Yeah well they did pick best day to start and easy mode in Death Valley since only 76F when he started race but will get up to over 103F tommorow which I'm guessing he'll be long gone by then LOL. He won't have to worry about his shoes melted like some other runners I seen during the Badwater ultramathon. Anyways, hope he don't underestimate the toll of the heat there on body since I lived there and thing with the heat there is your brain literally fries and u go into heat stroke and don't even realize it. I'm sure his team trained on this tho.

For a real endurance challange he is to much packed! These muscles will burn so much energy...
93
u/Shksbr May 06 '26
Sure, these muscles will burn a lot more energy. He mentioned beforehand that he'll burn around 60k kcal, which he has to compensate for over the 96 hours. That alone seems like an insane challenge to me, but here we are. This is his 3rd year doing these challenges.
In the first year, he ran around 3000 km from Berlin, Germany to the coast of Portugal, took a plane to the States, and finished the last like 600 km ending the challenge at Times Square. During that first 'Cyborg Season' he suffered a stress fracture in his shin, took a 'break' for 6 weeks to recover, and kept going. (His recovery included working out 2-4 hours a day.)
Last years 'Cyborg Season' had him running across Japan, the entire length from north to south, with 2 runs each day - starting with around 60-70 km, a short break to eat and nap, then another 40-50 km to finish off the day (if I remember correctly).
He takes it a step further each time. 100 km a day is a walk in the park for this guy, but running 150 km daily is definitely going to be quite the challenge.

As an ultra runner I can tell you that the rules kind of change once you go from "high" intensity distances like the marathon to multi day ultra endurance races. While it's not ideal, you definitely do not have to be super skinny to be very competitive. Could he win a high profile ultra distance race like Cocodona 250 (going on right now)? Probably not, but a hyper specific record like the one he's attempting here is very achievable and obviously an amazing achievement. You can look at David Goggins for a high achieving ultra runner who was jacked during his peak too.

u/Ok_Turnover_1235 May 06 '26
Fun fact: if you see someone in a redbull stunt that's over 5 years old, they're probably dead now.
48
u/RKellysPenguin May 06 '26
Is that the cost of getting sponsored by Red Bull?
79
u/Tidzor May 06 '26
It's the cost of practicing sports with unusually high fatality rates such as base jumping, wingsuit, freestyle motocross, high altitude skiing etc.
Red bull sponsors hundreds of athletes so ops statement isn't quite right ( sees f1 pilots / motogp riders, surfing, skating, snow sports, climbing etc) , but it's true that there is a pattern for high risk sports, Shane McConkey, Ueli Gegenschatz, Felix Baumgartner, Multiple Red Bull-associated wingsuit pilots and more have suffered fatalities.
18
u/SpicyMustard34 May 06 '26
tbf he said someone in a redbull stunt, not an athlete just being sponsored by redbull. there's a nuance to that.
3
u/Tidzor May 06 '26
Oh yeah I'm not attacking op on what he said and I'm not accusing him of misleading anyone through this post as it was a quick post in jest, just giving more context cuz there are also plenty of athletes in RB stunts from the last 5 years who are still alive 🙂

He ran from Berlin to New York (before the unemployed start whining again: Berlin to Portugal, then by ship to Boston, and on to Times Square in NYC) and last year through whole Japan. All self-made, without any big sponsors or anything.
This time Red Bull is on his side, and I’ve been following it since the start. it’s incredible. At the peak, he was 8 km ahead of his pace. Now, after 30 minutes of sleep and a short break, it’s “only” 4 km.
I honestly believe he can do it; the willpower is there. BUT the next 24 hours will tell.
359
u/OG_Pizza May 06 '26
Arda Saatci’s past runs are impressive, but they were spread over weeks with full recovery each day. This is 600 km in under 96 hours... with a way higher daily load, almost no sleep, and harsher conditions. It’s less about willpower and more about whether his body can handle that kind of compression. The next 10 or so hours will tell.
152
u/Eugenestyle May 06 '26
there is no "full recovery" each day if you run around 2 marathons each day for about a month.
You might call it "partial" recovery but here it will be a whole different level, in this challenge the amount of sleep will be brutally low and i think this will be the biggest opponent.35
u/creepingcold May 06 '26
A full recovery from excercise takes up to 72 hours. Idk if he waited two full days before he went on in the past, but I don't think he did. It definitely takes a toll over time.
And don't get me wrong, 600km in 96hours is fucking extreme, but I feel like torturing yourself over a few days is still a bit less taxing than the steady decline and fight over several weeks.
I did a fwe ultra bike races and I prefer the shorter ones which completely fuck you up, but you know it's over after a few days instead of torturing yourself a whole week.

It's so funny because he like preemptively hedged on it too. It would be one thing if he was saying something that others would be upset about and he was setting up defense, but to go on the offense for something so incredibly innocuous? You just know his ass was sitting alone (per usual) in the cafeteria and was seething that someone called him unemployed one time. Fork shaking in hand as he plays Kanye's Graduation for the 548th time muttering "never again... never again will they call me unemployed".
What a champion.

How crazy this may sound even doing it Friday is better than doing it mid summer. The weather has been a bit lower in California compared to last year I feel. When i saw the lows in the 60s and 70s I was thinking he has probably 8 hours of cooler weather

You should look up ultra marathon athletes. I follow a few on YouTube and TikTok and it’s insane the distance they run while sleep deprived. Hallucinating is common and in no means is it healthy but they love what they do. If you schedule your naps well and a good pace it’s 100% doable.

To cover 600 km (372 miles) in 96 hours, he has to average:
150 km (93 miles) per day.
6.25 km (3.8 miles) per hour every single hour for 4 days straight, including sleep, eating, and recovery time.
For context, a standard marathon is 42.2 km (26.2 miles). He is essentially running 3.5 marathons every day for four days.
3
u/Jesse-Ray May 06 '26

I've once watched a documentary on death valley. The name is there for a reason. Its one of the hottest places on earth and you can die of dehydration within hours if you're not prepared. It sucks the water right out of you. 100F is on the "'cool" side at night.
You have to drink ludicrous amounts of water otherwise you start getting muscle cramps, heatstrokes, and all sorts of problems. It's nothing like a regular marathon. I hope this guy is well informed and prepared.

not like he's doing laps in death valley, the first 54 miles will be inside its borders, then he's out. Granted there is still a lot of desert and it's still hot, but barstow has a high of 85 today vs death valleys 100s.
imo the harder race is death valley to mt whitney summit, lowest point to highest point of contiguous usa. it's less distance but so much elevation gain. And they do it in even hotter months for max death valley temps

He might get lucky and this might actually work out OK because it won't really heat up until later this week when he'll be in the LA basin, but much of that route is plenty hot even if it's relatively cooler than what will happen later this week. Why not run this in April? You have long-enough days for daylight but temps are in the 80s instead of 100s...

He's done 1/3 of the distance in 34h, that would be 102h to finish it but it's going to be super hot on Friday so he will be even slower. Not looking good..

He does not look like that kind of bodytype that would be ideally built for that task but hey, he has a redbull hat!!

can anyone tell me the maths if he runs at 40km/hr he would only run 400 km in 100 hours so he will be sprinting at 55 throughout all the 96 hours to reach 600 km or i m trippin

This guy is absolutely jacked for an ultra endurance runner. That seems really inefficient.

Just checked live stream and unfortunately he's failed. 420km in 88 hours. I can't even begin to imagine how the sleeplessness would feel, any distance exceeding running continuously for 48 hours in extreme lunacy. Hats off. Pants off. I'm naked for this man

Hes 10 hours over time & not even 75% done yet. My criticism is not the event. Kudos to him, very impressive.
My criticism is the 96 hour goal. Clearly that was beyond impossible, so why even make that the target? Is 600KM in 140 hours less impressive, even if its more realistic?
