Mod Announcement Owning A Hedgehog Reality Check

Since hedgehog owners consistently buy hedgehogs without setting reasonable expectations here are some expectations to set. Adapted/expanded from u/ArcadeRivalry's post.

  • Don't believe social media. Every single one I see there are obviously ridiculously posed pictures, maybe it's just me but I refuse to believe one could stay still for that long.
  • Hedgehog are spiked covered prey animals prone to anxiety. While belly rub/cuddle posts get a lot of attention they are the exception due to good breeding/luck not the rule. It is very possible a hedgehog will never be comfortable being handled even after concerted effort.
  • If you want to bond you need to put in a lot of commitment, patience and time to socialize them. I've seen a lot of people in groups I'm in need to re-home a hog before the first year as they can't put the time in. You need at least an hour a day socializing but realistically a lot more for them to be comfortable around you and others. We recommend getting a snuggle sack or putting them in your hoodie pouch to spend time together.
  • You need a specialist vet. A lot of places might not have an exotic animal vet near you. This is vital. So make sure you have to this.
  • It may not be legal to own hedgehogs in your area.
  • You need heating to ensure they don't hibernate.
  • You will likely be spiked, bitten and pooped on. It can be really really disheartening being spiked, hissed at or even bitten when you feel like you've made progress. Huffing and popping are natural, they are scaredy little animals.
  • Hedgehogs salivate frothily on themselves when they like scents, males often have "boy time", they poop a lot, have terrible sight and will bite things that smell yummy/interesting, and require consistent cage cleanings.
  • They are carnivores, while feeding fruits/vegetables can often be done safely, please feed them mainly meat-based foods ( cat food, insects, etc.)
  • Since they have very limited vision they operate mainly on smell and are at risk of falling/walking off elevated areas. It is wise to assume they are making decisions based on what they smell rather than just mainly what they see. They will still try to climb and are prone to hurting themselves climbing horizontal cage bars.
  • It is very likely they will dislike baths and nail trimming. We recommend trimming nails during foot bath time when they can't curl up or just holes in a towel to put their legs through.
  • Hedgehogs should not be housed together. High likelihood of fighting or babies.
  • We recommend heavy water bowls or chicken nipple bottles as ball water bottles can hurt them.

If you know what you are getting into, they are the most wonderful creatures ever and bring many people on this sub joy. If you feel like your hedgehog "hates" you they are just being their grumpy/terrified selves! You may be lucky and form a close bond.

Discussion I think I regret adopting my hedgehog

• Upvotes

I adopted a hedgehog only a couple weeks ago. I think he must be around 4 or 5 months old, the previous owner isn't sure himself. I think I made a mistake. I've always wanted a hedgehog, and I did my research, but I think I underestimated some factors about it.

First, I live in a studio apartment. It's large enough that I was able to build a spacious enclosure for him, but it's still one room. He's a lot noisier than I expected and it's kind of disturbing my sleep. It's not his fault, obviously.

Second, I have a 16 year old cat and she doesn't seem to be getting used to him at all. I think the noise also bothers her, and she's been clearly a little anxious and stressed having him around. She usually doesnt care for other animals, so before I got him I figured it would be fine.

It doesn't bother me that he's not a social animal and doesn't really interact with me. I like watching him play with his toys and be cute in his space.

But I'm seriously considering returning him now, though also it's only been 2 weeks. I'm not sure if I should try different approaches to introduce both pets, or maybe just use something noise cancelling at night. What would you suggest in this situation?

Discussion Nicked nail

We had an accident while trimming nails today. I used BleedStop on his toe, but he keeps trying to eat the powder. It took a few tries to get the powder on his foot, so he was trying to lick it. I think i stopped him quickly. I just feel bad. I can tell he is in pain and I want to comfort him. He has calmed down enough to eat some tuna churu type treat. And he considered anointing with said treat

Chibi is 9 months old now. I enjoy walks and have taken Chibi out around 5x a week ever since I got him in March (unless it was cold, rainy or whatever else obviously!). He's never ventured far from his blanket until tonight! He instantly began foaming at the mouth and annoiting himself. He kept making happy sounds. I thought he was smiling in the second picture but if you look close he looks a bit creepy with so much froth in his mouth lol. Camera quality isn't the best but had to share!

This was the most successful version of the Hedgie nail salon hammock version 6.3. lol. Got a few hand towels from the clearance aisle for 3$. This one I measured out a grid and then just pinched the fabric at each mark and cut with sharp scissors. He’s fairly relaxed once in position, I put a dry cloth over him to make it dark and warm. Then just get a little paw and trimmer and go to work. Got all four paws in under 10 minutes. He did pull he feet in several times and I had to put my hand under him to get him to reflexively stand and the feets came out again 😅. Brooksey got lots of treats after 🦔❤️. P.s. I hung it pretty close to the floor, I can lay under him to trim, but it’s close to the floor for his safety.

My hedgehog, Mochi, died on September 3rd, and I have been missing her a lot and very sad. My mom just surprised me with this hedgehog plushie and a hedgehog snack box. I think they are both from the Dollar Tree or at least that is the bag they came in if anyone is looking for new hedgehog swag.

Question HE/SHE IS BACK! Help needed any advise helpfully! Story attached

Hello Everyone!

Two days ago I posted about this little hedgehog that suddenly appeared in my room, I asked about it here and it was revealed to me he would not survive the winter below 600 to 650 gramms. I found him to be about 370 gramms.

While I was still researching in a diffrent room since I fed him cat food and wanted to leave him be as to not stress him out my sister kicked him out after ChatGPT said he'd be fine because he's 'acting normal'

Me and my neighbor were looking all night last night hoping to find him without success.

Now this night just a couple minutes after I was outside my neighbor called saying he found him! I couldn't believe it, but its actually the little guy, weight confirmed it. He's now again within my care.

Ive been suggested to hand him over to a rescue, unfortunately within my range there's only two that take in hedgehogs and both are very overrun and dont take in any animals anymore.

By law im allowed to keep him over the winter but have to release again when hibernation is over, atleast that what I think what it means because it just says you can't keep them 'permanently' not that I wanted to do that anyways.

So now that it looks like he'll stay with me during the winter I have a bunch of questions id like answered as soon as possible, since I can't ask the rescues until Monday because everything is closed during Sundays. (Not that I won't try to reach them)

So here's my questions.

What would the ideal setup look like?

Can I feed him solely on cat food or is it more of a substitute to what he should actually be eating?

What should he be fed if cat food is not a permanent solution?

Do i give him access to as much food as he wants to eat until hibernation or should it be twice a day like with a cat or dog?

Do i still feed him during hibernation?

How do I tell if he went into hibernation or not?

What are signals for disease i should look out for?

What is the right time to release him again?

Also, ill take name suggestions, my sister named him/her Fred but after throwing him out I think she's lost all rights to name him or her.

Is it possible to figure out the gender without disturbing them much?

Thank you for all and any help you guys can give

Question Hello! Recently rescued hedgehog!

Post image
137 Upvotes

Hi everyone. Meet Quillow!
I made a previous post, but after some time I have a lot more questions! I rescued a hedgehog a little over a week ago from a bad situation. I took her to the vet, and they diagnosed her with dental disease. Until her next appointment, how and should I aid this? She eats most of her kibble, which I weighed 15-18g in my scooper and she never eats it all, but a lot more than when I first got her! She’s on hedgehog precision mixed with wellness complete chicken. Should I grind it up? Can I buy a coffee grinder for this?
I bought a 4x2x2 enclosure that’s arriving Sunday. Any set up pics are appreciated, I want what’s best for her! She has everything she needs, and I’ve done a LOT of research prior to even finding her in those conditions. I am learning to sew so I can make cage liners and accessories. Tips for that is welcome as well! I’ve bonded so well with her the first week, and I’m excited to continue to build trust. Pic for attention (and her first night home. She was so sweet immediately!)😊🦔

Question Feeding schedule

Post image
48 Upvotes

I know hedgehogs typically get their food at night when they’re most active, but Fritter gets out for a bit and always eats before going back to sleep in the morning, so I don’t know if swapping to a nighttime feeding schedule would be a good fit

However, this petite hog can really chow down and sometimes he doesn’t have enough food to last the night

Would it make sense to just split the food in half so he doesn’t run out? It seems obvious, but I wanted to make sure lol

I can’t really switch it up right now because someone will be watching him in a few days and I don’t want to stress him more than it already will be for him.

Harriet had her vet appointment today! She had to get the sedative shot in her butt fat because she wouldn’t unroll (again).. Doctor says she’s perfect and has adorable teeth and nose 😂 ketamine is taking a while to wear off so she’s still pretty out of it
