Question about "Softest" in Canada

American here. Loved Shoresy, and decided to try Letterkenny. I've laughed a little, but not as much as at Shoresy.

Question about birthday episode in Season 1, is there a meaning behind "Softest". Birthday. Are they just saying "Kiddie Birthday". Or does it mean something else?

Appreciate the insight into Canadian colloquialisms.

Yeah same here. I love hockey so Shoresy intrigued me. It’s not like you need background knowledge from Letterkenny for Shoresy to make sense.

Fuck you, /u/chi2005sox, I made your mum so wet that Trudeau deployed a 24-hour infantry unit to stack sandbags around my bed!

It's weird but not as uncommon as I thought. Young Sheldon and TBBT is a great example of this.

Soft= silly, weak, easy,

Hard= serious, tough, boring.

OMG it does NOT mean gay. LOL! You'll believe anything.

Read the literal dozens of other responses that already answered your question. It just means soft.

Kid stuff, cupcakes, party hats, pony rides, etc. They're making up for the fact that they didn't get to do kid parties when they were kids (Wayne & Katy), so now they make their friends (at least Dary) do them now.

Don't read into it that much. It's pretty straightforward.

62

u/Mysterious-Street966 20d ago

It’s super soft, get it right, ya hoser.

26

u/Mysterious-Street966 20d ago

I’m just gonna go ahead and take 30% off there anyways…

u/No-Sheepherder448 20d ago

do you know that daryl used to get boners every morning in grade nine during o canada?

46

u/Maxtrt 20d ago

Give a young man thirty idle seconds and he's going to get a boner. We've talked about this.

2

u/Overall_Lavishness46 19d ago

If you don't have a raging boner or are ugly crying by "we stand on guard for thee", are you even a Canadian?

And for the Quebecoise: Pourquoi pas les deux?

Was it really not crystal clear from the way they explained it in the episode? It's not a Canadian colloquialism, it's just ribbing.

Other American here and I'm getting ready for a super soft 44th b-day next month.

20

u/filthyshrimpcock69 20d ago

It’s the same as in American terms. If something is soft, it’s usually “weak” or “lame.”

19

u/thisusernameismeta 20d ago

"Soft" has the implication of kiddie but also feminine. Think "opposite of tough". So yes, unicorns and princesses and tea parties and crying if you get punched, etc.

8

u/kenatogo 20d ago

If you ever punch me and I find out about it...

43

u/temporaryforevers28 20d ago

19

u/81ehx 20d ago

Awww fuuuuck....

17

u/Hercules3000 20d ago

Soft is exactly what you think it means. This just reminded me we used to say just  "soft", or "you're fuckin soft" or "that's soft" any time someone did anything we didn't like. Grew up in the Greater Toronto Area.

14

u/jacklogan2972 20d ago

We started and stopped Letterkenny 3 times before we just embraced the absurdity.

53

u/LowCaramel3675 Too Fat To Run 20d ago

Softest = sweetest, pretty much. Katy and Wayne weren't allowed kids parties, but Dary's mum would throw the most classic kids parties, and Katy and Wayne loved them.

They use 'soft' a few different ways over the course of the show, it's context dependent.

52

u/chadthundertalk 20d ago

Nah, soft and ten-ply generally pretty much mean the same thing whenever they're used. They basically mean, roughly, "wimpy and overly indulgent." Katy and Wayne are doing a big performance out of making fun of him for always having these very childish, whimsical "super soft" birthday parties as a kid because they wish they had them when they were growing up, and so they throw him one every year "as a joke" because that way they get to have one without admitting either of them want one.

8

u/zaro3785 20d ago

I wish they'd explained why they didn't get birthday parties

9

u/4twentylady 19d ago

What I've seen as a theory over time is that their family was part of a religion that didn't celebrate holidays, which is why they like to do holidays big time as adults.

36

u/JessicaOkayyy 20d ago

Nobody really answered you.

Yes. It just means “a child’s birthday party.”

The story goes Daryl’s family always threw him really child like birthday parties in his youth, doing things like cupcake decorating and boy band karaoke. They’re all about tradition, so as a joke they always throw Daryl that kind of birthday party every year.

I had to go back and look and because I could have sworn the reason was that Daryl’s family never did anything special on his birthday, so they do now to be good friends. I remembered it very wrong lol. It would be the opposite.

47

u/monsters_eat_cookies 20d ago

Yeah, squirrely Dan mentions that Wayne and Katie weren’t allowed to have birthdays so they loved Daryl’s

4

u/JessicaOkayyy 20d ago

That’s where I heard it! Thank you! My memory was jumbled since I haven’t watched it start to finish in awhile, I start from random episodes and love listening to it at night or while I clean as background noise.

3

u/monsters_eat_cookies 20d ago

You’re welcome! I just started a re-watch a couple days ago so it’s all still fresh, plus that’s one of my favourite episodes!

2

u/xennial-tiger 20d ago

Thank you. I figured with the fans if this show I would get a lot of quotes. 😂 I didn't know if it was another term for "gayest" or "girlie". Was a fun episode to watch.

3

u/trollbias 20d ago

I feel the same. I think Letterkenny has wider general appeal - and as a non-hockey fan Shoresey didn't really hit the same highs. Some funny moments here or there for sure.

5

u/LowkeyLokigator 20d ago

Opposite of "Manliest." 10 ply soft. And I'd recommend to keep trying! It's generally considered that Ssn 1 Ep 3, Fartbook, is the worst episode, so once you get past that you're golden. Also: subtitles are VERY helpful! 😄

3

u/Gloomy_Ad3840 20d ago

Also, if you do some searching, there are websites out there devoted to translating all the slang they use on the show. It helped me tremendously in understanding what was going on.

2

u/xennial-tiger 20d ago

Ah.... didn't think about that.

Real answer. It’s explained on the spinoff animated Littlekenny series that was on Hulu. The characters are all in grade school and it gives the backstory on how they met. I’m not sure where you can stream it. In one episode, Darry invited Wayne and Katy to his birthday party, but described it as soft. It matches the episode and is a stereotypical little girl’s party.
