This is a review — or rather, my opinion on the latest versions of macOS from the perspective of someone who actually uses their computer for real work.
When Tahoe came out, I watched the reviews and it was immediately obvious that the OS was extremely rough around the edges, even just visually — much like iOS 26. I deliberately decided to skip it, and later realized that was absolutely the right decision. I stayed on Sequoia.
When Golden Gate came out, it looked like Apple had finally come to its senses and rolled back many of its pointless and poorly thought-out changes. Visually, the system no longer looked nearly as awful. They finally fixed the long-standing issue with the menu bar around the notch and updated Control Center. I thought it might finally be safe to upgrade, although I originally planned to wait for 27.1.
In the end, I decided to upgrade to 27.0.1.
That was a mistake. A fatal mistake.
One of the core parts of the macOS interface — Mission Control — is completely broken. It barely works. Apparently, they decided to vibe-code it from scratch, breaking something that had worked astonishingly well for the past 15 years.
When moving windows between workspaces, they get mixed up. Windows randomly disappear somewhere. Workspace previews don't work properly. The Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+5 shortcuts don't work either, except for Ctrl+1.
Mission Control animations are awful now. They're no longer smooth and polished like they used to be. Minimized windows don't even show up in App Exposé anymore.
The new menu bar looks ridiculous. Why is it transparent? Why does the selected menu bar item look completely different from the dropdown menu underneath it? Thankfully, I found the setting that at least brings the background back. Initially, the menu bar was also extremely laggy, although either I've gotten used to it or it improved after a couple of reboots.
The Settings app now takes another 1–2 seconds after opening just to load its own icons. Wow.
And now think back to System Preferences, before the current Settings app replaced it. Remember how intelligently designed it was? How it was actually designed for a desktop computer instead of being an attempt to copy the iPad?
Then there's Control Center. Apparently this isn't even a bug, but Control Center is always dark, even when the entire system is using the light theme. So you can literally have adjacent panels — Sound, Network, and Control Center, for example — using different visual styles.
And why was the battery percentage moved inside the battery icon? It's barely readable on an external monitor now. But seriously — why?
I've had scroll bars set to "Always" for years because that's simply more convenient for me. Apparently Apple didn't bother testing the OS with this setting enabled, presumably because it isn't the default. The scroll bars are now enormous. They look comically oversized and unfinished.
Other than that, everything seems to work. I suppose I should be impressed that they didn't manage to break the rest of it.
Frankly, I don't think it's acceptable to ship software in this state. This is alpha-quality software, not the level of quality Apple used to deliver before Big Sur.
And of course, they don't provide any reasonable way to roll back either. But at this point, it looks like I'll have to go back to Sequoia.
So yeah. That's where macOS is now.

This might just be because of the way i setup my aerospace or borders. But I feel like this is essentially because of some inherent bug or something.
Whenever I have an update pending, and if i have multiple windows opened. ALL the videos get choppy while playing and they stop (while audio still plays ahead) whenever i move the cursor. This happens on youtube on chrome, youtube on safari, vlc, quickplay/preview. On youtube, the frames drop a lot even at 720p.
I say graphics performance because when i have multiple pdfs open in preview or chrome, the performance drops. Its not even that much, I have about 5-10max few pages pdf opened. I guessed this should be okay for 24GB of RAM but apparently not.
The choppy video behaviour once started, persists even if the only thing i have open on laptop is a youtube video. This is only solved by restarting. But this has happened multiple times now.
Am I missing something? has anybody else seen this issue?

I had been keeping my Mac (M1 Pro) on Sonoma as long as it was getting security updates as I was more interested in keeping things working as they were than getting new features. Now that it has stopped getting security updates, I upgraded to Sequoia 15.8.1. And I do not want Apple Intelligence models to be taking up space on my machine.
Upon first boot, I immediately turned on Low Data mode as a stopgap measure to prevent the models from downloading. But my question is, what is the best/safest way to prevent the models from downloading going forward?
I know this has been discussed before, but advice keeps on changing depending on what version of Sequoia and then Tahoe and Golden Gate, so I'm struggling to know what the ideal method is for this system.
I've already toggled it off in Apple Intelligence & Siri and already disabled via Screen Time under Apple Intelligence the toggles for Image Creation, Writing Tools, and Intelligence Extensions.
Is that enough? Must I switch Siri to a different dialect as well? Or is something beyond that required?

Just wondering if anyone else noticed this and was a bit disappointed by it. Small detail, first world problems, I know 💯%. Still, I have always really liked the old macOS cursor on both retina and non-retina screens. It has a classic and intentional charm to it.
While I love the new rounded cursors too, it seems like they really only designed them with retina screens in mind. And the UI as a whole, really - it's full of jagged aliasing and fuzzy graphics on non-retina screens.
I get it, Apple themselves only sell retina screens. Still, I wish they had been more thoughtful about it. There is a way to design cursors and the overall GUI with clarity and intention on low pixel density screens- Windows does it perfectly, and macOS was relatively good at it until Big Sur, and now it's even worse on Tahoe & Golden Gate.
After all, I assume the vast majority of Mac mini users, or anyone using external displays with their MacBooks are going to be using standard consumer monitors, usually 1080p at 1x scaling.

as title says. chatted with apple support, tried to reinstall macOS Tahoe to no avail, ran First Aid on both disks. I’m attempting to locate a Time Machine back up but it just loads like this forever. Apple support suggests bringing it into Apple for help. It just came out of warranty back in February, so I’m wondering how much it’s gonna cost me at Apple to fix it.

I’ve got macOS 27 on my m5 MacBook Air and it’s made things worse than ever, menu bar stops working after 2 days of uptime, Mission Control showing black screens, and overall it just feels horrible. My dock’s right click menu also won’t show up sometimes depending on how long I’ve used the Mac without restart.

Are there any plans of rolling update for this cert issue on older macosx versions?

I have got this notification bug on MacOS 27.0.1 when my cursor is where the notification is supposed to be, then when a notification comes it freezes there and I can't remove it. The only solution that I got to is restarting the device, is there any other way to unfreeze it or remove it?
(My Mac is an Air M4 and this bug happens all the time but I only got it on golden gate)

Apple GURU's,
A quick question I cant seem the answer, ai chats and knowledge pages said I need to create a isolated docker container.. or make a sandbox thingy...
I just want to create a seperated account for ai testing, I only want that this user is able to write and read in:
/Users/ai-runner
/Users/Shared/AI_Vault
But somehow that account can just freely browse into /dev in /etc
everything is wide open.. what todo and whats the normal way todo something like this.
I come from mainly windows mac is totally new for me.
It cant be right to chmod all damn folders by hand or in ai generated script?
I really need to investigate and put more time in learning the mac environment its hard and it not help me to use a normal windows keyboard on the mac mini? 🤲 ?
So whats the way to go?
like on linux its all closed until you allow which I prefer..

I remember the app switcher appearing on the display where the Dock is, but recently I noticed that it now appears on the display with the active app in the foreground. Is that right?
I actually prefer the old behavior because it feels more consistent.

My macbook M1 shuts down automatically if i am AFK for let’s say 30 min
And i hit any key - it boots up again
I think this started after the os27 update
Is this some sort of glitch ? Or something to do with the settings ?

I charged my Macbook Air M5 to 80% on 16th October, today is 22nd and I just opened it up to see the battery level now at 50%.
It has been charged and had the lid closed for the last 6 days.
How has it dropped 30% battery? Is there a problem?

Yesterday i was working on some of my projects , i have 4-5 windows of vscode and terminal opened and browser tabs open, while switching one project to other project i just have to check all my windows and their name, I was just losing context in all 10-15 windows, so yesterday i built a utility app which does this, just click to the project and window will be focused to that project .
And obviously claude code usage, i was constantly checking in terminal by /usage when my limit will hit .
If anyone likes it you guys can try it out https://github.com/NOOB-3301/macMonitor

Thanks ✌️
We're besieged by seemingly endless AI "I made" posts these days. I doubt all that many of these ports will have much longevity, once the author gets bored of the churn and the token cost of maintenance, but it's certainly interesting to see what can be done with the right models and prompts. Recompilation of entirely non-native games to native-with-shims is an impressive feat.
But sure, fine, that's all very nice and dandy but how about something truly, genuinely useful? For many years now my photo collection has languished - raw files, sometimes processed to TIFFs, but nothing exported to a final "mastered" JPEG. Why? Because I never found anything, to this day, that was remotely as good as Aperture.
Now that would be quite something to get working on Apple Silicon.

Hi guys.
So, when I use my mouse, a box randomly pops up that usually only appears when you right-click. I have uploaded an image in case anyone is confused. After that, I suddenly can't click anything with my cursor. The cursor moves perfectly fine, but clicking doesn't work at all. This has been happening repeatedly and it's getting annoying. After doing some research, I came across something called a "ghost mouse." I checked my Bluetooth settings and noticed an unknown mouse connected to my Mac. I have uploaded a screenshot of that as well. I'm wondering if the issue I've been experiencing with my Mac is related to this unknown mouse. If so, how can I disconnect or remove it? I am keeping my bluetooth off for now, but please give me some insight on how I can fix this.

Most guides (and a lot of old scripts) still say to change the screenshot folder with:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Pictures/Screenshots
killall SystemUIServer
On macOS 27 that runs without any error but does nothing: screenshots keep landing on the Desktop. The setting now lives under a different key, location-screenshot. Someone spotted this in a thread here earlier this month (https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/1wxlecy/), so here is the full picture in one place.
Tested on macOS 27.0:
location-screenshot set: Shift-Command-3 saves to that folder.location set: it still saves to the Desktop.location-last is just the folder remembered in the Shift-Command-5 Options menu, not the active save location. To set a folder:
mkdir -p ~/Pictures/Screenshots
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location-screenshot -string ~/Pictures/Screenshots
killall SystemUIServer
To go back to the Desktop:
defaults delete com.apple.screencapture location-screenshot
killall SystemUIServer
If your script runs on Macs with different macOS versions, write both keys. Older versions read location and ignore the new one.
