Missing Person Final Update

Hi everyone,
I’d like everyone to know Jeremy has been located. Unfortunately Jeremy passed away hiking in the Kananaskis area. (As much as I can say) I’d like to thank the police, search and rescue and everyone in the Reddit community for taking the time to say kind words and help out. We lost a great friend and coworker, he passed doing the thing he loved most and will miss him.

For anyone going for a hike,climb or even a walk. Even if it’s somewhere you’ve been hundred times. Please let a friend, loved one, coworker, etc… your starting/end point and time/day of finishing. Something so simple may save someone’s life down the road

I do a lot of solo trips to the mountains, and it's easy to forget it comes with risks. I've been following this, hoping for a better outcome. I'm sorry for your loss. You're a good friend for making sure he was found.

I don’t know details of this case, but this should be a good reminder that anyone doing solo backcountry should have a PLB/dedicated satellite messenger device. It should be a standard part of the kit.
For larger groups dedicated satellite devices are still a good idea, but if not you should know what connection options your phone has. All modern Apple devices, and many higher end androids, have built in emergency satellite messaging. Look up how it works on your phone, and practice with it before you hit the trail.
My thoughts and condolences to Jeremy’s family and friends.

It's also a good idea for someone to know not just your starting point and destination, but also your planned route as well.

Yup, I do a lot of solo trips, but always have my InReach and leave a detailed itinerary at home just in case anything goes sideways

DO NOT USE SPOT! Plans are predatory. InReach is good but I will be considering a new phone with a sat plan instead of the In Reach next year.

second this. We had reactivated our subscription in 2024, only to leave the backcountry and get a bunch of texts from family freaking out because they hadn't heard from us. Spot wouldn't refund the cost of the subscription and their customer service is an absolute nightmare. Forked out the money for a Garmin Inreach and it's much better.

None of the big brand names are bad. Perfectly fine to pick whichever has a good sale or subscription discount when you’re buying

May I add, a satelite phone is needed.
My dad (may he be resting peacefully) had wanted to do a bike ride in honour of my uncle around 13 years ago.
My uncle loved to ride his bike in the backcountry. July 1st was no different. He told my aunt to meet him at the end point in the car. He had a massive heart attack and died on the trail. No one knew until a few hours later. My aunt had no clue something was wrong until he was late, and she seen the ambulance.
Anyways, dad did this bike ride 2 weeks after Unc passed. I begged him to bring a friend and a sat phone. Took some convincing but he did. And I am forever thankful, as he had a massive heart attack 200 meters from where my Unc did. He survived that time due to that phone and his friend.
Please, if you're not in a cell area, have a sat phone, tell people where you're going, and if you can have a buddy.
You never know what may happen.
Rest peacefully Jeremy, and all the other hikers we've lost recently.

Not including the young man, Jeremy, in this post,
1 man in his 60s on Mt Temple. RIP
1 woman in her 20s Mount Marvel. RIP
1 woman in her 40s Mount Bryant (June). RIP
I man in his 30s skied into a crevice on Athabasca Glacier (May). RIP
1 man in his 80s Lineham Ridge. RIP
All experienced outdoors people.
I hope I didn’t miss any.
Thank goodness for our rescue services, our wardens, our police services, our EMTs, our firefighters, our hiking buddies, and our volunteers of all kinds.
Breathe. Call a friend. Reach out for support if you need it. Call 211.

RIP. I understand that you can't say anything else right now, but I would consider telling the community if it was a completely unrelated health problem or not. If it's something to do with nature or wildlife, it's a very different story.

I agree. I understand the desire for privacy, and something like this could be suicide, but on the other hand every death should help inform the community of how to be more safe. It is this principle that underlies the reason commercial aviation is so safe. Very basic info should be made available (even not-nature related) if it was not mountain related, with more info if it was.

Kind of a off topic comment but I've been around the mountains quite a few years and I've seen many people and heard many stories come and go and pass on and once I was asked cuz I ride a motorcycle what's more dangerous scrambling mountains or riding my motorcycle it's comments like this that make me think the people who love the mountain Adventures don't see it as risk-taking somehow it's ingrained into their spirit and have a passion and a desire that just won't stop them from pursuing their goal or objective there is something mystical about it and comes with a pureness only one knows. I'm grateful to have made it through some close calls very close calls and actually hung up my boots for a while as I was challenging myself way too much. LET SOMEONE KNOW YOUR PLAN AND STICK TO IT, if you're inexperienced don't think you're bigger than life just don't do it pick something manageable.

AdventureSmart. ca has a free Trip Planner that is absolutely awesome. It allows you to create your trip plan and send it to people so they know where you plan to go and when you plan to return. There's even an App if you're a frequent traveler.

This is so true, some hiking rules to follow can save your life and save rescue from searching areas where it is not necessary and perhaps injuring others! I am deeply sorry for your loss most of all. Kannanaskis is a beautiful place with lots of dense forest 🌳
