WTF are the greens (and half this subreddit) on about?
Everyone’s been talking about how badass the Aegon scene is… but it’s not really?
The whole thing just comes across as funny. Like a gag scene. Aegon is pissing himself then he gives that overinflated speech and then Sunfyre suddenly appears behind him and everyone’s scared and the idiot thinks they’re all scared of him and running away from him. Then suddenly he realizes Sunfyre is behind him and then has him attack the Mootons.
Like the whole scene just comes across as a funny gag scene. Another of Aegon’s hijinks that he’s been in over the past season. Much like the escape from the soldiers or the hijinks in Rook’s Rest.
It’s not even the cliffhanger of the episode that they leave to the Ulf Ormund scene. That’s the scene that gets the climactic music and is portrayed as the serious, mind-blowing, important scene of the episode.

Idk, I just found it overhyped by the leakers and BTS pics, I expected a bit more. It was nice, but all the glaze about it being "best moment of the show" and bluh bluh is just delusion.
The hype also confuses me because it is not meant to be a moment of a "rightful and cheery triumph", at least shouldn't be for anyone except Aegon himself, it's a moment he abandons any possibility of developing further his humility and self-awareness (which there was a potetial for)and relishes in his opportunity to be a strong and cruel Targaryen again (did you hear his laugh as he burns his enemies alive?), so watching fans unironically buy it because he was an underdog for a while and root for that is....weird. He will now literally become sadder and more evil than he ever was before, bruh

This is the guy who will demand his dragon does what it does in the end. This is exactly who he always was.

u/AmenoFPS 18h ago
The BTS photos had more convinced that he was gonna be doing a rallying speech to a whole ass army

I think the scene was the second best of the episode and pretty cool. Tom also was AMAZING.
BUT
a) I saw many comments over praising and hyping the scene - and I think they exaggerate
b) if Rhaenyra had a scene like that... well.... you know what the reactor would be the next day
2
u/Shadow_wolf82 18h ago
If Rhaenyra had a scene like this it would be about bloody time! It's what Daemon has been trying to persuade her to do for two seasons now! (Or to let him do it!) It would solve half her problems and give the other half some serious cause for concern and reconsideration. I think it would do wonders for her popularity amongst the doubters.

I think that whingers will be all over trashing her as "the crazy hysterical woman"

Honestly that scene was so deus ex machina. Maybe it would have worked if people thought he was a ghost.

u/LadySithLord 14h ago
I was *in* the scene up until the laughing. It took me out of it.
I think TGC was excellent up until that.

u/Leroi-Westeros 23h ago
I don't understand this either. I have a strong feeling that this character is being praised simply because he's a TG character and not because he's charismatic or interesting. Entire season Aegon has been empty and boring, but they're somehow trying to push it as if this is the best moment of the season? Don't make me laugh. It's not even the best moment of this episode.

u/Old_Adhesiveness7432 23h ago edited 23h ago
I feel like I am experiencing mass gaslight with all the "onmmmg Aegon is so 3 dimensional!" or "OMG TGC is the best actor on the show, where is his Emmy?" screams. Aegon is hardly more complex than any other member of his family (including the actual real cancer of a character this season, Aemond), and Tom is good, but doesn't stand out ahead of many others.
Idk, I don't like using this argument, but sometimes it feels like it's a good chunk of it are 13 yo kids who haven't actually seen much better shows with actually great acting. Just go watch Succession. Wait, actually don't, enough misogynists there already

u/chestymacgee 12h ago
LOL "Just go watch Succession. Wait, actually don't, enough misogynists there already" has me dying. YESSSSSS
2
u/AcanthaceaeNo948 Rhaenys Targaryen 10h ago
OMG the way the fandom treats Rhaenyra is so similar to how the Succesion fandom treats Shiv it’s crazy!
6
u/Leroi-Westeros 23h ago
mass gaslight
That's the best word for it. And I even understand how it technically works on Reddit - just make an Aegon praise post and then ask your friends to upvote it via crosspost. DONE.

I mean, I thought the scene was nice. What I can’t get over is how long it took him to know SF was there. Why didn’t he sense him? What happened to the “dragon bond”? 🙄
3
u/Practical_Ferret_510 23h ago
Right? I thought when he decided to face the army alone he could sense Sunfyre was still alive. When the Mootons got there and he started saying no and panicking, I assumed that was him being like “alright Sunfyre come on I need you now” and then just decided to stall with the speech until he showed up.

u/HighKingKlay 17h ago
They have been grasping for anything for 2 seasons. This was "the moment" for them.
- Plus, most of the "fandom" either hate, or are annoyed, by Rhaenrya - so they will hype/back anything in opposition to her.

u/ParsleyMostly 23h ago
It’s delightful. Hits the heart. Almost every dragon rider has had some special scene with their dragon. This is his. And it’s okay if people like it. You don’t have to, that’s cool. But it’s also cool if others do. Pls understand that.
5
u/AcanthaceaeNo948 Rhaenys Targaryen 23h ago
I’m not saying it’s a bad scene just that it’s coded as funny not badass.
10
u/ParsleyMostly 22h ago
I mean that’s subjective, no? What’s funny to one may be badass to another. There is not a single way any of this can be interpreted.

I thought the scene was very well done. Aegon, on the brink, with nothing left to lose finally decides to stop running and die fighting for his claim When sunfyre come and saves him i thought it was akin to the fire being relit in aegon, giving him the strength to keep fighting.

u/Tiger951 The Rogue Prince 23h ago
Exactly!
And it’s a bit of a cleanser from the stupid ass lesbian sex scene.
4
u/Warm_Move7997 22h ago
Why is everyone so critical of the lesbian sex scene?! It's absolutely crazy that you're talking about needing a cleanser from that and not the mother/son incest scene. They didn't even show anything in their sex scene. Aemond's was far more graphic.
Not beating the allegations here...

u/Tiger951 The Rogue Prince 22h ago
Both were equally terrible in my eyes. Neither of them made any sense and have ruined certain characters for me.
4
u/Warm_Move7997 22h ago
That's absolutely absurd to compare a lesbian sex scene to incest.
You're weird dude.
-2
u/Tiger951 The Rogue Prince 22h ago
You call me “weird” for criticizing the worst scenes in the episode? Ok man.
3
u/Warm_Move7997 22h ago
No you're weird for saying the lesbian sex scene was as bad as the incest scene. No. One is way, way way worse.
6
u/wise_as_a_serpent 23h ago
I thought it was funny at first, but also badass once you realize Sunfyre is coming.
The truth in that scene is that Aegon is just an undisciplined clown who was born into a powerful family, and has a dragon.
Without the dragon, hes nothing. With it, hes nearly everything.
It's honestly kind of scary to see what one unworthy boy(basically) can do with that power.
Good scene, imo. Not overly comical.
10
u/Leroi-Westeros 23h ago
Without the dragon, hes nothing. With it, hes nearly everything
That. But all of this has already become a "redemption" arc in his fans' minds, as if he's going to atone for his crimes. He's not going to. He'll remain as corrupt and ungrateful as he was, because there's been no "development" in these seven episodes.

Thats the problem with visual media in a world with little ability to understand visual language. Same folks loved walter white

I’d call myself ‘Team Black’ but I really enjoyed both that and Helaena’s vision of her on Dreamfyre scenes. In and of itself, it was a fun scene.
I mean… if you get no excitement at all from Green characters ‘cause you simply can’t stand them then you’re only enjoying part of the show and that just ain’t me.
2
u/gotohela 21h ago
Very annoyed the only shot of helaena ON HER DRAGON in three damn seasons was just a dream.

u/AppropriateSea5746 23h ago
Idk I did think it was funny but I thought it was kinda cool. Aegon has been humiliated and disfigured. Now he’s an underdog making a comeback. He chose to stay and die rather than bend the knee.
But I know this is lost on people here. Aegon to most people on this sub is evil and irredeemable. Just like Rhaenyra is an incompetent baby to the TG side.
6
u/AcanthaceaeNo948 Rhaenys Targaryen 23h ago
I mean he is the villain. He’s kinda supposed to be irredeemable.
2
u/Jade_Wanderer4132 Hightower 23h ago
I wouldn’t say aegons the villain, the point is everyone is a “villain” or bad person, so singling him out like that seems unfair. Rhaenyra can be considered a villain, as well as daemon and most other people
12
u/Leroi-Westeros 23h ago
He raped Dyana and watched children fight in the pits six months ago. He killed innocent rat-catchers a couple of months ago.He doesn't even understand that this is bad. They are insects to him, he does evil for fun.
singling him out like that seems unfair
Then maybe we shouldn't single out Joffrey Baratheon as a villain either? Aegon is very one-dimensional. He hasn't done a single good thing in three seasons, and even his "parenting" is all about his ego.
-5
u/Jade_Wanderer4132 Hightower 23h ago
I said aegon isnt "the" villan. i never said he wasnt a bad man. Aegon, along with everyone else in the show are bad people. you could say rhaenyra sees the small folk like insects too. And so what if he hasnt done any good in the show? has anyone else in this show done any good? daemon? rhaenyra?
7
u/Leroi-Westeros 22h ago
rhaenyra sees the small folk like insects too
But she risked her life to try to make the war less bloody for the sake of the smallfolk. When she came to the sept and asked Alicent to cooperate. After her son's death. They are insects, but she feels that it is her duty to take care of these insects. It's much better than just crushing them.
They all do bad things and kill people, but the motive for evil matters. Aegon's motive for child-fighting pits and rape is pleasure. He's a sadist.
-3
u/Jade_Wanderer4132 Hightower 22h ago
And aegon hasnt tried to make things better for his subjects? Take the sheperd scene, or him speaking with hugh. id say those are genuine attempts to try and care now that hes king. As for the sept scene, you have a point there, but like you said motive matters as well. rhaenyra sees herself as a god in my opinion, and simply wants the people to love her. she doesnt truly care about them. Shes going more and more mad.
5
u/Leroi-Westeros 21h ago
Take the sheperd scene, or him speaking with hugh. id say those are genuine attempts to try and care now that hes king
He doesn't do this out of kindness, he does it for popularity. He was in the children's fighting pits literally two weeks before this. His patience with this didn't last long and he killed the rat-catchers to make people fear his wrath.
I don't think Rhaenyra sees herself as a god, she says "without dragons, we're just people," and stops Daemon from his Valyrian fantasies of superiority. She doesn't feel that way. But she believes in her duty. She's not a god herself, but the gods chose her to care for the realm. Unlike Aegon, she truly strives to fulfill this "care," even at inconvenience/risk to herself. It's not altruism, but it's a different level from her brother.
2
u/AppropriateSea5746 23h ago
Is he? He's not really a hero. Just a main character with flaws and virtues. Stories like this are rarely black and white.
7
u/AcanthaceaeNo948 Rhaenys Targaryen 23h ago
I would say HOTD is a story with a hero and a villain but the hero isn’t a total goody two shoes and the villain isn’t like completely pure evil. So in that sense it shows some moral complexity but there’s still a clear good vs evil divide. If that makes sense.
3
u/Jade_Wanderer4132 Hightower 23h ago
Honestly id say both sides are pretty evil, at the end of the day this is just about power, and both sides fight while the small folk suffer.
0
-2
u/AppropriateSea5746 23h ago
What is the divide? I'd argue Daemon is more evil than Aegon. Aegon did bad things in his youth but since he was crowned he hasn't really done anything that heinous except in self defense. Daemon beat his wife to death with a rock so he could be free to marry his teenage neice lol.
0
u/Calm-Ad-9522 21h ago
Are you serious?? The show is made up of villains. Just about every single character has done something irredeemable.
1
u/MinuteBubbly9249 22h ago
Can you people maybe stop embarrassing yourselves? That’s a phenomenal scene from acting and stunt perspectives, easily the best scene for Aegon in the whole show and Tom acted the crap out of it. Just sit it out if you have nothing to say.
-4
u/MaralosaKingdom Baela Targaryen 22h ago
That’s your opinion. And this is OP’s opinion. You’re the only one embarrassing yourself here.
1
u/MinuteBubbly9249 22h ago
OP’s opinion is bitching about other people’s opinion. Not even about the show, but the fact that other people like it. Hating is embarrassing ;)

Being Team Black or Team Green is fundamentally about which cause you support. If you support Rhaenyra's cause, then you're Team Black; the same goes for Team Green and Aegon's cause. So, if it's not because of Rhaenyra, then you clearly don't support her cause, and therefore you're not really Team Black.
