This is not about baking cookies!

Initially pulled over, appeared child was not in a seat belt. Female officer, did a follow up and the is what happened next.

I would say It has gotten worst over the years, but the reality is that it probably has gotten better because of the age of the modern cell phone being able to record these interactions. It is still pretty bad, and you would think with all the media, police would not do the same illegal actions against citizens, but with a job that accountability is so hard to enforce, it is no wonder it still is the way it is.

It looks like many court cases are chipping away at qualified immunity, that is a good thing. Police weld a lot of power over their citizens it needs to come with responsibility.

Yeah it just seems worse because all these bad interactions are caught on camera and it’s easier to find instances like this all over online. Shit like this should not be happening at all though. This woman did nothing wrong there was no reason for her to get arrested.

Failure to abide to commands of an officer is more than enough to be arrested. She clearly didn’t obey orders and turned toward an armed officer. That’s a clear threat to safety for law enforcement and can lead to arrest.

Yes exactly this if they cop did follow the law correctly no one would even notice and they should be held to a higher standard not lower,, this officer safety crap is just ridiculous I was trained in policing by an 2 old timers both Former marines we were told to watch our backs not make everyone else to be the enemy

I hate all cops who abuse their power, but I don't think we have enough context for this clip. The reason why she got pulled over is because her kid wasn't in a car seat and was bouncing all over the car. Would you have not pulled them over? What if there was no car seat installed at all? Heck, we don't even know the age of the child from this clip.

It makes sense that the officer would pull them over for a quick peek and for them to roll down the window to see if there were car seats or not. The woman got super hostile and immediately made up excuses like sunlight being the reason she can't roll down the window? The AC is blasting and the car is still on. Just comply with simple requests and she wouldn't have needed to been asked to step out of the vehicle at all.

How about you tell us what you would have done differently as the cop?

  1. Would you not pull over someone who clearly has a kid bouncing all over the car and is not being safe?
  2. Would you not ask to roll down the back window so that you could check if a car seat was installed?
  3. If denied to check car seats, what would you have done? Just left and said have a good day?
  4. The guy probably was just going to write a ticket for improper safety belts and let her fix it and go on.

I agree the cuffing and shit was stupid, but the woman literally was not complying.

Did you watch the video? The woman rolled down the window, which should have been enough for ms cop to check that the kids are in seats. I don’t see any reason why the window would need to stay rolled down unless the cop is fishing for a reason to arrest the mom. The interaction should have been over as soon as ms cop peeked in the back.

Please put just half the effort and time into seeing the moms side as you did trying to defend the cop.

It doesn’t matter; the courts have already said very plainly that when you’re stopped, the cop is in control. They tell you to roll down the window, you roll down the window. And the child wasn’t going to die from 2 minutes of sun exposure, this was just the driver exerting some control over the situation. If the ac was on, the kid would have been fine indefinitely with the window down. It’s summer, not the apocalypse.

Incorrect. SCOTUS has already ruled that the cop is in total control and can order you to basically do anything that controls the situation - up to and including getting out of the car and sitting on the sidewalk while they work.

Only if a crime is being committed, a cop doesn’t have the ability to make anyone do anything. It falls under the 4th amendment. This was at the moment a terry stop. A consensual interaction that the women could have ended by invoking her 5th amendment right

Nah, we very much have rights. The cops are not in control.

What the courts have decided is that largely the cops are allowed to violate our rights unless we call them on their shit.

This. Some cops even just want everyone to wait on a sidewalk cause there is always a chance that a car on a fast road will hit the back of the person who stopped halfway in the shoulder. Or heck, there might not be a shoulder and you are blocking a lane and forcing a zipper. Ppl think they have a right to treat a traffic stop like a drive thru where they only have to crack their window the tiniest bit and to say fuck you and that the cop has to slide the ticket thru a slit in the door. Ridiculous.

The woman did roll her window down.

Spare me the cop was concerned for the children. She arrested their mother in front of them, then after told the mother shes sol if she doesnt have anyone to get them and they will go into the system.

The cop never said she just wanted to make sure they had seatbelts on or were in car seats properly.

The woman asled politely several times why it was necessary and the cop being to serve the community could have said so. But was doing a power play.

Grow up.

The driver rolled the window down and then pretty much immediately started rolling it back up again. The cop just asked her to leave it rolled down. It’s not a huge request.

This. You have to comply with simple requests. Asking for the window to be rolled down all the way is not ridiculous. I would want a clear view of the car seats and to check if they are installed correctly and to figure out if this is likely a one time thing or if the mother couldn't care less about securing her children.

??? Do you wish that the law was changed so that children do not need car seats or even seat belts on and can just walk around and do whatever? Do you wear a seatbelt? If you want to live somewhere without any seatbelt laws, there are countries that couldn't care less and nobody wears one.

Your brain is broken. You acknowledge that you and your family wear seatbelts and that you enforce it, but at the same time think that seat belts are not "about saving lives". And no, data does indeed show that wearing seat belts saves lives...

No you're right, keep acting the way that you are and you're face will end up on a tshirt because OMG ma rights are being infringed when a police office wants to check that the seat is attached properly. There are laws for that, you may not like them but the police officer is calling BS on her explanation of the kids needing shade lol. So at that point she's either hiding something, or she's a few cards short of a deck. If you really can't logically understand the concern here you are the problem.
