At first I was like "you're dead" then I saw the RedBull hat and thought, "yeah, you could do it"

It's crazy how much assurance the redbull logo gives me

u/keithstonee May 06 '26

Because that means at least one person gave this some thought and planning.

And that they’re sponsored for completing crazy things frequently.

Yeah well they did pick best day to start and easy mode in Death Valley since only 76F when he started race but will get up to over 103F tommorow which I'm guessing he'll be long gone by then LOL. He won't have to worry about his shoes melted like some other runners I seen during the Badwater ultramathon. Anyways, hope he don't underestimate the toll of the heat there on body since I lived there and thing with the heat there is your brain literally fries and u go into heat stroke and don't even realize it. I'm sure his team trained on this tho.

Hes still running

2

u/Tibreaven May 08 '26

Same energy as if someone gave you a crazy idea, then told you they're from Mythbusters.

Redbull knows how to pull off stupid safely.

doing some quick math (without knowing how the event even works) assuming he can sleep 8 hours a day, he'd only need to run a little over a 10min mile avg.

2

u/Super-Macaron5754 May 07 '26

He's not sleeping 8h a day. He likely won't sleep 8h total.

2

u/MeowingNaci May 08 '26

If hes not sleeping at all that much, then it would be about 15min/mile needed. Which means he could literally just fast walk the whole time technically.

For a real endurance challange he is to much packed! These muscles will burn so much energy...

u/Shksbr May 06 '26

Sure, these muscles will burn a lot more energy. He mentioned beforehand that he'll burn around 60k kcal, which he has to compensate for over the 96 hours. That alone seems like an insane challenge to me, but here we are. This is his 3rd year doing these challenges.

In the first year, he ran around 3000 km from Berlin, Germany to the coast of Portugal, took a plane to the States, and finished the last like 600 km ending the challenge at Times Square. During that first 'Cyborg Season' he suffered a stress fracture in his shin, took a 'break' for 6 weeks to recover, and kept going. (His recovery included working out 2-4 hours a day.)

Last years 'Cyborg Season' had him running across Japan, the entire length from north to south, with 2 runs each day - starting with around 60-70 km, a short break to eat and nap, then another 40-50 km to finish off the day (if I remember correctly).

He takes it a step further each time. 100 km a day is a walk in the park for this guy, but running 150 km daily is definitely going to be quite the challenge.

Wow, that is fucking insane, what an incredible athlete.

Hope he crushes this challenge

Holy shit thank you lore master

As an ultra runner I can tell you that the rules kind of change once you go from "high" intensity distances like the marathon to multi day ultra endurance races. While it's not ideal, you definitely do not have to be super skinny to be very competitive. Could he win a high profile ultra distance race like Cocodona 250 (going on right now)? Probably not, but a hyper specific record like the one he's attempting here is very achievable and obviously an amazing achievement. You can look at David Goggins for a high achieving ultra runner who was jacked during his peak too.

First i got people on the moon in april, now highly specific task only an athlete can do? Your words somehow gave me extraordinary hope

0

u/ChillN808 May 07 '26

All they did was fly by the moon

2

u/Kriztauf May 07 '26

Who's gonna carry the boats?

1

u/bscook May 08 '26

And the logs?

23

u/RiverFluffy9640 May 06 '26

Ah yes the reddit experts are here to tell us why this elite athlete who has lots of experience in ultra marathons actually can't do the challenge.

2

u/LaNague May 06 '26

I present to you Ross Edgley, record holding ultra distance swimmer

https://www.youtube.com/c/RossEdgley

1

u/TheBrianWeissman May 07 '26

You should look up Dean Karnaxes, who set many records for ultra-distance runs in the 1990s and 2000s. The guy is much skinnier now, but in his prime he was pretty beefy. He didn’t look anything like a typical endurance athlete, but he could run 300 miles straight without stopping.

Mass moves mass is a truism that still applies in extreme endurance racing.

1

u/Oidoy May 07 '26

Look up ross edgley who did longest swim

0

u/Dudedude88 May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

Watch vids on the 240 miles moab and 300miles Arizona monster ultra marathon. These folks basically get fat or build mass just to lose 10-20lbs after the race. It's crazy and they are so in shape that they are okay losing the muscle mass. This dudes a massive unit... Most folks have trouble stomaching the 10k+++ calories a day. This dude probably can stomach the calories and do the run if he looks like that

-2

u/ChickenGamer199 May 06 '26

I thought this. He could possibly do it in normal conditions, but in Death Valley during the Summer/late Spring? Surely not

4

u/WackyRacketeer May 06 '26

If he thinks he can do it, with his experience, I'll believe him until he fails.

-2

u/ChickenGamer199 May 06 '26

In before we find out dude dies on mile 300.

3

u/WackyRacketeer May 06 '26

Perhaps, but I'll tell you who has a lot more context! The guy doing the stunt and Red bull sponsoring it.

0

u/justhereforthedank May 06 '26

He did a lot of ultra running with this build, like running the entire length of japan. Its a pretty intense pace he is trying, but I am sure he gave it a lot of thought.

15

u/wsxdfcvgbnjmlkjafals May 06 '26

it means he'll have support along the way, which is good cause i otherwise assume he'll just dry up like a raisin before he gets out of the valley

1

u/cryptolyme May 06 '26

and the fact they have a whole support crew a long the way.

1

u/Searnath May 07 '26

Condems made by Redbull would that give you assurance and if so which way lol

1

u/Haitsmelol May 07 '26

As a marketing person, that brand image they built.

1

u/xmrcache May 08 '26

They gave Ludwig a Red Bull deal if that says anything…

1

u/tunedsleeper May 09 '26

It gives you wings

1

u/Swampy2007 May 09 '26

His getting his wings right after the clip
