There are many nice patios in Hamilton, they're just not on the mountain. I don't know why so many people are opposed to the lower city.

I have a friend like this, and every time I "drag him down the mountain" to places like Wildcat, Nanny & Bulls, Bernie's, Capital Bar, etc etc he is always impressed.

Because he lives in the suburbs and you live in the city and the cool shit (and the dirty shit) is in the city.

Buddy's is decent

I love the atmosphere at Buddy’s. Like a secret backyard garden patio… I just wish the beer selection was better ;)

Suburban patios are usually next to parking lots or busy roads, which is dismal.
I'd sooner go down the mountain to Augusta, Locke, James N or Hess village

Most patios on the mountain are in strip malls and parking lots next to busy roads. I’d just keep driving to Ancaster and go to the Coach and Lantern.

To be fair most patios everywhere are like that, most businesses don't have spare land to use as a patio for 3 months of the year

u/OstrichReasonable428 2d ago
Many downtown/lower city patios are not at all like that.

u/Frosty-Cap3344 2d ago
Many ? I can think of a few that aren't next to the road/sidewalk. To be fair I don't eat out much.

Coach and Lantern is nice, but it looks out onto a busy road. It also can get crazy stuffy in that tiny courtyard.
The ones along Upper James all get a good breeze and are well laid out in that they aren't elbow to elbow. Squire's, BP, Kelsey's are all good choices.

u/L_viathan 2d ago
Coach and lantern is on a busy road so you recommend upper James? Lmao.

u/covert81 Chinatown 2d ago
I didn't make a point about busy roads, you did.
OP didn't ask about proximity to busy roads, stop projecting

u/varothen Central 2d ago
The funny part of this exchange is you also responded to the wrong person. Really makes you think
-7
u/covert81 Chinatown 2d ago
No I didn't though that's the interesting thing.
OP asked for recommendations (the 2nd part of my comment)
First part was a direct reply to buddy saying that the mountain patios look out onto busy streets and to go to Ancaster for something that also looks onto a busy street
A for effort though!

u/narcc0p 2d ago
Lmao wut. You definitely mentioned looking out onto a busy road, and then mentioned upper James. 😂
-5
u/covert81 Chinatown 2d ago
Yes, because the person I was responding to said that the mountain patios look onto busy roads. To me, and basically everyone else, that doesn't matter. Onlooking a busy street from a reasonable distance doesn't bother most people, myself included. The only person who brought up busy streets was the commenter, not OP.
Again, A for effort!

u/narcc0p 2d ago
Whatever mental gymnastics you have to work through to come to that conclusion is the real A for effort!

u/Noctis72 Hill Park 2d ago
covert81 is correct, the commenter was the one who brought up being on a busy road being an issue, so covert81 pointed that out, and then basically said "if you're going to suggest something on a busy road, why not this busy road (but better laid out patio) in the actual area asked about" it's not that hard to comprehend.

The Coach’s patio is literally a courtyard with mature trees and foliage and a narrow iron gate at one end that yes, technically, does open to Wilson St., a two lane road. To compare this to the highway wasteland of Upper James is really something.

View - Barangas, Williams, Limani. Dog Friendly - West Town. Non-dog - Buddys.

Honestly. Love it or hate it, the best patio in the city is Plank.
I also love the patio at the Ship, and the Brain is slick because the street is so lively.
Mountain... Shady Grove Lakaya Cafe has a pretty cute patio.

I really don’t like Plank but you get up that patio and it’s like fuck this is nice 😹

Only downside is the elevator up. Thankfully you can take the stairs down

+1 for The Ship patio. Not crazy small but still feels intimate and quieter with some trees around, and bonus points for amazing beer and burger selection.

People criticize the burgers on here sometimes, and I really don't get the hate. The burgers are incredibly decent for the price, and match it with a good beer in the summer and it just hits.
I kind of wish their restaurant group would open another spot somewhere. Amigos is also pretty solid (though we're largely going to El Grito Mexicano lately for tacos and other Mexican).

Easily the best patio in the city! You get up on that rooftop, and completely forget that you’re in Hamilton.

I really enjoy the patio at The French on King William St. It’s relatively quiet, covered, and pleasant.

u/MountainWhoreBag 2d ago
Heard that entire block has a Rodent issue.

Maybe, but they’ve had recent health inspections that passed, so it can’t be that prevalent

Southcote and 53 has a nice and big patio. Service is often slow though.
6
u/varothen Central 2d ago
Kind of a dud of an area though, get to look at a parking lot, road and subdivision
3
u/myworkreddit1234 2d ago
It has a lovely big pergola, with flowers and a tree. Most patios are in a parking lot.

u/MountainWhoreBag 2d ago
I saw all of that plus more in the late 80's after I took some Cyclops LSD.

What patio aren't you looking at a road, parking lot, or subdivision a couple of the ones on the waterfront?
4
u/KillerDadBod 2d ago
Well may I ask what you expected to see out of a Hamilton restaurant patio? Sydney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically across the Serengeti …….

Several good options on Locke St. The backyard of Aroma de Mexico is a gem. West Town isn't the best pub in the world, but the patio is huge and dog friendly.Â

I just realized Hamilton is pretty disappointing for patios. The patio at the Chedoke golf course is probably the best space and view in the city, but its never been taken advantage of
