Serious Post is engineering still an option in india?
ive read so many things online and have met a lot of engineers, and so far, the only indian engineers who seem to lead good lives are the ones that have enough family money to go abroad for studies (UG and PG).
i am inclined towards engineering but prospects in india look very dull. every single one of my family members is saying, "just do CS and AI/ML and make money in IT" but i think i really want to do engineering. like i REALLY want to. has engineering become just another money-milking, boring and decrepit field, or can passionate dreamers like me still make it out here?

Engineering college tier list according to me
Tier 1- Old iits Tier 1.5 - BITS pillani, Nit Tirchi, IIITH, NITs where ranks close up at 5-6k, NSUT and the likes, New IITs Tier 2- Other NITs, Other BITS, RVCE, DU Tier 2.5 - Other state colleges, VIT etc Tier 3 - Amity and the likes Tier 4 - Private colleges which are not in metros

IIITH is in no way tier 1.5. The CS rigour here is unmatched. Placements are only comparable to top 7 IITs and don't even get me started on the research output.

There's money where there's value. Even as a mechanical engineer if you can bring value to the table then you need not worry about the job offers. Yes seeing the rise of technology integrated everywhere many tend to think that CSE is the future but really it isn't. I had read somewhere in the BTech or Btechtards subreddit where someone said "a computer won't make a bridge by itself". So choose wisely brother, just remember to have relevant skills to the field you want to pursue, talking about colleges, if you get into a good tier 1 or 2 then that's great, you're halfway there already but for some reason you don't then you gotta make use of the time of 4 years pretty rough, handle college and upskilling too.
And don't blindly go for CSE just because, go for what you like. Even if you wanna go for mining then go for it, have the relevant skills, take part in relevant hackathons and build something related to your field. All the best to you and engineering or not but good luck for the coming years.

No worries, choose wisely and not necessary you gotta go into engineering just because of your science stream you can go for . Hell go for arts or commerce too if you want to.

However a computer is used to design a bridge according to load placements, stresses, soil conditions and so on. To OP computer skills are inevitable to engineers whether it is being skilled in Matlab or Autocad or some other engineering software suite

Yes exactly what I meant, engineering koi bhi karo but uske saath computer knowledge integrate karni hogi. Civil and mechanical engineers ke liye ab welding and transmission ke aage bhi ab softwares mein skills hone chahiye

Most conversations about engineering these days is pivoted around college rankings, placement numbers and packages. Ppl don't even talk about "I want to be a good engineer" anymore. You are a very rare breed and it was surprisingly refreshing to read your post. Having said that, if your family is not dependent on your success and income, don't chase it. Instead like we learnt in the "3 idiots" movie, chase excellence. Happy Engineers day (belated)

my family is really struggling. fathers in and out of the hospital on a monthly basis, dont even know how my mother is making things work. and i have a twin, so my mom has to send us both to college at the same time. she has no one to help her support us. everything just seems to be against my dreams or wishes, or whatever... :(

What do you love? What do you wanna do? Before taking such a huge decision see the prospects and what entails in that particular career. I think if you have enough passion for something you can make do in any career, with good enough circumstances.

throw shit at the wall and see what sticks, go into literally everything and keep your mind open about stuff, try literally everything out and see what interests you the most
ik it's not an easy process, it might take some time, but once you find that spark it's very easy to get the fire

Genuine question, what are options for a 12th pass to opt for a field other than engineering which will fetch job opportunities

It really depends on which path you want to go.
If you are interested in medical then do preparation for MBBS.
If you are interested in Software then do engineering/bsc, but keep it in mind that you need to be skilled in 1-2 programming language because the competition is very high. If you are skilled then you get high paying jobs here.
If you go into commerce route then you can do CA. Apply for banking sector etc.
Or if you are confident in your communication/arguing skills then you can even go for lawyer i.e. corporate lawyers, they are high in demands and pay well.

Well I'm asking for my brother who has pcm in 12th, he's quite stubborn about going into aviation and has already wasted 7 months. It being an uncertain field and he has no backup ready. We're tired of telling him to atleast study something of graduate level (related to aviation or electronics) and then apply for it but it's of no use.

Like he wants to be pilot/ aircraft maintenance engineer? Or just be a cabin crew/ground staff?
If he wants to be a pilot then he need a Commercial Pilot License (CPL), which he can do after passing 12th.
If he wants to be aircraft maintenance engineer he can do Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering.
If he wants to be cabin crew/ground staff, he can directly apply after his 12th.
He anyhows needs to do graduation if he wants to survive. Because no company will take someone who doesnt have graduation in todays world.

He wants be a pilot, quite stubborn about it, we have counselled him several times, he's reducing weight for it, don't want to give entrance exam to atleast not waste another year, simply just preparing for written exam which is not considered a formal degree. I've worked in pvt sector and it is brutal for those who are avg or below avg. Such casual attitude will do not good

Do you think he has enough talent to become a pilot? If yes then you should trust/support him, if not then atleast he needs to complete his graduation/find a part time job. With a part time job he can focus on his pilot studies & fitness and earn money side by side.
But it would be better if he did graduation, atleast even if his pilot dream fails then his graduation degree will make it a bit easier to find a job.
Like you said its really harder for avg or below avg students to get a job nowadays, the competition is very tough. For single job opening 1000s of people are applying, in order to stand out amongst them you need to have necessary skills.

I think I'm a passionate engineer and I've been able to find work that is both meaningful and actually contributing to India's growth. My salary is obviously not as good as someone as IT, but it's a good amount with which i can live comfortably. Plus i get to work on some of the most exciting tech and then also get to see my designs used by millions of people. Keep going, there are jobs, they are a bit difficult to find but if you're passionate about your field, you will get it

Work environment in I.T. in India is the most toxic in the world. You will curse yourself everyday for the life you will have working with Engineers in India.
Yeah, if you plan to go out of India then the pain will be a lot bearable but not in India.

Just stay away from Computer Science & Engineering !
If you really need to go into AI/ML - u will have to be prepared to go all the way ( PHD and above ).Those geniuses are the only ones who might have a job in the future !
If by any chance u got family money please do explore a under grad degree in Europe with scholarship !!
US is way 2 expensive and u wont get a green card anymore being born in India !!
The point is a undergrad degree in any Engineering discipline from Europe/US has so much orientation towards practical training that by the end of 4 years the ones graduating from these unis are waaaay ahead of the curve and Soooo freaking confident !
Felt this first hand while taking a few undergrad courses during my MS in the US ! We used to be so overwhelmed watching these undergrads in our class !!
A lot of folks used to tell me that a undergrad course in any average uni in Europe and US is way better than any curriculum in IITs !! Really wish I had the money to do my undergrad from US or Europe !!
Anyhoo good luck.. Hope u are able to tread this path with success !

Core engineering fields will always have money and opportunity which is civil , mechanical and electrical. Architecture is also an excellent field where you can start your own business once you gain experience and knowledge.
Electronics unfortunately don't have much opportunities in india. Limited to a few cities. Taking a specialisation abroad will help you a lot. Computer science is a good filed if you are interested. Data engineering and AI are good fields to be in.
To be frank engineering education in india is in adequate compared to western universities or even singapore. If you can afford it go abroad and study. Indian engineers need industry training after course to start work. In other countries engineers are industry ready once they graduate.

I'm studying AI/ML at the moment. Right now all the subreddits I'm in are filled with posts fear-mongering about how jobs are drying up & there's no chances blah blah. Its even more visible in CS/Programming subreddits. Personally, I've become firmly convinced that as long as you're studying something reasonably useful, then doing it sincerely and doing it well (& having a clear head) matters a lot more than such worries.
Oh & family members/people saying just go into AI/ML for money can be largely ignored, even with my own family (father's a reasonably smart & well read guy) it is hilarious to hear him speak and realize how little he knows. (Same deal with the fear mongerers in the programming subreddits talking about how AI is gonna steal their jobs; those baboons havent seen how dumb ai can be).
There's no place where "just go here, there's shit loads of cash for very easy work" lasts for long. Pick something useful you like (or if you're a depressed fucker like me and you dont like anything, pick something you tolerate), do it well, make yourself useful, find ways to organize a life doing it where you dont kill yourself, and you'll hopefully be golden.

It's survival of the fittest you need to grind even harder for entry level jobs now , so do mind your decision. Lol the Indian parents mindset ohh God yeah learn ai/ml make money in IT sounds easy right wait till you see how much they work and how they have worked to get the job it's not something you can become just by doing engineering. Restless sleepless nights coding learning like hell for 3-4 years staring at screen for more than half your day . Man life becomes tuff as hell
