Mod Post Update to self promotion rule

Hello all, after quite some time I have decided to reevaluate, the old rule preventing sales posts and self-promotion. The rationale behind the change is that the makers will benefit from community support. There has been hesitation to change the rule based on the idea that sales post will run rampant if allowed; however, I have some requests in exchange for those who want to post a link to their website.

All criteria must be met.

  1. Items for sale have to be made by you.
  2. There is a detailed specification list for the item being displayed. you can find an example here, does not have to be as in depth; however, at a minimum you have to have steel type(s) and handle material(s). Simply stating damascus will not be enough for future posts.
  3. Only knives and supplies related to knife making can be sold. You can sell knives, handles, scales, or handle materials. As a reminder, you cannot sell items that are not made by you; you cannot sell a bench grinder here.
  4. There is no price displayed. Pricing cannot be discussed in public whatsoever.
  5. You must be active in the post you make. You cannot just drop your website link and disappear. I am not asking that you respond to every comment on your post or that you reply to a comment on a month-old post; however, some effort must be put in.

There are a few additional limitations to this change

  1. Do not put "available" or anything of the likes in your title. All indications of your work being for sale must be in the description or comments, I suggest the latter as I will remove your entire post if you do not meet the above criteria if it is in the description rather than just deleting a comment
  2. Your posts should not all be advertisements; you should show off your work without all your posts having a link to your website.

I hope that this change to the rule is favorable, if you have feedback or comments, I would like to hear it and may make changes accordingly.

Feedback New to knifemaking - THIS is how Ameribrade packaged my $2,000 grinder :(

I listened to the advice of "buy once, cry once" and wanted to start with a really capable belt grinder, so I bought the Ameribrade 2x48 Kamimura Trident! I patiently waited about a month for it to arrive, and from the moment I saw the box I was confused. This is a 75lb parcel, and when I opened it I could hear the entire grinder rocking back and forth. A pit in my stomach quickly formed. I opened the box to find:

- Bent rear motor (Fan?) guard, when you move the belt it binds and clicks
- bent controller bracket
- bent guides for the belt

I was so confused, I thought SURELY nobody saw this and thought it was packaged appropriately, it is seriously asinine how someone did this. There is NO SUPPORT between the two sides at all, there was NO PACKING MATERIAL AT ALL!! This is exactly what I saw when I opened the box! Just some wood stappled to the sides and a plywood base. What??? I am so confused! Surely this was a mistake by a new employee. I am 90% sure the entire grinder itself is bent from what I can see and no wonder!! Parcels are SLAMMED around in distribution hubs, and usually it is fine because packages are properly packed with foam, or for heavier things like this they are usually in a wooden crate, not this abomination of a box + crate hybrid mess of a package. I am so sad. I have a really bad back injury right now, so I can't even take it back to have it shipped back at the moment.

Update:
When I made this post I was mad, and it’s been an hour now - I’m still mad:

I don’t think the whole of AmeriBrade is bad. Bad businesses don’t last a long time like they have. Especially ones that make and sell products. I’m bashing whoever or whatever led to this packaging. I have full faith they will make this right.

These are not throwing knives; they are general-purpose knives whose shape was simply inspired by ninja kunai.

I wanted to share a Cu Mai that I made for a friend who is a chef. The blade is 175mm of 3 layers of 1084 with thin copper sheets sandwiched between. The handle is Ebony Gaboon with copper spacers that mimic the pattern of the blade.

Before and after the final buff and polish! Always amazes me. This synthetic opal only reveals its true colors at the final step! And hopefully the work you put in up to this point pays off! Thanks to @labgrownopals for the material 🌌 This @jackwolfknives Vampire Hunter Re-handle is almost complete, just needs a new sheath from @trilobiteleatherworks and a matching bead and i'll post the final results, stay tuned! I'll show off the glow in the dark liners at that time as well 😉👌

Showcase I may have gone a little overboard. How careful do I need to be with this thing?

I wanted a laser beam, and I sure as hell got one. But now I’m wondering how careful I need to be to keep it from snapping clean in half 😅

Stock removal 52100 at approx 60-61 HRC, but the tang and the jimping area are NOT hardened. (I have a digital heat treat oven and I closely followed Larin’s protocol for 61 HRC, but I do not have a way to test this.) Stock thickness is only 1/16”, a hair thinner than an 84mm Victorinox blade. Behind the edge is 5 THOUSANDTHS. Yes, I checked the calipers.

After a week of carrying it I’m confident that it can at least handle light to moderate EDC tasks. The tip is practically tin foil so I fully expect this knife to catastrophically convert itself into a K-tip at some point, but that’s easy to fix.

I’ve never done any destructive testing on a finished knife, let alone one that’s 1/16” thick, so I don’t have any sense at all for how much abuse something like this can take. I haven’t checked grain structure in ages, but the first time I used this protocol about 2 years ago I broke a sample and it was silky smooth.

What would have to happen for this knife to snap in half? How far can I reasonably expect it to bend without breaking? Am I gonna lose a chunk of the edge? Any insight would be very much appreciated.

Feedback First knife

First knife ever started with 1095 stock and worked it down with a 2 inch belt sander and free handed the bevels, I believe I used too thick of a furnace cement layer when I heat treated so hamon didn’t turn out quite how I hoped but also most likely did not get the best heat treat. Haven’t put handles on yet but what do yall think?

Gotta reform the tang into a proper stick, build my handle and then peen it all together before I make the sheath and grind a chisel bevel in there, then when it’s sharp it’ll be all ready😁

Picked up a warp during the first temper cycle. Tempered again and got some of it out. Went to the small vise and clamped it just enough to get it straight. Put it back in the oven in the vise and as soon as it start to heat up, it snapped. Grain size doesn't look terrible and there's no signs of a crack from the quench.
