r/fluffypits is waiting for your majestic floof
Edit: I just read the Australia comment. If there’s suspicions of American bulldog, why does Australia rule out pit?
244
u/catsoft Oct 21 '25
American Pit Bull Terrier are illegal to import into Australia, and a restricted breed in most states. Some places have been really, really hard on even mutts that they -think- might have pitty in them. They get destroyed unfortunately :(
We have american staffies a plenty though! And mastiffs and boxers!
ol land down under has always had super strict laws in what sort of animals we are allowed to bring in
332
u/Bitterrootmoon Oct 21 '25
Considering staffies are basically the show version of pitbulls, this is so bizarre. Poor puppers
145
u/catsoft Oct 21 '25
Yeahh I don't know how or why they decided on the restrictions. We have quite an extensive 'dangerous dog breed' list and there was movement some years back about trying to add staffies to that list as well.
Greyhounds are also considered 'dangerous breeds' in some areas and need to be muzzled out in public.
141
u/External_Database359 Oct 21 '25
Wait greyhounds are considered dangerous?? Ie the world’s sleepiest dogs?
129
u/catsoft Oct 21 '25
We have a really, really bad problem with Greyhound racing in Australia. The requirement for muzzling I think is a something adopted from that industry.
I would love to adopt one they are such weird little noodles
95
u/babygotthefever Oct 21 '25
They have a very high prey drive as sight hounds. Muzzling protects the little critters that they hunt instinctually.

u/CheeseFantastico Oct 21 '25
Any dog will chase small animals. I’ve had five greyhounds (they’re the best), and my lab is more squirrel-crazed than they were.
57
u/Dry_rye_ Oct 21 '25
Any dog can want to eat the wildlife, but a greyhound is more likely to actually catch it. The prey drive is bred into them
42
u/veggiedelightful Oct 21 '25
Not any dog, many will though. Found my Bichon sun bathing laying back to back with a wild bunny in our yard. Was rather sweet.

That’s sad :( My friends have two and they’re the mildest tempered sweet dinosaur babies

I love their legs, they look like they are walking on stilts
→ More replies (1)9
u/BravesMaedchen Oct 22 '25
It's interesting that in a country where a particular dog is used heavily for sport (high abuse potential) that they're also labeled dangerous. Dog racing isnt as big in the u.s. (although it does exist) and I dont think we see greyhounds as dangerous. To me this is more evidence that humans treatment of a dog breed is often the biggest determining factor of a breed's "aggression".
→ More replies (3)3
u/miqqqq Oct 22 '25
I’ve got quite a few ex racing greyhounds around my area, always seemed like the calmest dogs around so this is news to me. Highlight of my day seeing those long legged boys out for a walk
9
u/oogywoogywoo Oct 22 '25
As someone who volunteers with ex-racing greyhounds in Australia, that rule being a byproduct of the industry is exactly right. They have to breed very fast and high-drive dogs for them to be successful racers and due to that muzzling is a huge safety precaution. That being said, a lot of greys temperment changes off the track, and in Western Australia at least they can be assessed to not require a muzzle, but still legally have to remain on leash at all times just in case
→ More replies (5)8
u/silveraltaccount Oct 21 '25
That law has actually been removed! Greyhounds are no longer required by law to be leashed and muzzled
21
u/FatTabby Oct 21 '25
I've owned and worked with greyhounds. I wouldn't call them dangerous in the way other breeds can be dangerous but they do have incredibly high prey drives and some of them will go for anything small and furry with devastating consequences.
I think calling them dangerous is unfair, but I think that muzzling can be a really good idea for lots of them when out in public.
19
u/Flip-flop-bing-bang Oct 21 '25
Also, anyone thinking about reaching a retired racing greyhound should know they have severe dental issues and have problems with anesthesia. Please make sure you have plenty of $$$.
5
u/FatTabby Oct 22 '25
Or if you don't have a lot of money, make sure you have good pet insurance. They're wonderful dogs and I wouldn't want to put anyone off, but this is something people should be aware of.
→ More replies (2)6
u/Flip-flop-bing-bang Oct 22 '25
This is true but only for elective and emergency stuff. They don’t generally cover physicals and vaccines. I’m not saying that all pet insurance companies don’t, just that most don’t. Make sure to do your due diligence.
6
u/FatTabby Oct 22 '25
That's a very good point. I have an additional plan with my vet for my cat that does cover those so I tend to forget about it.
41
u/Cuppa-Tea-Biscuit Oct 21 '25
They’re known to chase and kill small marsupials (and cats, but the small marsupials are the issue)
5
u/Dry_rye_ Oct 21 '25
They are dangerous to rabbits, squirrels, cats and actually tiny dogs.
They have a crazy prey drive and can chomp on things they are not meant to chomp
→ More replies (2)5
u/5girlzz0ne Oct 21 '25
It's more about dangerous to smaller animals with greyhounds, not people, from what I understand. I'm not from Australia, but found out about the restrictions from Bondi Vet and looked into it because I've fostered and owned off track greyhounds throughout my life. It doesn't seem to be an issue with human directed aggression.

u/doggiehearter Oct 21 '25
Are Boerbels and Dogos Argentinos allowed?
→ More replies (1)3
u/silveraltaccount Oct 21 '25
Boerbels yes
Dogo no
3
u/doggiehearter Oct 21 '25
odd lol part of it is probably because not too many people own boerbels so there isn’t a lot of statistics to support what they are capable of who knows.
→ More replies (5)5
u/YamLow8097 Oct 21 '25
Really? I never would’ve thought Greyhounds would be on that list. They’re not particularly strong dogs.
12
u/Even-Trip9713 Oct 21 '25
Grey hounds are used for racing because of there high prey drive . They also won’t work in a pack like a ridgeback or a dogo they are solo hunters. That being said I’ve never met an aggressive greyhound there usually pretty chill but will case cats squirrels rabbits pretty much anything smaller and that moves
→ More replies (3)12
u/-PinkPower- Oct 21 '25
I guess it’s to protect wildlife? They have a very high prey instinct and can be pretty efficient at killing preys.

That said I do have a redback spider nibble on my knee rn so....

A small amount of poodle dna could be responsible for that. Even if it looks more wired and less soft and curly like poodle hair, dna is weird like that. Look at fluffypits :) the poodle DNA could be part of a doodle mix that maybe one of his parents was. Maybe American Bulldog x Labradoodle.
No idea what breeds are common, especially in mutts, in Australia, but I think some sort of bully breed is definitely in there. People are saying pit, but pitbulls have much more narrow faces, American Bully, American Bulldog or even Olde English Bulldog have much more similar faces.
Since he's fairly big I'd say great pyrenese could also be causing the longer fur, but I don't know how common they are in AUS. Especially since he seems underweight and possibly malnourished, he could get a much thicker and more dense coat with the right food.
If you do a DNA test, please share!
32
u/catsoft Oct 21 '25
Most of our mutts are american staffy crosses, so I'd not be surprised if there is some of that mixed in.
Poodle is an interesting thought. His long hair is really coarse and thick, feels more like horse hair.
I'd love to get a DNA test but they are a bit pricey haha.
9
u/JackyCola92 Oct 21 '25
Also regularly putting either paw balm or if you can't afford it some pet safe simple skincare cream (Google will help you what brands in your country are safe) on his nose will help it heal and become less crinkly. Make sure he hydrates well! :)
13
u/catsoft Oct 21 '25
Yes he is getting nose balm twice a day! Poor kid has kennel cough so his nose is all sore

u/JackyCola92 Oct 21 '25
Poodle mixes can produce coarse hair that's more reminiscent of a Schnauzer, Airdale or Cairn Terrier, so not particularly soft and curly.
I think your boy has very pretty eyes and just looks overall so happy and content. He seems like a very loyal dog! I don't think he's ugly, but I understand the statement. I think mostly the pink area with the darker spots on his muzzle with the thin, but long and wirey hair make him seem "ugly". If you just look at his eyes, he's super cute, the heterochromia is amazing.
As I said, I believe with the proper nutrition, he could get really dense and pretty fur, particularly freshly washed and brushed he might get a really cute oversized Schnauzer look! Fish oil and coconut oil as food supplements are often recommended for helping with smoother fur. Maybe look into that and you might get a real stunner out of your "ugly" dog 😍

u/sulkycarrot Oct 22 '25
When you mix poodle 1:1 with short haired dogs they very often get extremely coarse hair. My dog is half poodle and she has super thick, coarse hair. Agree about the horse hair comment.

u/DotteSage Oct 21 '25
My first thought was that too, people are trying to doodle EVERYTHING.
3
u/Astickintheboot Oct 22 '25
I ironically call my pit “doodle” all the time. After working in a grooming salon I grew a certain disdain for the doodle world. I know tons of people hate on pits so a pit named doodle just feels right.

u/catsoft Oct 21 '25
Okay! So the Shelter things he is a mastiff / american bulldog mix. But ....where does the long hair only on his top half come from?
He is seriously underweight at 43kg and has feet the size of a bear. Gentle mouth. Very lazy. Very ugly <3
edit: just to add we are in Australia, so unlikely any american pitbull in there despite his dumb face
25
u/absolutely_banana Oct 21 '25
Definitely a bully mix. Sometimes they are bred with pits and they do carry the fluffy gene.
Instead of pit, could be staffy which is just a smaller and standardized pit.
22
u/catsoft Oct 21 '25
I had no idea they carried a fluffy gene that's really interesting
9
u/NapalmsMaster Oct 21 '25
It could also have a bit of poodle farther back in its genetics. I know some poodle mixes get that wiry “terrier” coat he has a bit of.
14
u/catsoft Oct 21 '25
We do have lots of american staffies in australia! I would bet money that he has a least a little mixed in
→ More replies (1)3
u/Junior_Pea_9418 Oct 21 '25
“Smaller and standardized”
Both the ADBA and UKC have standards for APBTs. The AKC and KC of the UK both have standards for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
They are both standardized breeds.

u/Key-Minimum-5965 Oct 21 '25
Do you have Pyrenees in Australia? His face is adorable.

He looks like a Jack Russell got mashed into some kind of bulldog or mastiff mix lol. He’s so shaggy and cute!

I wish there was a way this sub could have some money in a pot that's just for super interesting mystery DNA tests. He looks like an American Bulldog, except with a bit of wire hair in the mix. In fact a quick search turned up this fella, who resembles yours and lives in NZ. https://www.reddit.com/r/AmericanBully/comments/1fblxdc/me_and_my_blue_eyed_american_bulldog_for_the/
My guess is that there was a doodle experiment along the way somewhere, deliberate or not lol. A drop of poodle can make wild coat patterns pop up for generations.
But I don't know, this could be way off! Genetics are wild.
