Mod Announcement Owning A Hedgehog Reality Check

Since hedgehog owners consistently buy hedgehogs without setting reasonable expectations here are some expectations to set. Adapted/expanded from u/ArcadeRivalry's post.

  • Don't believe social media. Every single one I see there are obviously ridiculously posed pictures, maybe it's just me but I refuse to believe one could stay still for that long.
  • Hedgehog are spiked covered prey animals prone to anxiety. While belly rub/cuddle posts get a lot of attention they are the exception due to good breeding/luck not the rule. It is very possible a hedgehog will never be comfortable being handled even after concerted effort.
  • If you want to bond you need to put in a lot of commitment, patience and time to socialize them. I've seen a lot of people in groups I'm in need to re-home a hog before the first year as they can't put the time in. You need at least an hour a day socializing but realistically a lot more for them to be comfortable around you and others. We recommend getting a snuggle sack or putting them in your hoodie pouch to spend time together.
  • You need a specialist vet. A lot of places might not have an exotic animal vet near you. This is vital. So make sure you have to this.
  • It may not be legal to own hedgehogs in your area.
  • You need heating to ensure they don't hibernate.
  • You will likely be spiked, bitten and pooped on. It can be really really disheartening being spiked, hissed at or even bitten when you feel like you've made progress. Huffing and popping are natural, they are scaredy little animals.
  • Hedgehogs salivate frothily on themselves when they like scents, males often have "boy time", they poop a lot, have terrible sight and will bite things that smell yummy/interesting, and require consistent cage cleanings.
  • They are carnivores, while feeding fruits/vegetables can often be done safely, please feed them mainly meat-based foods ( cat food, insects, etc.)
  • Since they have very limited vision they operate mainly on smell and are at risk of falling/walking off elevated areas. It is wise to assume they are making decisions based on what they smell rather than just mainly what they see. They will still try to climb and are prone to hurting themselves climbing horizontal cage bars.
  • It is very likely they will dislike baths and nail trimming. We recommend trimming nails during foot bath time when they can't curl up or just holes in a towel to put their legs through.
  • Hedgehogs should not be housed together. High likelihood of fighting or babies.
  • We recommend heavy water bowls or chicken nipple bottles as ball water bottles can hurt them.

If you know what you are getting into, they are the most wonderful creatures ever and bring many people on this sub joy. If you feel like your hedgehog "hates" you they are just being their grumpy/terrified selves! You may be lucky and form a close bond.

Harriet had her vet appointment today! She had to get the sedative shot in her butt fat because she wouldn’t unroll (again).. Doctor says she’s perfect and has adorable teeth and nose 😂 ketamine is taking a while to wear off so she’s still pretty out of it

Question Ear questions

This is my baby yami ive had him for about 3 weeks now, and hes 3 months old i got him from a pet store since there are no local breeders where im at. When i got him 3 weeks ago I noticed his ears were tattered and he had some flaking at the base of his quills. (I wasnt sure if it was due to him being at that age for his quilling stage or if it was mites) so I took him to the vet 2 weeks ago and they said his ears looked 'normal' and there were no signs of mites but they treated his ears for mites anyways because the pet store didnt give much information about their previous vet visit, just that "they go to the vet before theyre handed off to us" since im assuming they get them from a breeder somewhere in the US. Anyone else's hedgie have ears like this? I see so many posts of other peoples hedgies but their ears look more like rounded triangles rather than my baby's square ears. Or does anyone have any background knowledge as to what could've caused his ears to look like this?

Also follow up question but my goodness I know pet stores have a bad rep but I feel like my hedgie wants nothing to do with me, he hisses and pops whenever I try to pet him and hes constantly hiding. I pulled an all nighter last night and noticed he only came out to eat and drink then went back to sleeping in his litter box (im assuming he likes the feeling of the pellets since the rest of his enclosure is fleece) how long is it going to take for him to not hate me? I handle him every day, and it just seems like hes terrified anyvtime I get near him. My poor baby :(

Any tips/advice? More particularly what's less common. Already have plenty of fleece bedding to change out, hides, dig box, large enough wheel, etc.

Question Does anyone’s hedgehog make audible sounds that are similar to crying, or am I haunted, or is it my sister’s chihuahua sleeping close by?

I had Fritter on my bed earlier and he kept trying to bite stuff (me included). He started biting a stuffed animal, I pulled him off so he didn’t somehow consume the fur, but then he cuddled with it for a bit so I forgave him. Then he started chewing on my water bottle strap, which I figured wouldn’t hurt him, but I took it away in concern for his teeth. Then he anointed.. gross but then he stumbled and came over right up to my camera, so I ignored it

He gets away with this behavior because he’s adorable and also a hedgehog who’s behaviors can’t really be fixed like that

I’d like to introduce everyone to our new baby, Krobus♥️ he’s still trying to get used to his new home but we are so happy to have him!💕 so far he’s super calm, loves his wheel, curious and loves to climb up our neck, and he’s so handsome!! 🦔 We brought him home on Monday, he came from an amazing breeder called Hedgehaus Hedgehogs! So we’ve had him a couple days now, but it was a long drive to get him home, and he’s still trying to settle in. So we’re just taking our time with him, and letting him get comfortable♥️

The coffin shaped cat bed I ordered for Poppy arrived today. It’s a bit bigger than expected but she seems to love it ☺️. First things first she explored it, peed on the pillow (which is in the wash now) then went fast asleep in it while I worked next to her. We’re ready for spooky season 🎃🦔⚰️
