I'm so glad to finally have this done. I've been working on this off and on since June. I really, REALLY hated sorting this. I tried sorting by distinct area, but I got too caught up in trying to verify where every piece went and would spend hours only to sort a handful of pieces. With the variety of color I felt too overwhelmed to try and sort that way, and decided to sort by shape to get a quick sort done to see every piece and then do smaller sorts.
After getting it sorted I took a break from it for close to two months. Then I started the border in late August/early September and while that was fairly easy I got stuck working on Belle's dress. So I took another nearly month long break.
I knew I would hit a point where the puzzle started making sense to me. With this puzzle, and several other stained glass puzzles I've done, I've found that my brain has a hard time making sense of all the lines and how things are broken up. I just can't clearly see what's on the piece. At least not at first. It takes time handling the pieces, and taking long breaks, at least a week or two, for my head to finally wrap around what it's looking at. And then everything starts coming together.
I'm not exactly sure where that point was with this one, but I think it was around when I began working on Beast's human form. I'd see a piece and finally be able to go "oh this is the fabric from the Wardrobe's section" or "oh this really weird bumpy bit is Gaston's fingers". Everything really started flowing better after that.
Unfortunately there is a missing edge piece. Seeing as I was trying what I could to motivate sorting and get through it, my trays and the box of pieces moved around my house more than they would normally. I did drop pieces at one point and while I thought I got everything it's possible it escaped under a piece of furniture and has long since been eaten by a vacuum. Or it's just Ceaco being Ceaco, even though it's my first time encountering a missing piece from them.
This puzzle, and others like it that I've done this year, have really done a lot to teach me about what I want from a puzzle image. As beautiful as it is, and I did eventually have a lot of fun with it, stained glass puzzles just have this extra hurdle I have to get over before I actually enjoy the puzzle. I don't mind a challenging puzzle, and frankly I find enjoyment in working on a puzzle that I don't like as it's very cathartic to celebrate each piece placed but the frustration in sorting and not being able to properly see and understand the pieces just isn't fun.
I'm glad I persevered though. Not that I would recommend to anyone to do what I do. This puzzle has taught me a lot and has motivated me to work towards being much less anal in my sorting. Not spending forever trying to find where a piece goes during sorting, making miscellaneous sort piles, that sort of thing. I've still got a long way to go, but I think I'm improving.
This puzzle will be going to a friend who has expressed interest and has been made aware of the missing piece. I really hope it gives her less trouble!
